Critical reviews were guarded, so we went with expectation that the storyline and dialogue might not be great, but hoped for excellent special effects and 3d technology. The storyline turned out to be quite entertaining and the characters both live and animated were richer than expected. The visuals were outstanding and the black and white intro alone made me rate them A plus. It is true that James Franco did not project the charisma that would have made this an A plus movie, but the acting of the witches and all the crowd scenes in Oz were endearing and in tune with the spirit of the original movie. Gave this an A-, and actually enjoyed it more than Avatar or Alice in Wonderland at IMAX 3D.

This movie a great prequel for the original Oz, with so many of the original qualities of the original, including the Black and White styling.
The acting is average, and the plot is somewhat predictable, but overall, the movie is a lot of fun, and would be great for kids.
I would strongly suggest seeing this movie in 3D IMAX, where the effects are most profound.

When I first saw the trailer for this movie, I got excited. Normally if I get excited by a trailer there is a tad of disappointment when I get to see this movie. NOT THIS TIME! I loved it. The effects were great. Not over the top and yet great. I haven't read the book and if I had that might change my mind, but this time I don't think it would have changed it much. The colors and the visuals were fantastic. Not to many movies made me happy I spent the money when I leave, but this one was well worth the money and the line we stood in. I recommend you see it and you see it at the theater. The only thing I will do differant if I see it again is not to see it in 3D. I found 3D to be a bit distracting. 3 1/2 stars, but for sure a thumbs up.

As always my experience at the IMAX Warren in Moore, OK was awesome.
The movie was very good. It was done perfectly and was everything a fantasy movie should be. Usually I find one or two things I would have done differently but this movie was just the way it should have been. 3D graphics were perfect.
There were a few slow spots but nothing to keeping me from enjoying the movie.

Enjoyed this movie in IMAX environment, with my wife and preteen, and we had a great time.
The 3-D of the film is good, but not coming at you constantly with one effect after another.
The action sequences are great, as are some of the flights through the land of Oz as you really get to see the scenery and get immersed into it.
The flying baboons are going to scare the little ones, and even made my wife jump a few times as did one scene with the Wicked Witch.
All in all I was pleased with this prequel to The Wizard of Oz. I think it does the original film justice.
You cannot really compare the two, but you can see the great care that the new film director and producers took to tie in all the characters from the first film into the original.
I think you will enjoy yourself.

A little slow in many parts and hard to hold some kids attention through out the movie. Just ok, did not live up to all the hype. We all enjoyed the Artwork and costumes. Very colorful. Still a good movie for kids.

I loved this movie.......so refreshing to find a movie not filled with sex and bad language.........I am not a prude but so tired of the same old 'sex sells' attiude! May be a little too much for the under 5 or 6 year old viewers. I would reccommend this to anyone looking for a fun and whimsical movie to see with a date or your older kids.

This movies effects were brilliant. I did enjoy the movie as the entertainment it was, however, I think I was expecting more. I can not say exactly what "more" but I did feel a little let down. Of course the story was pretty predictable and the ending was a bit unbelievable since Oz didn't really 'DO" anything that would have warranted running off two wicked witches. But overall, it was decent entertainment. I saw it in IMAX 3D... totally not a necessary expense but it looked great. Which I am sure it would have looked great either way.
