For those of you that were disapointed and thought it was too dark for children... you should have done some research before going to see the movie!
The trailers are dark and capture the movies tone immediately. Anyone could have seen that from the start. It is NOT a movie for little kids, that is why it was PG and not G.
Being a teacher and a huge fan of Maurice Sendack and this book my entire life and career, I was overwhelmed by the creativity and amazing nature of this movie. It WAS VERY TRUE to the book and so creative!
I was taken to a far away land that had only been in my head since i was a little kid and enjoyed every min of it!!!!

This movie was very disturbing. I thought there was too much violence that was not needed. I regretted having taken my kids and kept hoping there would be a redeeming moment where it was explained and the lesson was taught but it didn't come. I enjoyed the special effects and the voices of the wild things.

I was not familiar with the book that this is adapted from, however, this movie deals with very adult emotions and situations. Many people felt that it was boring and draggy. If you are expecting an action filled adventure, then this movie is not for you. This movie will take you on a emotional journey that is rewarding and fulfilling.
I saw this movie in a packed theatre in Times Square, and when the credits rolled there was a standing ovation for this film.

poignant movie about how the loss of a parent affects even the youngest member of a family. i don't think those above age six will get that part but they will relate to the imagination, anger and love that a small boy feels and eventually reconciles.

Great transition from the book. Costumes are amazing! I wouldn't recommend it for children as it is a bit dark and can be scary at times. Love that James Gandolfini is the voice of Carol!

The muppet creatures were very well done and Max Records does a beautiful job as the boy hero. That said, this movie was a just a saga of a disfunctional family of muppets. There were too many negative emotions and psychological undertones to make it interesting for kids. My 7 yr old was wanting to leave after 45 minutes. It may be a good study in divorced family dynamics, but has no child-like fun to it.

I thought the movie was wonderful and true to the book-if you were looking to see the muppet movie you should have read the book first to know that is not what you would see. It is definately for children 6/7 and up and even that level a lot of the meaning went over their heads. It also gives a parent an opportunity to discuss relationships and family. I would definatley reccomend but not for young children.

oh man i loved this. This movie should have you in the palm of its hand emotionally unless you're made of stone. Its not necessarily for kids, get over it. It is a wonderful example of a kids imagination and well, it's just great. the only problem i had with it is that it seemed like it was 3 hours long. I loved every minute if it , it just seemed like it was long.

A complete and utter dissapointment. The movie is riddled with inappropriate violence and themes that lead one to the inescapable conclusion that the Wild Things need family counseling and maybe some anti-psychotic meds. Most films for children convey a message. The message here was, its OK to hurl rocks at your friends when your mad or even remove one of their limbs! I sat my child down upon returning home and counseled him on the inappropriateness of most of what he saw during the movie. I'm not a "tree hugging" liberal that wants to shield children from the real world, but this is NOT a film for children or even mentally healthy adults for that matter.

Although this movie is adapted from a "kids book" the movie is for 'big kids.' It deals with emotions and feelings that many kids and adults today experience. It is a sad movie but at the same time uplifting giving the viewer an understanding of the difficulties and work required of being a part of a family. I think Spike did a wonderful job!

Two adults and 7 children (ages 5-10) attending this viewing... we were ready to leave after the first 1/2 hour. I thought the beginning part of the movie had adult content, the kids just did not understand nor did the movie keep their attention. We were all very disappointed when we left. I will say that Jim Henson's folks did a great job on the creatures. So much for the upside of this film. Not only would I not take a child to see it, I would not take an adult to see it. It was boring, pointlessly annoying, the characters had little or nothing to recommend them, Max needs serious family counseling. Bottom line, this film was sad and depressing. The rock throwing scene was violent and downright mean-spirited. Maybe it was supposed to be a metaphor but kids don't comprehend metaphor, they just go home and throw rocks at each other. Mary Poppins or Nanny McFee this is NOT!

to those who think this film destroys the book, i think mr. sendak would disagree. he loves the film. do you think you know his book better than he does?
to those who think its not for children, i respectfully disagree. maybe it's not for a kid who gets scared when they see the the scary trees in 'snow white' (also a film for children). but for all kids who deal with hurt & anger every day, this is a lovely film of self-discovery. in no way does this film CONDONE violent behavior. it does the opposite. doesnt max leave the wild things? hes growing up! dont you want your child to see a movie where the kid chooses his mom?
wtwta is a lovely piece of artistry. i laughed, cried & pondered what it means to be a good person and a family.

Spike Jonze must have grown up in a dysfunctional family. How else could you possibly create a film from that wonderful children's book that has such anger and sadness? My children 6,9, cried and wanted to leave the theater. I wanted them to stay for some closure and a happy ending, but it really wasn't there. If you liked the book I doubt you'll like the movie. And don't take your children. It will spoil the story for them.

See this movie, and it just may ruin your image of Maurice Sendak's wonderful children's picture book. In the movie, Max throws a fit one night before dinner and begins jumping up and down on the kitchen table. His Mother yells at him to get off the *#@ table, he bites her, and runs away to a land of monsters who can be just as bad. They do things like destroy their huts and punch holes in trees because they "hate them". They build a beautiful fort, but decide that if anyone comes in that they don't want, their brains will automatically be cut out. I just didn't get it. I was bored, confused, disgusted, and apalled. This is harsh, but I'm not sure what any child could gain from this movie other than a few bullying tactics.

Still trying to resolve my initial reactions to seeing the trailers and what I saw in the full length version. Two very different experiences. The violence--I use that term loosely because it's such a charged word--expressed through real human loneliness, sadness and anger was surprising. I can see why some may say it's not a kid's movie. The anger is truly frightening especially coming from creatures who are so lifelike. The special fx was incredible and seamless when it came to the creatures. Really brilliant.
Karen O--you never cease to amaze. Truly magical.

I too had high expectations when going to see this movie and it did not disappoint! It was thoughtful, fit the book exactly, the characters were wonderful, Karen O's soundtrack was amazing, it was funny and heart breaking. And even if the symbolism and hidden meanings went a little over board, the move was beautiful and completely made up for it.

While the store wasn't quite as compelling as I'd hoped it could be-- and I admit I was going in with very, very high expectations-- the movie was definitely very well done. Certainly a film worth seeing, though I feel like they could have done a lot more with the plot and the acting felt a little stiff in parts (meaning the kid felt a little creepy at times).
It's always concerning when something from your childhood is updated like this-- so easy to think that they're going to just rip from it and not pay it proper respects-- but that's not the case with this film. It stayed true to the "feel" of the book, certainly, even though they stretched about ten sentences of a text into a two-hour movie.

Loved this movie! I went in to see it with very high expectations and I was not disappointed. It beautifully captures the imagination of childhood but is geared for adult audiences. I think children under the age of 10 would be scared of the wild things, and confused. To be honest the wild things are a bit bi-polar and scary at times. I think kids could get easily bored since their was not too much dialogue through out the movie. I loved the directors cinematography and how he really conveys the movie as seen through a child's eyes. Beautiful!!
