I wondered how they would make a film from the book so many of us loved as children. Unfortunately, Jonze (a director I usually love) et al did not rise to the challenge. While the young actor who played Max was wonderful, the nonexistent script really weakened what could have been a story that brought you closer to the characters not distanced you from them. The "puppets" and animation was amazing and almost worth the price of admission - almost. Wait for the DVD if you are compelled to see this.

I came into the movie with decent expectations-the reviews were good, and I loved the book. I came out and I was truly blown away. Max Records gave a brilliant performance as the angry boy Max, the creatures, cinematography, and music were all amazing. What I think I loved most about this film was its accesibility to all age groups. There was everyone from four year-olds to teenagers to grandparents in the theatre, all of which were moved by the film in some way, be it the creatures or the complex, and sometimes scary, emotional places to which this film travels. Overall, it was truly amazing. I hope to see it at the Oscars.

Beautiful cinematography, excellent adaptation. I little complex for kids under 7 years old, but still enjoyable. I took my 6 and 8 year old kids and they laughed and cried, but so did I. It really speaks to the power of family closeness and a boys struggle with his emotions and growing up. We loved it!

This is a wonderful movie, one of the best I have ever seen.
It is a wonderful allegory of human need, suffering, loneliness, and triumphs, all created on a level that a child can understand and an adult can learn from.
See it by all means. You don't need a child as "an excuse," but if you have one to bring, it sill serve him or her well.

I took my nine-year-old son to see this movie. Yes, we are both familiar with the story, though it's been a long time. There are a lot of subtle--and not so subtle--messages as well as laughs in this movie. The trailer I saw for it made me think it looked goofy (and didn't want to see it), but I'm glad I did see it. It isn't slick, though it is visually wonderful to watch. Lots of smiles and laughs. I think this movie won't be appreciated by everyone--like those who prefer fast action and lots of dialogue--but I predict it will be well-loved for a long time to come and perhaps achieve "Classic" status.

Maybe this movie is completely dependent on the age of the viewer, where they are in life, and the emotional conflicts they themselves maybe be going through. This movie left me drained emotionally, in a good way. It was brilliantly moving and beautifully shot. Max Records gave a very real, very believable performance. This felt for me, far from a childrens movie, but the children in the theater did seem to enjoy it. I spent a lot of time looking forward to this film, and i was dissappointed because my expectations were fairly high, but after a second viewing, i fell in love with its truth and charm.

notwithstanding the beauty of the cinematography and flawless visual effects, the script was brilliant. the parallels between the wild things and the people max was close to in real life, and all the symbolism which tied to his personal struggles, really made the movie honest and human. it was treat the whole way through.

Save your money, save your time!This was hands down the worst movie I have ever seen & believe me I've seen a lot of bad movies.Just when I thought Land of the Lost & Year One were bad,along came Where the Wild Things Are.It was stupid, long & inappropriate for children.These wild things were scary & kept making references to eating people.Not to mention the rough play, punching & demolishing things.As a grown adult, I was even scared for the little boy during some parts of the film.I don't understand how kids wouldn't be scared watching this.This movie should not be rated PG.I never read the book but I'm still trying to figure out what the moral of the story was.Do yourself a favor & go see something else!

i thought that the movie was brilliant. So well done, colors, costumes, filming, script, acting, it was amazing. I hadn't read the book in about 20 years, and didn't remember to much from it, so i was little surprised at the ending. I thought there were some hysterical moments, and would totally go see it again!

The photography was beautiful and filming location stunning. The costumes were great. The acting was good and the story line worked. With all that said, it lacked the ability to move me to either laugh or cry... which I typically do very easily. I feel the sign of a great movie or book is if it touches some emotion. I just sat there and had a visual feast but not an emotional one. The book has us using our imagination and laughing. The movie lacked depth and for a 90 minute movie, based on such a beloved book - that's just disappointing. BTW: We went with 15 people of all ages: The parents of those under 6 thought those kids were too young. The six 14 year old boys seemed to like it. The five parents we're left feeling neutral.

While I do not think I ever read the book, the theme is right on. I question how much young children will understand the main idea of no one but yourself is responsible for your happiness. Explanation of the theme would go along way. That combination is the real reason I rate it so high.

If you are wanting to have the book on screen, this is not the book. It, is however, profound and beautiful. My child is not a child any longer but I would likely not take him to it if he were a little one. At the showing I attended, teens enjoyed it greatly. I think there are elements that are too scary and above what little ones who love the book would understand. So, go yourself, take your teens, where pajamas and a crown, but leave you little ones with a babysitter and read them the book when you get home.

