Best acting of any film I have seen this year and in many years. DD Lewis IS Lincoln. Tommy Lee Jones, Sally Fields and the rest of the cast is also amazing. Kudos to Spielberg who is truly one of the greatest filmmakers EVER.

My attention never waivered as my eyes were glued to the screen and before I knew it the movie was over. Amazing acting especially Daniel Day-Lewis as Lincoln. He IS Lincoln and you forget he is acting. Tommy Lee Jones is also very good as is the rest of the cast. Spielberg is at his best with fact-based historical dramas (Schindler's List, Saving Private Ryan) and is a masterful storyteller. If Lincoln doesn't win lots of awards, especially for Day-Lewis, it's a crime!
This is not for those with short attention spans who prefer action movies and brainless "comedies". This is a dialog driven movie (which is not only a history lesson of the end of the Civil War and Lincoln's determined fight to pass the 13th Amendment abolishing slavery it is also a look at Lincoln's character and the toll the war took on Lincoln. Lincoln fought for the 13th Amendment despite the huge political risks; more like Obama than present-day Republicans. Maybe the Republicans could learn a lesson from this movie.
Lincoln has consistently been third at the box office for many weeks after Breaking Dawn and Skyfall which should tell you something. GO SEE THIS EXCELLENT MOVIE IF YOU HAVE MORE THAN TWO BRAIN CELLS TO RUB TOGETHER!

The movie was great, but I'm a detail person and I kept finding myself getting lost at looking at the set design and details and missing dialog! That isn't the movies fault, just mine. It was moving and inspiring, though provoking and, the best part, it was true. I highly recommend it for anyone over the age of 15.

Daniel Day Lewis was exceptional as was Tommy Lee Jones. This is an incredible movie that should be seen by anyone who has any interest in American history. The acting was superb and the setting very real.
Like watching Titanic, you know the ending, but its this incredible story that is so well told that makes this a must see.

This movie is great not only because it's about our most admired and beloved President but because the acting is superb. Daniel Day-Lewis gives a magnificent and vivid portrayal of Lincoln the way this icon American has been relayed to us by numerous biographers. Mr. Day-Lewis performance is no doubt worthy of an Oscar. Also Sally Field gives a brilliant performance of the complex personality of Mary Todd Lincoln and Tommy Lee Jones executes wonderfully the legislative shrewdness and ability of congressman Thaddeus Stevens. Both should also carry an Oscar. This film also presents Lincoln the politician, with all the virtues and evils displayed and needed to obtain a higher goal: abolition of slavery and passage of the 13th Amendment. Thank you Mr. Steven Spielberg for such a great film and the opportunity to live history!

A very good epic consisting of great acting and dialogue. I feel the actors were passionate in their roles in that they each gave Lincoln sentiment to consider before signing the 13th Amendment. This movie could be a great influence in today's situation as republicans and democrats can come together and display bipartisanship to overcome adversity and rebuild America's political and economic situation.

This is a fascinating story of a president pushing through an unpopular piece of legislation in the House of Representatives (a not so concealed metaphor to a current president who will go nameless). It is visually striking. Day-Lewis has created an Oscar deserving portrayal of Lincoln as a high pitched thoughtful man with a wry sense of humor. Yet, the film is cluttered by too much information condensed into too little time. This makes the story drag. Important information (as in missing scenes) are replaced by quick conversations explaining and connecting the absent dots. Two and a half hours are simply not enough time to tell this tale. But its a long time to sit watching.
It is fascinating to see a president who was so accessible; to see a country at war without the kind of overbearing security we have all grown accustomed to in recent years. In many ways this vision of an earlier America is both surprising and romanticized.
Sally Field's version of Mrs. Lincoln is quite unique. And although she will probably receive an Oscar nod, it somehow feels at odds with the actual history of her character. But in the end this is a film and not history. Lincoln, the film, is a masterful work that tells the story of how little politics has changed in the past century and a half. Its definitely worth seeing, but its important to remember that years from now people will be picking it apart for its imperfections, just as Lincoln's enemies attacked him.

After the 16th President of the United States was somewhat lampooned earlier this year as he chopped off the heads of vampires, Steven Spielberg was finishing work on a more serious look at Honest Abe, aptly title “Lincoln”, and though it may lack the action of Vamp Abe it is certainly every bit as powerful in its portrayal of a torn nation, and the man who will stop at nothing to bring it back together. The intensity in the film is drawn from heated conversations about slavery and the Civil War, and this word-sparring is stuff for the ages as a whole host of famous faces get screen time to connive and throw insults across the House of Representatives floor. Tommy Lee Jones is stellar as a Republican whose verbose insults are like bolts of electricity jumping out of the screen. But of course it is Daniel Day-Lewis who offers up yet another transforming performance as the titular character. His mannerisms, voice, look, and style give us not just a character, but another person entirely. He channels the spirit of Lincoln in every form and fashion, and it’s scary-good to watch. He’ll be in a familiar place come time for the Best Actor nominations to be passed out.

