This was as great as the book I LOVED when I was little although not exactly the same. This is not for little children as they will not get it. I heard many toddlers repeatedly asking their parents what was going on because they didn't undertstand the drama. It was entertaining and moving for adults.

The overall tone of this movie was sad which surprised me; I was expecting a fun movie. I would still recommend it as the scenery and Max were super but all the Wild Things were sad and depressing. However, my youngest son, aged 5, enjoyed it.

While my son, and I, were amazed by the costumes and special effects, this is definitely not a movie for children. Mainly, the "Wild Things" act out the way Max does in real life. No child under the age of 13 is going to get the "message". And, for adults, it's just plain depressing and annoying. I don't need this "message"... I already have 3 kids and am well aware of how they act out. I give the visuals a 5 star rating... the "message", only a 1 star.

This movie was amazing. It did get a little scary so might not be for little kids, but it was terrific. The characters stayed true to the book, but also had something new about them. The ending was strong. There were 10 of us, all freshman in high school, both boys and girls and every one of us would recommend it.

I went to see this movie with a friend who grew up loving the book. As I had never read the book, I didn't know what to expect other than what I had seen on commercials. I was impressed with the personality of the "monsters" and their interactions with Max. I enjoyed it much more than I thought I would.

As someone who grew up loving the book Where The Wild Things Are, I knew going in to this movie that I was either going to love it or hate it. I absolutely loved it. It was more loosely based off the book I grew up loving so much than it was a word for word visual telling and Spike Jonze made it work beautifully. It was the most heartbreaking thing I've ever seen and absolutely beautiful both visually and emotionally. It is not for children, it is for the child that still lives inside of all of us jaded adults. This film moved me. It touches on issues that so many of us have pushed deep down within ourselves since childhood and brings them back out with such truth and innocence that even the coldest of hearts will be misty eyed by the end.

I enjoyed this movie and the comparisons/lessons projected by the WildThings for Max to learn about his own behavior, but I agree with a previous reviewer, young children will not get this from the movie. I also thought that while at times disturbing, the portrayal of how hard it is to be in a family sometimes and deal with what families deal with was an interesting take on the book's simple plot; stunning cinematography, but definitely for an older audience........

"Where the Wild Things Are" helped me to understand why the book has such universal appeal. The film exquisitely portrays the feelings and frustrations of a young boy whose whole life has been disrupted by the adults and older family members around him. It accurately catches the bittersweet innocence of childhood, and the pure id impulses that conflict unleashes in us. I LOVED this movie, would see it again and again - just the way I still feel about the book - for me, as an adult!!!

Jonze takes liberties to change up some of the story but, that is what a good director does. Jonze takes a beloved childhood tale about the raw emotions that children have and turns it into a visionary story where the wild things are magical, beautiful beasts. This was truly an amazing movie.

While it was a visually stunning film, the story was not appropriate for children. Setting a 7 year old troubled boy to solve the problems of a bunch of overly neurotic monsters is not a plot appropriate for children.

In the book, Max gets crazy, does bad things, gets sent to his room. He goes where the wild things are, live their wild life as their king, and then decides it is enough, goes back home to his mother, who offers him soup.
Why on earth did they need to make the mother a single mom who has a boy-friend? Why on earth did they need to make the boy-friend kiss the mother and then Max gets mad and crazy. This is such a twist in the story it changes the whole meaning of it.
The rest of the movie is very slow, I almost fell asleep.

What a downer!! If you are a therapist and can convince yourself anything was accomplished or improved for these characters, by all means, take your chances. This movie was not charming, not uplifting, not beautiful, not cute, not funny AT ALL, completely depressing and just plain stupid depsite the good actors involved. And just a couple of meek glances betweem mom & son at the end and a little random snow is supposed to make us feel like our 90 minutes of pain was worth it?? The violent playtime was a horrible example for the kids this was marketed to - but no one under 20 could sit through the excruciating dullness of most of this movie, so I guess it doesn't matter.

Not sure what I expected of this movie, other than I love the book. It was interesting to see how the writers portrayed the various relationships & characters. It was obviously a way for the boy to look at his own behavior and learn important lessons, in how he relates to the wild things and the world.
Do not think most children will understand this movie - the situations that Max is in are pretty intense and the movie did drag at times. Older children will enjoy it but little children may be scared of the creatures that are often times very violent.
The scenery is beautiful and brutal.

