The movie was dark with some disturbing parts. It did not portray the story characters as I remember them. I would not recommend it for a child under 13. I think Max was portrayed as a child with some deep, underlying problems that should not have been presented in the movie.

I took my six year old daughter to this movie and she recognized all the characters from the book and loved it! I was able to get all the adult themes out of it like Max being able to put all the wild things inside of him away and just love his mother. My 17 year old daughter also loved this movie and both of us were crying at the end. This is a very special movie!

This was, without a doubt, the worst movie that I have ever sat through. I was ready to beat this kids butt for how he was acting. I was ready to beat the mom's butt for allowing him to act that way. Enough liberal spare the rod, give them more sugar, bulls--t. Discipline is needed in the worst possible way. Tough discipline. We don't need a movie that allows a child to act like a wild animal and then be rewarded with chocolate cake just for coming home. This movie sucked!!!!!

We took five 8/9 year olds and this probably wasn't their favorite movie. The adult themes flew over their heads and there wasn't quite enough action to keep them from squirming. My 13 and 12 year old enjoyed it and my husband and I would give it 5 stars.

WTWTA is an astonishing movie which highlights the inner-most emotions of all of us. My sons (7 & 9) and i were touched differently by the themes of the agony of growing up and the hurt and healing inherent in this marvelous story of Max's coming of age. This is a profound movie in which i will discover more things the next time i see it.

I agree, this is not a kids movie. Could be really scary and upsetting for younger children - maybe a marketing mistake there. But as someone in my late 30s who was an only child of the 70s, it totally spoke to me as a smart, subtle, moving and occasionally hilarious exploration of childhood loneliness & angst, and also all the crazy rambunctious creative energy of young imaginations, but really viewed through an adult lens. Genius how Jones creates the 'adult' world of the wild things characters through 'kid' logic, and the gradual revelation of what has happened with his father through the world of the wild things is both chilling and brilliant.

This movie had the potential to be a good or even great movie, yet it somehow fell apart and never quite came together. My 3 kids, rated it between "medium" (5 year old) to "average" (10 year old) to the "worst movie I've ever seen" (11 year old)... I fall somewhere in between and just could not follow where the plot and the movie were going. Amazing animation and special effects add some punch to an otherwise forgettable movie.

This movie was aggressive, stressful, violent, depressing, inappropriate, and a total waste of $11 and 2 hours of my time.
The "Wild Things" characters all seemed like they were on drugs (especially "KW" who was obviously stoned/playing a stoner). The main character, Max, was an angry and aggressive child in need of ADHD meds, therapy, and a spanking. Only toward the end of the film did he become remotely cute.
The movie's redeeming qualities: lots of gorgeous ocean scenes and 30 seconds of Mark Ruffalo.

Absolutely loved this movie. Perhaps because it was aimed directly towards my demographic - 30's, avid fan of the book, into fantasy-type movies. Whatever the reason, this movie struck a deep chord. I cried through all the parts that didn't crack me up. Either way I had tears in my eyes throughout. I honestly couldn't fathom why anyone would give it any lower rating than a unequivocal 5 stars and was shocked to find that some people even hated it. I wouldn't recommend it for young kids, but everyone else should at least give it a try.

We enjoyed this movie, having read the book to our children. It's important to set your expectations before seeing it - it's not a whimsical animated retell of the book. It's a fascinating journey of a boy to a place where he confronts some of his confusion as he comes of age. It is unsettling - and as I saw that Tom Hanks was a producer, it reminded me of the feelings I had after watching "Forrest Gump" or "Castaway" - some loose ends that aren't tied up neatly. I wouldn't recommend children under 10, it really isn't appropriate ~ but for older children, it allows for some good dialogue after the movie...something that doesn't take place often enough.

I loved the book, but the movie just was not good. They turned Max into a psycho kid and all of the wild things had serious issues and the movie explored some very dark themes. The special effects were good but that was about it. I agree with the reviewer who said it was not for kids below 10-I'd go as far as to say 12. It just was not the best.