Steven Spielberg has outdone himself this time. His Lincoln, as portrayed by Daniel Day-Lewis is a masterpiece of historical fact and drama. Day-Lewis nailed the role of Lincoln fighting for the passage of the thirteenth amendment to the constitution. We saw in him all the President's emotions from his "stories" to his compassion and his depression. Sally Field as Mary Todd Lincoln was also spot on. Who would have thought that she would be ideal for the part? She played Mary with the passion and the zeal that showed how frightened and emotionally frail the real Mary Lincoln was. The other members of the cast round this film out to make it an Oscar runaway.

Spielberg once again proves his cinematic genius with this gripping portrayal of President Lincoln's life from January 1865 until his assassination in April of that year. The plot centers around the political battle to pass in the U.S. House of Representatives the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution to abolish slavery. This occurs in the context of a bitter war that is winding down, but far from a certain end. We see not just the public Presidential persona but Lincoln the man, played spendidly by Daniel Day Lewis. This movie is excellent in all of its facets. It is so refreshing to see excellent films about serious matters, amidst the Hollywood flood of fantastic and gratuitous sex and viloence. Lincoln will certainly garner several Academy Award nominations.

This was thoroughly enjoyable film. From what I have studied about the last days of the Civil War and Lincoln's administration it was pretty accurate where the overall sense of what was going on is concerned. Hollywood seems to think it can make history more interesting by adding or subtracting what it deems necessary. We can never know the exact conversations and the type of language used, but can get a pretty good idea from letters, diaries, etc. The subject (13th Amendment) was very controverial in that time. Just as things in our era, the people involved had no way of predicting all the ramifications of the amendment, but it was something that needed done. Lincoln is properly protrayed as a man who knew what he wanted and that it was the right thing to do. I don't think the crude language was necessary, but the film, overall was very good .

This movie was informative, well acted, and held my interest throughout. I think that every American should see "Lincoln" to understand how our Country was formed. Also, to understand how wonderful a leader President Lincoln was. He was a man of limited education yet a man ahead of his time.

Lincoln is portrayed as a multi-faceted man whose humanity was startling and uncommon. He was both above his times and yet of it -- not better in every way, but better in many ways. Daniel Day-Lewis believable both when standing up for principle and when prevaricating.

It only deals with Lincoln and the repbulican party slowly working the avenues they needed to pass the 13th amendment in spite of the democratic party's opposition. Acting of the entire cast was spectacular

This movie is so average, disappointing, and a let down, it is not even worth the time to write a real, full, no-spoilers review. Here you have Lincoln, freedom for slaves, the 13th amendment, the Flying Nun !, James Spader being James Spader (ho ho ho, ha ha), Spielberg, this movie, on paper, has it all!
Or maybe not so much. I never thought I'd see a movie that could make Spielberg's 2011 Christmas rip-off super-dog War Horse, which challenged Hugo as the biggest el-flop-O woof-woof doggy of last Christmas look good, but here you have it. A WIDE, wide miss, no question. The maestro takes a great story and kills it! 1 hour too long among the most egregious offenses. The visual of dumping a cart full of amputated limbs into a pit of amputated limbs. Adds so much, and of course, we couldn't 'see that one comin.' And the follow-up: "Where/when do I enlist?" emotes that great thesbian I omitted from above, Joseph Gordon Levitt. He brings extra triteness to his role. But, of course, it is politically incorrect to say "The Emperor (Steven Speilberg) isn't wearing any clothes for a second year in a row!
No, let's hop on the bandwagon and cheer this pile of meandering, pandering, PC mush. Just because of who the director is, and the cast, and the $$$$ spent to put it all on film. So it MUST be a great film, right?
Uh,.........no. Remember, this is the guy who made AMISTAD. If this movie had been 1/2 as good as that movie, and remember also, in THAT movie Spielberg was handicapped by having to work with Matthew McConaughey, from whom he got a good performance, so Spielberg has PROVEN how to get a GREAT movie on the general topic of the US history re: slavery and treatment of blacks, so my expectations of this movie were dashed by the reality ... a formulaic, sodden, trivial, overblown, "phoned-it-in" effort. OH! I forgot. The scene of James Spader running from the Capitol to Lincoln, waiting in the White House! A joke! Anyone who has ever lived in or visited Washington knows this cannot be done in anything like the time hinted at in the movie. What a farce! Dumb. Cute, but dumb. Bad writing if nothing else.
My advice: skip the rip, wait for this turkey to come out on DVD, then rent it, never buy it, you'll see, I'm right. Or, do as I did because I'm an idiot and pay theatre prices + $14 for snacks and have your pocket picked. At least my wife isn't talking to me as a result of my feelings; but she never saw Amistad, and having ME for a spouse, she disagrees with everything I say about the arts ... just to get even.
