This is a really interesting movie, but its not a really entertaining movie. The best description I've seen is that this is a movie about childhood, not a movie for children. I took my 1st grader and she liked it - not loved it. I don't think my 4 year old would understand it, and would likely be alternately bored and scared.

It would help anyone who is going through a divorce with kids to get a child's perspective on how they cope with being secluded by it. It has a hidden story behind it that children will not easily understand, but may sympathize with.

I am truly impressed, both as an avid lover of the book, and as a child psychologist. A movie that finally portrays a child as a child. I can't think of a time during the movie when I thought, "A child that age would never do or say that." The monsters were very intense at times and I would not suggest this movie for children younger than 10 years old. However, there are many children 10 and older with similar problems who could benefit from seeing how Max handles the many problems in his life. A great movie for adults as well.

i just went with my mom to watch this movie and we didnt like it. The part that made me want to actually leave the theater was when Carol, or whatever his name is, seemingly mocked my religion. I'm not a very religious person but that deeply offended not just me but my mother. Also, whoever said this is a children's movie is clearly wrong because it's full of violence and depression. That kid needs medicine!

This was the worst movie I've ever seen. I mean, come on guys. It's getting praise for "exploring the physce of a depressed young boy". This was a children's book. This was marketed as a children's movie. I took my five year old to see it. She never cries. She cried the whole way home. I understood the plot and that the he saw himself mimicked in the wild things. I just thought the plot was stupid. Most of it was just very random babbling. I would equate it to being on a very depressing acid trip. The flowerchildren of the 70's wouldn't understand this movie.

Having just come back from seeing Where the Wild Things Are, I'm trying to figure out what some reviewers, both in print and here on the web, mean when they say that the movie has "no plot." I suppose they think of plots as kidnappings, conspiracy stories, and apocalyptic tales of 2012. Wild Things is the story of a boy setting out to discover himself—and doing just that. All the monsters he discovers are either facets of his own personality or memories of people who are important to him in his real life. Not a scene was extraneous to his quest, and not a line of dialogue rang untrue. Wild Things is a truly magical and beautiful film, probably the best movie I've seen this year.

Even though it's been years since reading the book I still remembered how cool the book was and how imaginative the book was! I think the movie did an excellent job in that as well. The 'wild things' are amazing in the film and really enjoyed the voice actors for each of the monsters. I don't think it's too dark for kids it might be a slow paced for the kids but they might be intrigued by the creatures. Overall i would recommend this movie!

On the most basic level, this movie was a major disappointment. This is not a movie for kids. On a deeper level, the movie raised interesting themes touching on such broad issues as the roots of depression, social exclusion, political organization, and the acceptance of change. For this reason, adults might find it thought-provoking. But I wouldn't recommend this film for children. Your child, much like Max, will find him or herself transported to a world inhabited by dysfunctional adults.

Not what we expected but still very good. I wondered how our 4 year old granddaughter reacted after seeing it earlier in the day - if she was looking for a "book" experience she was probably disappointed ( or scared out of her wits!).

This movie is one of the most creative films I have seen. Some may think the content is dark, but I did not see it like that all. It is simply how life is. It's message is simple. Better yourself and the world will be a better place. Or as and other man once said. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
I will say, however, that the characters may scare some younger children. But, it really isn't a children story

You are aware of the basics of the story - however this film submerges you into another level of imagination as a viewer. The photography, costumes, voices, - all were superb. It's what you leave the movie thinking about (even the next day) is what's so magical. This movie is my pick of the year. Hands down.

The movie is very sad and depressing, although realistic. I think the realism is where most people will have a problem with this movie. Max is a troubled boy, left to his own devices too often and has behavioral issues. He ultimately recognizes himself in the personalities of the Wild Things.
The humorous moments are very dark and fleeting. The special effects and CG for the Wild Things was incredible.
DO NOT BRING YOUNG CHILDREN.

Even though this movie was dark, I believe it had a good moral to it. The monsters mirrored Max's own feelings. In the end Max learned that the ones he loves can love someone else and it doesn't mean they stop loving him. The monster, Carol, learned the same lesson.

After 3 months of playing and re-playing the trailer for our 4 year old... waiting for family movie day... anticipating the fun ... HORRIBLE is too nice a word to describe this disaster. Not for kids! Not for adults! Not for fun! My 4 year old wanted to leave... "nobody is happy here... let's just go" Shame on Spike Jonze and his twisted vision and shame on Sendak for letting millions of healthy imaginative kids down. Warner Bros, do the right thing and reimburse patrons for this gross misrepresentation of good family entertainment. Biggest disappointment of the year. To say it SUCKS is being very polite.

I went to see this movie with my husband, my brother and my parents. None of us enjoyed it. Violence, anger and depression are the main themes. I felt bad for the people in the theater who had young children with them. The trailer is VERY deceiving. I would not recommend this movie for children OR adults. We all left the theater feeling disappointed, depressed and sad. Don't waste your time or money.

This movie was one of the best movies I have seen in a long time.
The book is rather dark to begin with, and in this film adaptation, they take it even deeper. -- into the psyche of a young boy dealing with rage, loneliness, adventure, and unbridled imagination. Each character represents a part of Max and how he views the wold with his young mind.
I was thoroughly entertained!

This movie has no redeeming value at all. The little boy acts out violently, terrorizing his dog and biting his mother. Then goes to a land where more violence and confusion ensue. I went solely based on the endearing trailer thinking I was in for some wonderful fantasy movie. Think again. The trailer does not represent the movie. The boy is a psychopath in the making. Short story but long movie. This movie didn't take me to the adventure, I felt kind of left-out. Some parts were funny. Sometimes there were to "childish" parts and "mature" parts. Since the book was one of my all-time favs, and it's only like 8 pages long, I was super curious to see how the movie would come out. So I couldn't stop grinning through the whole first third of the film, I just couldn't believe someone actually created this wonderful world! It was so creative. The movie had a lot to say 'between the lines' which gave it a lot more substance. We can all take something away from this and be better to each other. RAMBLING! hahaha go see it dummy!

This movie illuminates fallacies in the human psyche that would only be done in a therapy session.
The characters including the human kid are all unlikeable and are weak and insecure. There is violence throughout.Who translated the book into this? If the monsters don't speak in the book,why do they speak in the movie? They would have been better off not speaking.
Definitely not a kid movie. I feel duped by the trailer which makes it look something like the Never Ending Story.
I cannot believe Tom Hanks put his name on this movie..
The movie is about a messed up kid who lies and hurts people.

This ends up being a tender story about an angry kid who gets a fantastical retreat with a group of wild creatures who are as scary as they are lovable. Love and tenderness win over in the end and this kid's tale delivers some profound moments of joy and revelation. If at all possible, see it on IMAX because there are some special effects and sound sequences that will justify the extra cash. Good for all ages, but may scare the very young.

Going in, I was worried that it wouldn't live up to my expectations. I remember this story as one of my favorite growing up, so the bar was set very high. And it did not disappoint. I found it pleasing in every way; it's beautifully shot and the blending of CG with suits and puppetry was flawless. I think it's appealing for both children and adults. The score was a perfect compliment to the fantastic visuals. Positively delightful!
