I took a 4 year old and a 5 year old to this movie. Both girls were excited about going because they had read the book. We weren't even 30 minutes into the movie and both girls wanted to leave! It is nothing like the book and was really slow---the beginning took forever and when Max finally got to the land of the wild things, it was confusing. We left. Save your money. Better yet, use the money you would have spent on the movie and go buy the book!

I've never written a review in my life, but felt as a mom I should warn other parents=this movie is not for young children! It's a situational movie that has a plot too complicated and dark for any child under the age of 13. The previews appeared in keeping with the children's book, but they choose the "best" parts. The theater was packed with families with young kids so we weren't the only ones with children ages 5 and 8 or younger. Kids around us were asking to leave and those of us who stayed left disappointed and feeling dooped by the previews.

I took my 3 kids,;15 and 12 year old boys and a 10 year old girl. We all absolutely enjoyed it!. Spike Jonzes did a fabulous job with the characters, visual details and overall appeal.

This won't please everyone but the ones who get it will really love it. The boy who played Max was just amazing - wild, vulnerable, sad, triumphant - he brought his A game for sure.

I was impressed with how well the intro scenes were true to the book in capturing the childlike relationship blur between fantasy and reality. But the moment the monsters opened their mouths the magic was broken for me. That wasn't in the book.
I agree with earlier comment. I really don't think that the Mr Sendak planned the Monsters to be such depressed and complex characters. That was a real let down.

The movie was more for an adult than a child. The kids liked certain parts that applied to them (war, fighting, snowball fight, imaginative play) but mich of the emotional stuff went over their heads.

If you go in expecting this movie to be exactly like the book, you will be disappointed. If, however, you are looking for an extremely beautiful, interesting take on the original, this is for you.
The book is 48 pages long and is mostly pictures. There is simply no way to turn that into a feature film and not elaborate upon it. I love the book as much as the next person, but you have to go into this movie understanding that it's not going to be exactly like the book. It can't be.
This movie is, quite simply, spectacular. The characters are well-developed and relatable, and there is truly not a dull moment. While the plot is, at times, slow, the set and effects are always mind blowing.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Dreams are full of the range of emotions and the symbolism covering that range can look like anything. Fears ARE dark and the images that go with them ARE a little twisted sometimes-- even to -- or especially to -- a 9 year old boy. The movie is magical -- the story gently expanded. If viewers go in with an open mind -- they might come out with some interesting and challenging thoughts to consider. Just go with it.

I went into this film openminded and a bit excited. I took my newly turned 13yr old daughter. We'd both read the book, at different times in our childhood, and were really curious about how it was going to be brought to the screen (her curiosity was a bit more basic) I wasn't completely disappointed in the story. And I wasn't let down by the darker nature of the film, afterall, there is a darkness to the book, its about monsters, for crying out loud. But what I wasn't over pleased with was how it seemed unresolved. And the ending seemed forced.
But overall, it wasn't a waste, and I enjoyed how the director kept the whimsy, even while using a darker set of crayons to paint this picture.

Beautiful rendering of Sendak's book. The characters are complex, the filmmaking really exquisite. However, it is NOT really a film for kids- there's little humor, and what exists is sophisticated. The characters are very complex (insecure) and there's no Disnified simplification. No problems are solved and there's no "happy ending" (at least for the Wild Things...). All of this made Max, his family, and the Wild Things completely believable. In particular, the casting of Max was extremely good. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was that the book IS a children's book, after all....

I really wish movies would start using the PG-13 rating when needed. This movie is not for young children. I definitely learned a lesson though. I will have to do a little research before taking my kids to the movies. The previews and the rating made me think it was going to be OK for kids (mine are 5 and 8). We left 1/2 way through.

About every review has said how sad and dark the movie, was, ummm remember the book/ it was no Dr. Suess. There were lessons to be learned by young and old, I think it was a great balance of kid entertainment and a lot for adults to think about!! loved it!

I was really surprised by how dark this movie was. Since this was a book that I read as a child and read to my kids - I assumed that it would be meant for children so I took my 4 and 6 yr old - boy was I wrong. The movie was very complex and dark and was not fun at all. I am still confused on who this was mean for. My kids did not enjoy the movie.

If you grew up loving the book and you remember it, this movie hits the mark and exceeds it VISUALLY. An absolutely stunning representation of the characters and Max's imagination. The movie however is not exactly a childrens movie with regards to the plot, and really, even the book was not exactly happy. Each of the monsters reflect a small portion of his personality, and how he learns to deal with it. Unfortunately the dialogue was a bit weak and the movie could have used a bit more happiness thrown in, but it doesn't seem like that was spike jones intent.

This is DEFINITELY NOT a kid's movies.
It's an amazing psychological profile into Max. All the monsters are some aspect of Max: Judith- his low self esteem, Carol- his uncontrolled rage.
As a teacher and a mother, it's a great insight into children and their complexity. It offers an explanation for misbehavior at it's root; internal chaos and hurt.
But aside from all the psychoanalysis. The movie is simply a great flick for adults. It's very dark and the characters are well developed. As I said in the title, it's the adult's version of the book. It's everything you read into the book and everything with which you've identified in yourself when you read it.

The movie was darker than I expected. The monsters looked exactly like the book's illustrations but the dialogue was odd (not child's dream odd, but just TOO odd) and the movie was sad and dark. I was very disappointed, but it was cool to see the wild things come to life on screen.

One of my all times favorite book as a child and now to read to my own young children as a mother thankfully never quiet delved to deeply into monster psych. From what I've learned from the movie is that it is a dark and tortured place. I have a hard time believing that Sendak wanted his monsters to be such sad and complicated creatures. Although the movie itself was beautiful and the pictures on the big screen truly did bring the book's illustrations to life, the plot dragged and the characters were unlikable. My six and four year old were bored and I left the theater depressed. There is no way that the tone of the movie matches that of the book even if visually it's right on the mark..

I really, REALLY wanted to love this movie & well, didn't. We kept waiting for the amazing feeling we expected to get after watching the previews & reading the reviews. If you have an interest in human psychology, as I do, you'll probably enjoy this movie. Each of the "wild things" is a representation of a different element of the human psyche. Admittedly, they're drawn very large and made obvious, but that's why this is a wonderful children's movie, in my opinion. For youngsters (although I'd say at least 7 years or older) and adult children alike.

I went to see this movie with my friend (both 14 years old) and we thought it was pretty good. It was kind of depressing at parts, but there were also hilarious parts (and very random). I would recommend this movie to a lot of people but i think it would be too sad for kids under 9.

Total disappointment. We took our kids (8 and 11) and actually left before the end of the film to get our money back. Very depressing movie and very slow moving and meandering. I kept waiting for the good parts, but did not have enough patience for the movie to redeem itself. I was so looking forward to this one too! Maybe teenagers will like this more than younger chidren, but I wouldn't recommend this film. It is not at all light-hearted and hardly a family-friendly film.

I really enjoyed this movie. I read this book to my son every day. We were super excited when we heard it was coming to the big screen. The movie was a little dark, but fortunately, my son is 7 and can handle that. I will not be taking any of my younger nieces and nephews to it for that reason. It stayed true to the book for the majority of the movie.

I really liked the fact that this movie stayed true to the book; just like the book you have to have an imagination----watching the movie made me feel the same. I love the beauty of the characters, especially Max! He definitely played the part of the wildly boy that the book describes. I probably won't say enough about the soundtrack----COMPLETELY AWESOME!! It fit the tone of the movie perfectly! I am definitely ordering the soundtrack!