Loved the movie from the visual to the storyline. Not a "kid's movie", but a movie about a kid's life. The emotional rollercoaster ride is in full throttle during this film. This movie is most suitable for children ages 7 and up. However, mom and dad will probably enjoy it most.

This was a very artistic movie. I can't say I was very impressed as it pretty much lacked a plot. However it was entertaining because of my sense of humor. I found it pretty funny at times but only because I didn't take it seriously.
I would only recommend this to the "artistic" "indie" crowd, cause they'd love it. With its surreality and strange music (most of the songs have screams and yells in them?), the potheads and trippers would eat this stuff up.

Because this is called a "children's movie", I am giving it 1 star. Yes, it's well made, beautifully filmed, etc, but it is obscenely dark and should not me aimed at the same children who are reading the book! Perhaps pre-teens and teenagers might find the depressing point of view interesting, but thankfully my 8 & 5 year olds were oblivious to most of the "adult" messages. But one good thing came out of going, I was able to say again to my kids, "read the book, it's usually much better!"

Overall the characters were depicted well in the movie and looked just like they did in the book. I found myself lost in a few parts wondering "what was the point of that? I also felt that there were a few parts that seemed a little to emotionally complex for little children who probably read the book. And even some parts that may be a little scary for them but I think it depends on the child. A few times the camera was jumping around in a few sceens that seemed distracting to what was really going on in the movie. I just kept wanting the movie to give more of a fantasy feel but was disappointed since the creatures seemed a little too human like with their emotions. But from a child's perspective they may look it differently.....

Loved the book. I thought that the movie did not accurately portray the book. I didn't like how Max had to convince the wild things to make him king. It seems as though in the book he gained the title through being "the wildest one of all". Also, when Max left the tone was so somber. I thought that Carol should have been comforted by his sister because that relationship symbolized Max's relationship with his sister. It just seemed as though he left on a negative note.

My father used to read and act out this book to me when I was younger, therefore I have a clear bias to LOVE this story and see very little wrong with the movie. That disclaimed, I was captivated and inspired by this movie. I cried multiple times at the level of emotion the wild things conveyed through minimal dialogue. There is so much unspoken communication in this film that I will forever watch it in awe of the effort put into staying true to Maurice Sendak's vision. Definitely don't take kids under 10 to this movie unless they can handle being a bit scared (which Sendak was quoted to say something to the effect of let them wet their pants). There is nothing overtly violent or scary about this movie, though.

It's obviously not for the same age group as the book (it gets a little intense at times), but older kids and adults might still like it. Max Records gives an impressive performance for someone his age, the cinematography is amazing, the voice acting was great, and Spike Jonze is still a great director. Karen Oh's music blended nicely, but didn't really stick out except at the very beginning and end (I really liked the song at the end). The plot got a little cheesy at times, but there was still a lot of subtle nuances in the writing that I liked.

Boy did I get sucked in! I had heard all these great previews about "Where the Wild Things Are" and although I knew the source material was pretty scanty, I just knew director Spike would make yet another great movie out of it. WRONG WRONG WRONG WRONG WRONG!!! Who ever thought this mush would fly? It is abysmally slow, nonsensical, disjointed, poorly written, and the Wild Thing characters are COMPLETELY CREEPY!!!! Carol, the principal wild thing, clearly has bipolar disorder, and is dangerous. Tell your boss, mother-in-law, or high school principal to go just to get them back for all the evil they have done to you, but in the name of all decency, stay away from this movie!!!! What a bunch of rubbish!!!

This movie was gorgeous - beautifully-made and the music is phenomenal.
I think that I didn't expect such loneliness - maybe it's because you never heard the monsters speak in the book - but I didn't think that they stayed on the island, lonely and sad forever.
From the line "do you have something to fix loneliness?", I knew this was going to be a tough one for me. At the end of the day, I think it was VERY well-done, but it was far too close to home for someone who has struggled with deep feelings of alienation and depression as a child (and an adult).
I would never take a child to this movie.

Not a kid-friendly movie. Not even adult friendly in my opinion. I walked in with high hopes and was utterly disappointed. The movie drug on with excruciatingly slow pacing. There were many cases when humor would have been appropriate, yet awkwardness and sadness was chosen instead. My girlfriend liked it, for the introspective look at troubled kids. We both agreed, though, that it was not a movie for kids. Which we found out the hard way trying to keep our 5 year old in his seat for the duration of this yawnfest.
