I really like the suoerman movies.. solid story line ,, pretty hard to mess it up. This movie was more about destroying buildings than anything else .. Krypton Scenes were well done and had a great story .... the earth part is where the movie falls apart ... it didnt have the SUPERMAN (HERO) feel that I wanted it to have. Very long movie with way too many destruction scenes and too little character interaction.. Lawrence Fishburne a poor choice for Perry White .. no Jimmy Olson Character ///

I was excited about this movie. The main villan was good. So was the begining, when they were on krypton. The rest of the movie seemed very much like the old ones.

Henry Cavill was great as Superman/Clark Kent. The character of Superman is a little more dry than some of the previous versions but adds just enough humor. I did enjoy the more in depth depiction of what happened on Krypton. I wasn't thrilled about the less than appealing chemistry between Cavill and Amy Adams. I have always pictured Lois Lane has a brunette not a redhead. I think the twist in the plot offered a slightly darker tone but different enough to keep it interesting and the graphics were very cool. I also like the final battle between Zod. Lastly, did I mention that David Beckham has nothing on Henry Cavill where abs are concerned....

So over the top it's almost bad. Start's out very good showing Krypton. Then I think it loses touch by trying to go off path, not be linear in the middle, and you lose the story. From the time Clark lands on earth to the end it just becomes a visual spectacle of flashbacks that lacks a strong story. Maybe it was trying to channel Inception, but I just didn't get it. It would have been better if linear. Who didn't want to see Ma and Pa Kent find the spaceship? Who doesn't want to see the first time he realizes his strength? All of that was lost... and seemingly replaced by an hour or more long fight, which was incredible, but almost too much.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe sneaked up on us and hit us with a series of great films that has no end in sight. Because Marvel Studios had creative control, they presented movies that understood the characters and the spectacle in equal measure. DC's path to cinematic greatness has been in isolated busts and duds. The first four Superman movies started epically and ended horribly. Burton's Batman movies help promise and were ruined by Shumacher. Superman Returns and Green Lantern were tepid when they should have made our jaws drop.
All of that is preamble. How was The Man of Steel? It was exhilarating. It took itself seriously without being too dark. Its villains had clear, personally justifiable actions. The script was average, but the whole was taken to a greater level by the strength of the casting. Henry Cavill is a wonderful Superman.
This is the Superman movie I've been wanting to see, in which the the stakes are high and only Superman could save the day. There are action sequences here that are breathtaking. The cinematography and the fight choreography worked hand-in-hand to give us clear action that was positively riddled with iconic images.
The faults that I saw were in pacing and a few plot questions. After watching the trailers, I expected to love Kevin Costner's Pa Kent, but the script's take on him was off-putting. It felt cold and choppy, so I couldn't invest in him. Diane Lane's Martha Kent had mostly awkward moments. She seemed dour and only used as a foil, which is unfortunate.
I hope and believe that they'll be able to have more fun with the characters in the next film. We're set up for success. Clark/Superman has a purpose now, and the supporting characters are almost all in place.
Overall, I can't understand how the critics' ratings average 56% for this film and 75% for Superman Returns. The latter is a creepy mess that left me feeling blasé when the credits rolled. A Superman movie should never leave me saying "Meh." The Man of Steel left me with slaphappy exhaustion, eager to see what DC can do to match Marvel's cinematic universe.
Not once did I think about or miss the red shorts. :-)

Man of Steal stole about $40 for tickets and refreshments. A major disappointment. The screenplay was all over the place. Half the movie was made on somebody's laptop in a special effects lab or college dorm room. Very little decent acting. Little time spent of the story to develop characters and relationships. W-a-y too many feet of film spent on showing how layers of doors close on space vehicles that look like deformed vegetables. Superman acts likes he was volunteered for a job he doesn't want but loves the perk of being able to fly so he might as well give it a go. The all-star cast was simply a potpourri of Hollywood heavyweights with the writers struggling to give each his/her the number of scenes and dialogue fitting their stature.
Snyder was too quick to abandon the DC Comic hero and put his own stamp on this. The scenes are dark. Action is so loud, dark, and fast, you really can't see a thing going on. You get a subliminal message that someone died, or something blew up. Even Superman's new uniform is dull and ugly. Apparently, mom sewed it from some alligator hide she found in the infant's capsule.
A guy who used to be able to reverse the rotation of a planet can now barely hold up oil rig structure. He spends half the movie losing fights. Man of Steel is a big disappointment. Lost is the classic charm, romance, and innocence of the original Superman.

The first half of the movie was pretty good. When Zod and his minions show up it goes downhill from there. The effects felt almost over the top taking elements from other sci fi films like the Matrix, Avatar, and Transformers (and not in a good way)

Yawn; is it over, YET? Predictable. Sequel coming. 3D was a waste. This movie could not have been any shorter in 2D. This movie tried to be The Avengers all wrapped up in one character. Avengers was much better. Movie would have been much better if it were about 20 minutes shorter. Just WAY TOO LONG. But the 20 somethings & the Superman geeks probably thought it was, like, the best, like movie, like ever. If you like special effects and CGE, lots and lots of CGE, you will like this movie. The plot was extremely predictable - Superbaby grows up, is internally confused as to what he really wants to be. If you're born to help people, help people. Just help people in shorter movies. Will not waste my money at the theater on the three or four sequels that are bound to follow. Finally, what was with the sudden zoom ins with the camera work? Once was okay; I lost count or interest after that.

