Daniel Day-Lewis is the greatest character actor and Sally Field was Mary Todd Lincoln reincarnated. The scenes between these two actors are breath taking. The whole movie feels like being a "fly on the wall" in the Lincoln White House. Great acting all around and sound historical reference in "Team of Rivals". Huzah !!!!

This is outstanding. The character development on top of the obviously gripping story is a true work of art. The political manipulation that went into the passage of the 13th Amendment was fascinating, and makes it so clear that these issues and their solutions are still part of today's challenges. What we need is more statesmen like those in 1865. The lobbyists are still around!

Daniel Day Lewis has done a terrific job in this movie and is certainly a candidate for the Academy Award. The story was well told and the importance of the 13th Amendment was highlighted in a way that I have never seen on the big screen. This is one movie you should not miss.

This is the story of the origin of the 13th Amendment that abolished slavery where Lincoln is the main character. It is not the story of Lincoln's life as it depicits the only his last 6 months. The acting is superb; the scenes protray strong historical context. Unfortunately 2 hrs 40 min of weighty, tense political dialog with few breaks gets tiresome. I think that anyone would agree that this is dialog-heavy movie. Personally, watching a display of political of machinations and backroom dealing is not entertaining or enlightening. There is also a message that political corruption is acceptable when "the cause is just" that I found disturbing.

Dramatic movie with great acting. A study in character that makes a surprisingly interesting drama out of the political maneuvers in Congress over the passage of the 13th Amendment. Convinced this viewer that Lincoln was most likely our greatest president, because of his principles, his intelligence, his persistence in adversity, and his empathy for everyone he came in contact with.

If you're looking for a Civil War movie, this is not it... if you are looking for political drama with the Civil War as a background, this movie is for you. Heavy on dialogue, this movie is a bit of a throwback. The acting is outstanding on nearly every level.
Reading the book "Team of Rivals" would be a plus for anyone not familiar with the Lincoln presidency and the unique political atmosphere of the 1860s. The portrayal of Lincoln was fair and balanced. Anyone thinking he was a racist will be pleasantly surprised.
A must see film.

It was a good movie don't get me wrong but there were a few parts about it that could have improved to make it better. Sometimes it was hard to understand Lincoln and you really had to focus to keep up with everything he is saying. But the acting was great and I really did learn a lot more about this whole time period just in this movie than ever in history class. And yes it does help to look up about the 13th Amendment before going to the movie. And I wish that after the movie that they wrote a few lines of what happened to most freed slaves after the amendment passed. But I can defnitely see some Oscars from this movie!

Perhaps in a thousand years President Abraham Lincoln will be the only thing for which America is remembered. And with this definitive film about him Daniel Day-Lewis owns the role for all time. Thought Lincoln's mannerisms and personality were fairly presented based on what I have read about him. Sparked my interest in that time in history again. Wish I understood how intriguing a story that was when I was in high school supposedly learning it.

As a huge fan of the 16th president, I enjoyed this movie. The all star cast was excellent. There will be some oscar nods Im sure. The story centers around Lincolns attempt to get the 13th ammendment passed before the end of the war. The true story lent itself to some drama, but there were some definite slow moments. Maybe because we all know the outcome, the film did not stir much emotion. If you are looking for a real escape from the daily grind, this probably isn't the best film to see.

It helps to have a sense of the history as to what the 13th Amendment is about. The movie is centered on the drama of how the amendment was passed. The moviegoer gets a sense of how government worked early on and still applies to how it works today.
Daniel Day Lewis was made for this role. He is amazing in his portrayal of Lincoln. He should receive a nod from the Academy in the Best Actor category. All the other actors were simply tremendous. Tommy Lee Jones is perfect in his role.
Understand that this movie is a lesson in history. There are no "car chases." The movie is all dialogue, but well paced. This is a movie, story, well worth seeing.

It helps to read Wikipedia about the 13th Amendment before going to the movie. It jumps right in and tends to presume we know more about American history than most of us in fact do.The movie is not about freeing slaves, done in the Emancipation Proclimation, or about extending equal rights to blacks. Lincoln understood as the war wound down that blacks would likely be reinslaved after the war unless there was an outright ban on all slavery via constitutional amendment. This movie is about politics in a divided nation at war and how Lincoln managed to get the amendment passed, against all odds.
This movie is a must see just for the performances. It is a wonderful assembly of many of the best actors in the business giving great performances great and small. Daniel Day Lewis is Oscar worthy. Tommy Lee Jones is great, playing gruff as ursual but with a surprising twist at the end. James Spader should receive a supporting actor nod. Jackie Earle Haley was so good I did not even know it was him until after the move. There are countless other great performances and great moments.
Go see!

This was an excellent movie. The timing could not have been better. It is amazing that after all these years aditudes have not changed much in many segments of our society.
Unfortunately bigotry based on race, gender, or ethnic orgin is a fiber of the American culture.

This is a wonderful movie about one of the most revered American leaders of all time. History's two-dimensional view of President Lincoln is replaced with a revealing expose. Lincoln's deep sensitivity and thoughtfulness is juxtaposed against a sense of humor that helped him bear the enormous burden of leading the Union during a Civil War that cost over 500,000 lives. President Lincoln's skillful ability to work within the political process, timing the end of the Civil War with the passage of the 14th amendment which abolished slavery, is the main focus of the story. Daniel-Day Lewis' portrayal of Lincoln is the essence of the movie and will likely bring him an Oscar. Sally Field's performance was solid but her delivery reminded us of Mrs. Doubtfire. Tommy Lee Jones was his usual irascible self, playing a somewhat irreverent Benjamin Franklin type character. The movie is a good 20-30 minutes too long but worth the trip.