I loved it. The moral to the story was no one else can truly make us happy. Our actions and feelings are all our own . , I went with my 7 and 8 year old children. It made us laugh, it made us cry. It had some scenes that were so sureal they were beautiful and freaky at the same time. I would not take young children to see this movie, it is nothing like Barney. But I would definatly make it a point to see it on the big screen. Two thumbs up!!

Loved, loved, loved this movie! Great adaptation of a classic. I am so pleased that this was not an animated film. Spike Jonze did a great job of relating this movie to todays issues. Although I viewed this movie with my 3yr. old, I feel that this movie is better suited for 12yrs. and older, just because of the subject matter. I think this beautiful story may be lost on the little ones - that it was clearly marketed to, but great job!

A weird, beautiful, perfect movie. How could anyone say it's not for kids? I would say it's not for adults who can't remember being kids!
Don't expect your typical "epic journey" film/ It's a great, visual and character driven story about childhood and imagination. And the plot does not make any sense! Because it's from a child's perspective, filled with a child's sense of drama. The Wild Things themselves are so perfectly executed! See it in the theater; it won't be as good on a small screen.

This movie was a big event for my family! My two oldest are in college, the oldest texted me that he downloaded the book to "review" before seeing the movie and had fond memories doing so. The sophomore in college went to the midnight premier and loved it. The two youngest and my husband and me went last night and we agreed, what a great movie, even if a bit dark at times. The story was well done, the Wild Things had very distinctive personalities, and the animation of the Wild Things was exquisite. Since we have such a fondness for the book, we expected to be let down by the movie, and we were pleasantly surprised! I recommend this movie to all families with older children.

This film was a major disappointment. I went with 6 other adults, some who'd read the book, though most hadn't. While we all expressed wonder at the puppets, we also expressed boredom at the movie itself. I was never engaged emotionally at any point in this film and found myself, towards the end, struggling to stay awake! When the movie ended, there was near silence in the theatre, only a small smattering of applause..

I loved this movie. However, I wouldn't suggest it for parent's with children. It is NOT the children's book you remeber with a boy in a fun imaginary world. It is a little dark and has some serious tones to it, but it is so well done and really show's the good in all bad situations. The world they play in is amazingly done and the "Wild Thigs" are so life like.

"Where the Wild Things Are" is a favorite with my chidlren. I thought the movie was well-made & the effects were fantastic. The storyline stays true, for the most part, to the book & Max is the perfect "Wild Thing." Having said that, this is not a movie for small children. There are some very real emotions that the monsters convey and an older child may not be as frightened about these outbursts. Each monster seems to characterize a different part of Max & his emotions & I think it was well-done.

A beautifully filmed movie. I was very excited in the begining of the film, thinking I was being transported back to childhood imaginary visions. Then it all went bad. Max, a very talented little actor may have a bright future, but the movie should be filed away with Ishtar.
The dialog was poor, confusing for kids, too violent and painful. It might have been a good movie to show in a Psych 101 Class, but not a theater full of kids looking for entertainment and fun.
Let's just call it "Lord of the Flies meets the Muppets".

The film stays true to the direction of the book. Of course it is dark and scary at times, and even mean spirited. But both of these are present in the source material.
I went with my 6 year old, and he loved it. Do I realistically think he understood the metaphors or more adult parts? Not at all, but there was enough to hold his interest. In fact he's been drawing Wild Things all morning!
In the end it was a visually stunning movie that didn't look to overcomplicate what made the book such a classic to begin with.

This is a movie worth seeing but it is not a movie for children. The director makes a sweet book we all read as kids into a fairly depressing work. Every scene that has a bit of sweetness to it usually is dashed with a scene that is sad. Costume design fantastic. Voice over perfect. Unfortunately too depressing at times.

My sons 6&10, and I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. At the very beginning it was a little intense, but that is okay... it set the tone and eased up at the appropriate time. So many funny lines, adorable charactors, and excellent story telling. It still is funny to me that I could feel such an unrealistic story could feel so realistic. I enjoyed the way they showed love. I can't wait to watch it again on DVD.

I went to go see this movie with a couple of friends, and I have to say, we all liked the movie. If your looking for a happy go lucky, make you feel good when you leave the theater kind of movie, this isnt it. But, neither is it a downer. Its the kind of movie that you feel satisfied after watching it. That is, as long as you can understand what is going on and understand everything in the movie. But, over all, It is a movie you can enjoy and laugh about. I would recommend to a friend. Also, the creatures were done VERY well!