Story line was good, and yes Henry is very handsome. The only problem I had with it is the amount of time they spent throwing people around and destroying everything. They totally demolished the city (looked like NY but I suppose it was "Metropolis"). No one seemed upset about it, nor did they show anyone distressed except for one scene where a person that worked at the Daily Planet got trapped. Yet they never introduced the character so you really did not engage in that part of the drama. And the army kept shooting and blowing things up when it was doing no good. They could have cut about 30 minutes of that stuff. It really got old. The movie is 2 hours and 23 minutes (or something like that) so they could have cut it down.

This movie is full of action, and makes a new and somewhat different presentation of Superman's history.
While it retains the same basic elements, that is, that Superman came from planet Krypton, being sent to Earth by his parents prior to the planet's demise; that Superman travelled through space for a very long distance, and that he was accompanied with recordings of his planet's history and knowledge.

While Man of steel fallows much of the story of superman, it lacks the purity of the fundamental believes of Clark Kent/Superman. According to the CW's Smallville, Jonathan and Martha Kent have always taught Clark that killing is wrong, and that no matter what that Clark should aways try and find a way to be believe in the better of people. The movie how ever introduces a new Man of Steel one not bound by anything. How ever there lays a huge problem that the director and writers have to face. How to make someone without limits have an edge to which he cannot step back from. One thing I don't agree with was the choice in actress for Lois Lane, while Amy Adams has nice features her character didn't show the strength of the Lois Lane fans are used to.

First 1/3 of the movie are nearly 5-star perfect. The exposition and case statement/dilemma for Kal-El are beautifully set up, acted and scored. Reminded me of a Terence Malick film.
Unfortunately, the wheels come off for the last 2/3 of movie. The story, acting, and direction for the last hour are so uneven and obviously slapped together in post-production but I'm tempted to say they might still have a perfect movie laying on the cutting room floor. The effects are layered on too thick, the fight sequences go on too long, and the characters lose all emotional resonance under the weight of all this effect mayhem.
Do yourself a favor and leave after he discovers the Kryptonian Scout ship in Canada, then wait and see if they get it right in the sequel.

Great movie with interesting story line. My only complaint was that all of us (5 people) thought the sound was way too loud!!! We were all plugging our ears with our finger and we could still hear.

Zack Snyder had a lot to prove with his iteration on the Superman Legend. He had to prove that he could reboot a franchise that stalled after the lackluster Superman Returns. He had to prove that the Man of Steel could be SUPER.
To do this he brought in a collaborative team who scored major success with the Dark Knight trilogy and followed a similar format.
It worked. Man of Steel is, for the first time, a Superman film where the hero comes across as capable of doing more than lifting heavy things.
Cavill is impossibly handsome as the titular hero but also proves that he is more than a pretty face by infusing his sparse dialogue with genuine emotion.
The rest of the cast does equally well with what little they were given to work. Hopefully future installments will allow these actors to interact more and show off their capable acting chops.
The story serves only to forward the narrative from one giant action set-piece to another, but that is what this movie is about. Telling an origin story and getting to the goods.
Special kudos goes out to Snyder who reigned in his penchant for ultra-slow motion and took his distinct style in the opposite direction. The action in this film is frantic and bombastic, filled with quick cuts and jarring transitions that imply the speed and power of Superman and his villainous counterparts.
Michael Shannon as Zod delivers diabolical with gusto and a mencing sneer as he chews through scenery with aplomb.
Critics find a lot to pick apart in this outing, and for the most part, they are right. This movie is not without it's flaws, but the best thing about this ultimate popcorn flick is that you can forgive these things and just sit back and watch as a new Superman for this generation is born.

This was a spectacular film. First time story line showing Kryton before Clark arrives on earth. I liked how they flashed back to his childhood and the life lessons that he was taught. It was good that they stuck with the life lessons that he was always taught from his earth father Jonathon Kent. I think that plays a huge role in what "Superman" becomes. His basic desire to do the right thing and to make sure there is equality and such. Great film!!!

May not satisfy hardcore Superman fans who strictly want things exactly as they were in the past comics, and also may lose non-comic fan movie goers with too much action and a longer than average superhero film. However, despite being a bit too long and losing some in the lengthy action sequences, the movie delivers what the character has been in need of. A great origin story, setting up our next big superhero franchise from the DC side. Just wish they would have cut some of the action for the sake of your average movie audience and may have wanted to further explain the phantom zone, as it is an essential part of the movie, but is never explained to the audience.

I cannot say enough how too much shaky camerawork DESTROYS the movie experience. I was so looking forward to this movie because of the genius Batman trilogy masterminded by Chris Nolan. Those movies were perfection and worthy of epic classic status. Man of Steel, however, won't even be a part of our Blu-ray collection.
First the positives: the main characters were cast beautifully. All of the Cals/Clarks were spot on, Amy Adams is the best Lois Lane I've ever seen, and Costner and Lane were brilliant as Clark's parents. Russell Crowe redeemed himself (from his stint as Javert) as Cal's father, and I found myself wishing he was in the movie more.
This leads me to my main complaint: the characters were so wonderfully acted, and the STORIES were compelling - but the movie needed more of that and LESS of the repetitive fighting. After the 20th or so "powerful blow, smashing through a building," it became, well, boring. I actually found myself thinking, "alright already, move on!" Add to that the overdone shaky camera and, well, I just wanted the movie to end long before it actually did.
I hope they make sequel with this cast... but I hope that Nolan does it by himself, This epic character, classic story, and brilliant cast deserve the genius that brought us the greatest version of Batman to step outside of the DC pages.

For me, when I hear "Superman" I automatically think "Christopher Reeve". But with Henry Cavill's portrayal of the Last son of Krypton, he may have very well made the iconic role is very own. The writing was excellent, the plot was even better. Casting was perfect. Everyone will be waiting for the sequel to the new brand of Superman.
