Peter Jackson has landed another lunker with the Hobbit movie. Packed with great actions scenes flawless special effects and good acting, the movie is a more than fitting prequel to the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Unlike the Trilogy, where Jackson followed the story line of the books and was forced to remove book elements to keep within time constraints, the Hobbit not only incorporates virtually all of the important book elements, but adds other story lines not found in the book, some of which enhance the movie's story, and some that drag a bit, and add needless complications (everyone in our family, for instance, agreed that the segment introducing and incorporating the Brown Wizard was a little clumsy, including the Necromancer part of the line).
All in all, the movie was signature Jackson, from the minute detail of the armor worn by the dwarfs to the nail-biting brawl between immense stone giants during the company's mountain crossing. Add in the realism created by expertly done 3D and the high framing rate at theater we saw the movie in, and you can totally immerse yourself in the Middle Earth experience, if you don't mind a few orc beheadings along the way.
As always, I was left saddened at the final credits by the realization that I would probably have to wait yet another year to again immerse myself in the saga. Looks like the holidays will bring me back to my Director's Cut collection of Lord of the Rings!
Pros well paced, great story, great actors
Cons too complex

A little slow to start, but I loved the move as a fan of the books and LOTR. I was disapointed with the high speed film rendering. Everything looked fake and it distracted me from the story. Had a read the critics reviews on this new technology prior to seeing it I would have seen in in standard HD 3D. Overall, I recommend the movie and can't wait for the next two (in standard HD 3D format :)

At first the way it's filmed it seems really odd and took a little bit of time to get used to but once adjusted it was breathtaking. The soundtrack is amazing and so are the camera angles and execution. I will definitely be seeing it again!

Overall I loved the movie. I never read the book. I saw the Lord of the Ring movies about 30 times.
The actors and the story line in the beginning of the movie were very funny and engaging and it helped to compensate for the slow start.
The fact that they showed some of characters from The Lord of the Ring trilogy brought back great memories and I sincerely had a smile on my face through out the movie.
The HFR 3D technology is simply superb and so real, it was impossible to notice any issues or flaws with the CGI (Computer Generated Imagery) characters, they looked so real, it was truly well done. Can't wait for the 2 others Hobbit movies in the series...

I am not necessarily fond of 3D movies. All to often the are used as a smoke screen for very bad writing. And although I am extremely familiar with the works of JRR Tolkien, the screen writing was refreshing. if you have parted the pages of the book, you will find the telling of the tale a bit redundant but the effects and character interplay more than makes up for it. I had read some criticism of the film speed and special effects that made me very intrigued. My oldest son is a professional film editor and he had mentioned some of the flaws regarding those. However I was pleasantly surprised as the use of the 3D effects gave more depth to the usual fine cinematography, without appearing hokey.
So, overall, I would recommend this movie to anyone, even if you we're not a fan of Peter Jackson's original trilogy, there is a great story here.

The storyline they included was excellent.. The actors were also great.. If I had any complaint it was the High Frame Rate 3 D.. Im not a fan of 3D anyway cause i think its just a way for the industry to milk an extra 3 bucks from the already outrageous movie prices.. But I figured I would try out and see how this new "High Frame Rate" 3D was.. I was disappointed.. It wasn't awful but it was just really weird.. everything looked almost 2 real like you could tell they were real life people in costumes.. I am going to see it again in 2D just so I can compare it.. Maybe that was Peter Jacksons plan all along to get me to pay to see the movie twice.. Hes lucky his product is just too good for me to resist.. hes like a dam drug dealer.. lol
Pros well paced, great story, great actors

“The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” is mostly what you’d expect it to be. If you’ve seen Peter Jackson’s “LOTR Trilogy” and have been keeping an eye on the TV spots and movie trailers, it’s just like that. Not much more. And not that that’s bad, the film is fantastic entertainment. However, it feels so much like a rehash of some of “LOTR”‘s most famous scenes that one could begin to think that the filmmakers, as they tried to stretch out a single book into three films, were running low on originality. Perhaps that’s why they decided to go with the High Frame Rate format, a gimmick even cheaper than 3D that displays the film at twice the frame rate of standard projection, resulting in a hyper-realistic, sped up look that feels like a daytime soap opera. It is anything but cinematic (see it in IMAX, instead!). However, HFR and 3D do indeed compliment each other, and there are certainly grand possibilities here for the advancement of cinema. Just don’t experiment with it on such important works as Tolkien’s “The Hobbit”. Save that for “Avatar 2″. But I digress. The film itself covers the first third of the book, and introduces us to a much younger Bilbo as he reluctantly joins Gandalf the Wizard and a company of Dwarves determined to reclaim their homeland from a wicked dragon. We won’t see that fight until the second movie, though, so this film fills its nearly three-hour running time with trolls, giant spiders, goblins, and orcs. While some parts stretch a bit, there is plenty of adventure, sweeping vistas, and fighting to please every fan boy (the film has already shot to #88 on IMDb.com’s Top 250, a sure sign of bloated fan boy love). The best scene by far, however, takes place deep in a cave, between Bilbo Baggins and a familiar face, Gollum. Their game of riddles to determine Bilbo’s fate is perfectly written and is so full of wit, charm, and suspense that it threatens to spill out of the screen. Andy Serkis’s masterful motion-capture performance outdoes anything he has ever done before. The man is sheer brilliance, and the day that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences recognizes that will be a great day indeed. He earns a spot as one of five Best Supporting Performances of 2012, in my book at least.

