Don;t let the Matt Damon fool you. This is not a environmental movie. It is a film about values and the indomitable American spirit and guess what Matt Damon loves America. You can tell it in every frame of this amazing movie. Bravo and Hal Holbrook give a performance that should have been nominates for an Oscar.
I love Matt Damon, one of my favorite actors. And he acted very well in this movie, as did the entire cast. But the movie is a large, vacuous sham. I get it that I'm supposed to hate the big company, love the rural folk and shut down all fracking. Global is so bad, and Hal Holbrook is so decent, and rural America has never looked better that it's easy to draw back from those stereotypes and mentally deflate them. But I actually would like to know more about the pros and cons of tracking because we will have to decide. This movie provides not one smidgeon of sensible insight. Just a series of ginned-up scenes. But I am still looking for answers, and for Matt Damon's next movie.
This movie delivered what we hoped for; entertainment, interest and timely subject well done. This is a well cast movie that takes us into the heart of poor farm communities with some brilliance. It pulled us in and held us till the end. I am afraid if I say anything about the story line I would give it away. It was a bit like watching a movie of swimmers and you can see the sharks and they really can't. You will be surprised. Don't read anything about this movie, Just go see it. Perfect performances by Frances McDormand, Matt Damon, John Kazinsky especially. Loved it.
The economic decline gives way to a big natural gas company who is trying to secure drilling rights in a small farm town. They send in their corporate sales partners Steve Butler (Matt Damon) and Sue Thomason (Frances McDormand) to sway each farmer to sell their land and move. But in swoops what is believed to be an environmentalist to try to sway the town's folks from selling. The story unfolds from there... The paid critics were “Luke-warm” about this movie, but I don't think it's bad at all. Matt Damon is an excellent actor. He will make you believe in his character. The movie is a bit slow, but all of the pieces do come together in a surprise ending. If you are a Matt Damon fan "Promised Land" is worth a look.
