When my wife and I saw the previews we were really excited about the movie. We took our 5 year old granddaughter to see it and she cover her eye for most of the movie. It was just a dark movie with too much aggression in it. My wife said she hated it, I thought it was ok. Overall I'd have to say I was disappointed.

Normally, you could miss me with a PG film, but this outrageous fantasy tale was well worth the trip.
Actors James Gandolfini (Carol), Lauren Ambrose (KW) and Forest Whitaker (Ira) immediately make you forget that there are people (not the actors above) inside the giant puppets whom Max (Max Records) encounter on his "wild" adventure!
The story is good for young and adult to enjoy together... Great job Spike Jonz!

This movie was so boring I was bored the kids were bored and grandma was bored too. My 3 yr old daughter was wondering why the lady next to us had her eyes closed. People walked out in the middle of the movie. Don't go to this movie even if it's free.There is no action, no plot and no story line. Who fronted the money for this stinker. Save the 2 hrs and sleep at home it's alot more comfortable. I had to give this movie 1 star but it really deserves -5 stars.

This movie was definitely for a specific crowd: the 20 adn 30 somethings who read this book as a child ourselves, and enjoyed experiencing it in movie form. However, it was way too slow, and uneventful for children. The themes were over their heads.
As for adults who didn't read the book growing up, the movie will seem ridiculous, and won't make sense.
SO, if you're an adult who enjoyed the book AS A CHILD, not with your child, or without enjoying the book, you will enjoy the movie :)

I liked the movie but I wouldnt really take my newphews to see it. It was well done from some view points but it isn't really a "kids" movie. The action is slow and the points that it makes are over a 5-7yr olds head.

I LOVE the book! While the book depicts a mischievous 6 year old taking you on a fun journey. The move missed the mark. It was Dark, dismal, depressing and anti climactic. Max is not a likable character. He is portrayed as a 9 year old troubled young boy fighting his own "monsters'. While I expected to be taken for an adventure through a child's imagination, I was taken on a social, emotional and disturbing journey. Max's anger and rage, his harsh and abusive actions to his dog and mother were very upsetting. As an educator of children, I clearly saw angle of the movie and the fact the monsters were text book coping for Max. I am sad they took one of my favorite books to such a dark place.

Took a group of 8-10 year-olds to watch this movie. I think it kinda went over their heads. But everyone said they enjoyed the movie. They had a great time quoting "Women - feed me!" But I think they missed many of the deeper movie moments.
I enjoyed the movie.
This isn't a happy-go-lucky feel good movie. It's a darker, make you think about what going on kind of movie.
Visuals were amazing. Monsters reflect many of the fears, hurt, and sadness the little boy feels himself. You need to be able to understand symbolism to get the movie.
Well done!

I took my nephews to see this movie over the weekend. Usually I enjoy chilren's movies. A lot of the time they are good. But this one, not so much. I actually dozed off in the middle becuase the movie was slow and boring. One of my nephews also fell asleep and the other asked with 30 minutes to go when it was going to be over because he didn't like it. Really not a very good movie. If I could do it again, I would save money and wait for DVD.

This movie was so boring that my 5 year old didn't know what to do! she kept wanting to go to the rest room and to have a drink of water!! she would lay down on the seat, sit up and just kept moving and moving !! when I asked her if she wanted to leave she immediately said "Yes"!!.
My husband fell asleep!!
and I wanted to do the same thing!!

I became interested in seeing this movie after reading reviews for the novel, The Wild Things. I knew from the beginning that this was not the wistful, picture-book rendition of old, but instead a sometimes sad, sometimes humorous look back on childhood from an adult perspective. I read the book to my son and my third grade class, taking time to explain (and sometimes censor) the more controversial parts. I was relieved to see that the movie was never as dark as the book, but I can see how those who have not read the book would be lost. Adults and children alike need to be prepared for an intellectual challenge before viewing the movie. Once you understand what the 'wild things' symbolize, you appreciate the genius of this work.

I went with my boyfriend and his 8 year old son. The storyline is a bit confusing, but the messages in the movie come through. The movie might scare very young children, but it's great for kids 7-11 years old or nostalgic adults. The young boy who plays Max is very talented and believable in his emotional portrayal. I enjoyed this movie and would recommend it to kids and kids at heart!

I took my 6 yr old daughter in the hopes we would see true movie magic . . . not so much. There are some dark themese in the Wild Thing characters. My daughter cried when Carol tried to eat Max out of anger. It wasn't a "hey I'm just playing let's have some fun", it was "I am a real monster, and I am about to rip your guts out and eat your brains" kind of moment. Thankfully, the whole movie wasn't this way. They didn't do enough to develop Max's mother or sister so that you could better relate their emotions and feelings to the Whild Thing characters. Secondly, the level of depression in the Monsters was quite a bit deeper than that of the child. Yes, Max was upset with his mom, but he wasn't suicidal. The trailers were misleading.

Brit-This was the worst movie EVER. I went with two of my BFFL's and my mom. Even she said she could make a better movie than what we saw! I had a headache the whole time and the language was very unproper. It was nothing based on the book and it had no point to it. It is too much for a kid to understand .kt-i think you should read all these reviews before you waste you money on this waste of time movie...Brit- heck with ths one!!!!!!!!! kt-its soooo boring.

I will preface by saying I never read the book.
That said, I think after a few more viewings (I will wait for it on cable, no more $$ spent thankyou) I might be able to make sense of the plot. However I might be wasting my time trying to read a plot into the movie. Wonderfully filmed and good effects and costumes. The story line (as another reviewer said) played like a student film.
Definitely not for children.

This adaptation underscored Sendak's picture book themes and characters. It was fantastic to see them come to life. Max Records was terrific as main character Max. My 5-year-old didn't particularly enjoy it, but he GOT it on a level that made him a little uncomfortable. "There was a part that made me want to cry but I didn't," he said. The movie provoked an interesting ride-home discussion on feelings and misbehaving. It one of those movies that I like more and more as I think about it and discuss it. Plus it made me cry.

Children's imaginations can be scary and monsters aren't always cuddly Disney characters. While I didn't find this movie dark or depressing I didn't go in there thinking it was going to be a Curious George singalong. This was a beautiful movie that did justice to the book as well as to the sheer rawness of youth.

I thought the characters were cute (Henson style) and I get that the director/writer wanted to incorporate lessons to children in the film. However the plot could have had so much more to it. This is the book that i was read as a child and I was expecting something completely different.

Different from the book, however just as good. I have loved this book forever and my kids do too. They were all in tears at the end...which surprised me. I have 3 kids. 12yo, 9yo, and 6 yo. They all loved it.. Thought it was a nice family movie.

Spike Jonse has said that he did not make a children’s movie, he made a movie about childhood. It is a poignant and honest portrayal of a childhood like most, not perfect. Max is a wild thing himself and you find pieces of him in all the others. It reminded me of times when I felt out of control, helpless and unheard. Even today don’t you sometimes want to scream or hit someone? I remember throwing a tantrum as a child because my grandmother made pancakes. I took a 6 and 12 year old with me. The 6 year old did get a little frightened when the Wild Things first make their appearance, but she climbed up on my lap and was happily focused for the entire movie. The 12 year old didn’t seem bored and we discussed the movie the whole way home.