I've read the Tolkien books for many years. Completely enjoyed the Lord of the Rings trilogy, so was looking forward to what Peter Jackson was going to do with The Hobbit. He's taken a fairly short book and is turning it into 3 movies. So he has expanded beyond the original. He's taken stuff from Silmarillion and brought in some other things, but in general he is true to the story and the original author's concept. Definately worthwhile seeing. Looking forward to part 2.

I've seen this movie twice already... once in 2D at the midnight showing and again last night in the HFR 3D. Both were amazing!! I loved the consistency of the look and feel of the film compared to the LOTR trilogy. So often when you have series the directors want to one up what they did in the last film which can be a bit annoying sometimes... but I digress.
Peter Jackson has done it again! The story, the dialog, the humor, the sets, the scenery... everything was absolutely wonderful!!! Definitely a must see
The difference between the two formats is quite extraordinary. This is the first major film that has used HFR... from 24 which is what we normally see to 48. It's like going from VHS straight to Blu-Ray. The picture is brighter and much smoother. If it's available in your area I recommend going to see it in this new format.

I really enjoyed Jackson's latest foray into Middle Earth. I have been a huge fan of Tolkien's work since I discovered it in college, and this visualization of The Hobbit was first rate! The New Zealand scenery used was breathtaking, and the casting and scripting was top notch, as was the costuming and CGI. I highly recommend it to any viewers over 12, as some of the monsters may be a little to real and scary for a younger audience. I can't wait for the next part and the journey into Mirkwood!

LOR set the bar, Hobbit maintains that and maybe a bit more. Story follows closely to the book, actors give life and add there talent to it. Special affects again are excellent. Now lets talk about HFR 3D, crisp clean with an odd enhanced feeling. Did I like it, or should I say dislike it? I would say I was ok with it one way or the other, 3D was very good and I admit I flinched a couple of times. In my defense when a lopped off head comes flying at you I think I can be excused my momentary hysteria.
Go see it, enjoy it, WHY do I have to wait for the next two!

Peter Jackson delivers again. With this movie, he sets the stage for the epic events of the LOTR and at the same time gives us a more complex, yet accurate retelling of Frodo's adventures with the dwarves. The 3D HFR enhanced the view experience and since there was no added cost (to me) I thoroughly enjoyed it. I am really looking forward to the next two movies!

Well done acting and superb special effects and camerawok. Peter Jackson doesn't dissapoint. As good as the 3 LOTR movies and eagerly awaiting part 2.
I was somewhat dissappointed that the entire story didn't make it into the movie, but at 2:46 for the first 1/3 of the book or so I can see why.
I was pleasantly suprised by the "Real3D feature on the Marcus Ultrascreen here. I cannot see 3D in reallife and do not have "stereo vision" - one eye or the other only - so the concern was that the old "red/blue" glasses effect would make the movie unwatchable for me. Not the case. While I didn't see any 3D items the movie itself was beautifully shot and enjoyable to watch.
Pros well paced, great story, great actors
Yes, I recommend this movie.

The movie was fantastic in almost every category. The characters were believable. The only criticism was the general appearance of the dwarves. They generally looked a bit artificial. But, that did not detract from the overall superior quality of the movie.

The movie did drag a little bit at the beginning but it picked up pace in the middle and was quite exciting til the end. There were a lot of scenes in the first hour and a half that could have been shortened, as they were repetitive and sometimes unnecessary. The last hour and half was pretty good - the dialogue, the effects and the acting met my expectations.
Pros great story, great actors
Cons slow

The best 3D movie I have ever seen. It was like you were actually in the movie. Breathe taking special affects.
The only issue was the story took so long to get going same as the book.
But once the action began it was great!

The only part I was not too fond of was the Great Goblin in the caves of the Misty Mountains. He was a little too cartoonsish. The balance between the seriousness and the comedy of the dwarfs was fantastic. I have never laughed while being held up in suspense so much. Bilbo of course, was fantastic! His perfect pretentious poise he holds at the beginning of the movie perfectly transforms into his more adventurous, loving, Tookish side. I cannot wait for the next two!