If anyone out there is thinking of taking a child under the age of 10 to this movie, I wouldn't recommend it. I took my 11 year old daughter as she loved the book as a young child. I used to read it to her nightly! We had to go and see it for that very reason and we were glad we did. I don't know what most people are expecting to see as there isn't much to the book. I figured there had to be a deeper message and there was: a message of tolerance, love, caring, compassion, anger and where it comes from and human understanding. The message was about human complexity and our constant search for love and acceptance. Yes, it was sad and depressing in some parts, but overall the lesson is LOVE. Be kind to one another people!!

This was by far, one of the worse movies I have ever seen, or taken my kids to. My husband, and 3 children, ages 11,13, and 15, all went - very excited.
Well, the movie was dark, the camera was constantly jerking about, making us nauseated, the theme was entirely depressing, the kid Max's behavior was hard to follow - like a psycho, and again, it was very depressing. We almost left, but stuck it out. Not sure why. I cannot believe this movie got any positive reviews!

I enjoyed the movie..However Max's behavior was really bad in the beginning..At least in the book it did not go into as much detail as to how bad he was..My 5 yr old grandson even said to me "Boy grandma he is not being nice at all"..All in all it was an ok movie..My grandson liked it but he said he just wants me to read him the story not see it again..So NO buying the video on this one..

We took our 9 yr old niece to this film. She loved it! This updated version from the 1960's book features an imaginative, angry and a bit disillusioned 10 yr old boy who wishes things remain the same... Don't we all? The monsters and the music reflected Max's moods and thoughts Including both fear and anger.in a very creative way. This was our second time seeing the film. My husband and I noted more parents seemed to enjoy the film better than their very young children. The 3-6 yr old crowd screamed during the more intense scenes and those same children appeared to be bored in the quieter moments. This film is not for children OR ADULTS that have to be entertained by special effects and gun battles

This movie was definitely worthy. The characters Max created were perfect mirrors of his problems. Probably a little too cerebral for common bubble gum Transformers "formula" movie goer. But who cares?! The ending was better the the book, and with all the violence people allow their children to see this was NOTHING. No more darker than video games! Music was very cool. But.. probably too serious subject matter for little ones. Good as Little Princess!

As an adult whose parent divorced when I was five, I found this movie very well done. It is not a subject that is directly touched upon, but Mr. Jonze, Goldenberg and Eggers did a fantastic job in working with the "text". Music was wonderful and keep your eye on Max Records. He was fantastic in the role of Max.

simplicity is the key- some people have been complaining in the lack of story- have you ever read the book- its short- so what they did with it was fine- they didnt get all crazy and make something horrible- the story easy to follow- the visuals are beautiful- the cinematography was amazing and the soundtrack pulled it all together- a stunning piece of work- as much as i like action movies i also like low key beautifully made ones too- definitely a breath of fresh air- the thing that really got me the most was the length of the book- they could of done anything with this movie- so im glad they decided to stay true to the warmth of the original story

After seeing the trailers for this movie, I was excited to see what Spike Jonze could do. I loved "Being John Malkovich." Boy, what a disappointment. The movie had no plot and moved sloooow. Everyone has been a child and understands feeling alone. But the book was not about that; it was about overcoming fear. The movie tried to take a contemporary theme and use the book as a backdrop. Bad idea; poor execution. Too dark for kids. Wait for DVD...

I'd been told by a previous viewer this was not a movie for children. SO TRUE. I learned it was also not a movie for adults. I thought the child actor was good, his feelings and perspective at the beginnning of the film convincing, well-conceived, well-portrayed. From the point he runs away to Where the Wild Things Are, I found the message very confusing and the Wild Things very unappealing. While there were moments, I was often bored and glad when it was over. I wouldn't recommend this movie to anyone, especially children.

I liked the movie because, for once, Hollywood acknowledged a child's alienation and anger, and that it didn't condescend to its audience by serving up some superficial, syrupy formulaic happy ending. I liked how the monsters reflected some part of Max -- Carol needing assurance and parental love, for example -- and how his interaction with the monsters matured him, made him appreciate how tough it can be to be a parent. We need more movies like this -- not the soulless, animated, plotless Disneyfied slop that doesn't explore the human condition and seeks less of the truth.

I had no idea what to expect because I never read the book. I felt it was a very dark movie and even really wierd at times. I think they could have made this more kid friendly and should have left out all the angriness. I understand the plot but feel it could still have been reached by making it more fun vs dark and wierd.
