Like most film in the "mid-night movie" genre it has the b-movie level production values. To most films this would be a detriment but in the case of cult films, it's almost a requirement! And with the right director and the right vision it can totally work as is the case with many films by the likes of Corman and Waters. Jodorowsky certainly has the vision as demonstrated by the stark imagry of many of these scenes and the "dense" philosophical framing of many of the characters. His attempt at making a Felinni-esque western however is were it falls short. Were Fellinni could elevate grotesque to a high satirical form, Jodorowsky doesn't quite achieve that, hence it's cult film status of high-minded and yet silly is in full effect. So the three star rating is qualified as a cult genre rating. Pretty good for a cult film, better than Liquid Sky, but not in the same class as say Rocky Horror or Eraserhead.