I loved this movie and can't wait for the next two.
Peter Jackson brings back the excitement of Middle-earth in The Hobbit - An Unexpected Journey. He gives us insight to the history of the Dwarves, explores Radagast The Brown and his eccentricities and even reveals a little more about Gandalf. Sure, Jackson took some liberties with the story line by adding elements that weren't in the book and changing others that were. But what a ride. I saw it at 12:01 AM with my 24 year old son in 48 fps 3-D and we were both impressed with the quality and clarity of the production. The 3-D wasn't overdone but gave you a feeling of being in the scene, just off to the side watching everything as it unfolds (and there was lots of action to watch unfold). It certainly enhanced the scene of the Dwarves in the Goblin caves. And don't get me started about the scene where Bilbo meets Gollum. Just fantastic!
Overall I would encourage everyone to see this movie. It is visually stunning, well acted with a great adaptation from the book.
Pros well paced, great story, great actors

Wow. I wanted to love this movie. I walked into it so attached to the JR Tolkein world - both from reading and re-reading the books and from watching the movies.
<spoiler alert>
So, I forced myself to sit still through the first hour and a half while Bilbo freaked out that there were guests in his house. Once they finally left Hobbiton, I was hoping but not confident that things would get better. As Bilbo was joining the party of dwarves he freaked out that he'd forgotten a handkerchief. The movie had been so slow up to this point that I actually began to fear we would have a 15 minute scene of Bilbo running back to his house to get a handkerchief and then catching up with the party. Luckily - that didn't happen, but the movie barely picked up pace and I was so worn out and bored from the first hour of the movie, that even the beautiful Rivendell sets and the inspiring shots of the incredible New Zealand landscape failed to kindle any excitement or anticipation for the remainder of the movie. I found myself checking my watch and phone to see how much longer this thing was. When I realized I still had an hour and a half to go I almost got up and left. But still - being the loyal Tolkein fan that I am, I forced myself to stay. And things did pick up a little after that - but I was so disengaged with the movie at this point and had so thoroughly lost any suspension of disbelief that I could not muster the stamina to sit through the remainder. I finally decided to get up and walk out of the theater thinking I may decide to return after going to the bathroom or getting a snack. However, once I had left the screening room, I realized I had no desire to return and so left the entire theater complex.
<end spoiler alert>
This experience left me disappointed with Peter Jackson. The magic of the Lord of the Rings trilogy was entirely absent from The Hobbit. I admired the beautiful sets, acting and landscapes while marveling at how incredibly boring and painful it was to try and get lost in the story.
This movie must also be a huge disappointment for New Zealand, which has banked on the success of The Hobbit to boost tourism. Maybe its not a complete loss for New Zealand because the landscape does look beautiful, but The Hobbit doesn't add to the allure of the country, it only depends on it(unsuccessfully) to try and hold our attention.
The Hobbit was a small work compared to the Lord of the Rings. And it's story was not as momentous as the one in the Lord of the Rings. Yet, Jackson has broken up The Hobbit into three parts - and made the first part 2.75 hours. Unfortunately, after seeing the first 2/3 of The Hobbit, I can definitively report that Jackson did not succeed in justifying the 2.75 hour running time of the first movie and I am hopeful but not confident that the second two films(maybe they'll make them one film) will be better.
I feel like I was tricked into spending 14 dollars(13 dollar HFR fee plus 1 dollar movie-tickets-com fee) for a long boring invitation to spend 28 dollars to watch two more long drawn out stories when the remaining 2 parts of The Hobbit trilogy come out. The funny thing is, I love the Tolkein world enough, and I want to see the visual depiction of the imagery in that world enough, that I will probably watch the second two in hopes that they are better - and I will probably rent The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and skip to the last hour or so, to see the interaction with Gollum.
If Jackson had cut this thing to an hour and half, I probably wouldn't have had the reaction I did. It just highlights how important it is for a story teller to respect the time, patience and attention of his audience. It also highlights the power of Tolkein - that even with this long boring movie, I will still probably see the second and third movies. However, Hollywood should take note - if you do this too people too much, people will stop shelling out to see these things in theaters.
Oh, I'd also like to say something about HFR(High Frame Rate). HFR creates a significant change in the movie experience. Everything looks more real - and thus any fanciful embellishments look a little ridiculous and the acting gets a much closer look. The Hobbit just barely made the cut in these two categories. It must have been incredibly difficult to bring such a fantastic world to life. If Jackson hadn't spent as much time and money as he did on the details of the sets and the CGI, HFR would have completely ruined The Hobbit and I would probably have given it a 1 star instead of 2. BUT - I am excited to see how film makers change their stories and techniques to adapt to the new level of realism afforded by the switch from 24 to 48 FPS. Good actors and good stories will benefit from the switch and bad actors and bad stories will suffer. We may see Hollywood rejecting this HFR precisely because of this effect.
Pros nice sets landscape
Cons slow, story does not justify an entire movie, dialogue is boring
No, I do not recommend this movie.
