First rate movie with historical wonders for those who like American Politics. As is normal with Hollywood, they threw in a scandalous rumor at the end about Thaddeus Stevens to juice things up, but such is Hollywood. What balanced that out was a very nice depiction of the republican party in its infancy fighting the more established Pro-Slavery democratic party. I would have expected Hollywood to moderate that and somehow make the liberals the heroes. But that didn't happen - 5 stars for the good guys!

Day Lewis, Fields and Jones created a pregnant insight into the coming of the 13th Amendment and the story gave poignant insight into the private life of Lincoln. A history buff, I never realized the monumental efforts that were threaded to bring freedom to fruition.

I got bogged down in the beginning of this movie. The dialogue is, of course, the English used during the time period. There were moments when I got lost and struggled to keep track of what was going on and who was doing what. The acting by Day-Lewis is superb, however. Around the middle of the movie, I finally caught up and understood everything that was going on. This is strictly a historical picture with a lot of dialogue between politicians. Nonetheless, it is a good flick and a great history lesson.

Day-Lewis deserves an Oscar, as does Field. A long movie that's not action packed, but it did not drag at all. Very interesting film that apparently is quite close to reality- several items I was unaware of were included like the peace delegation sent by the South.
Must see if you are a US history buff, Civil War buff, film buff!

This was a great movie about Lincoln, but don't be deceived if you are expecting another war drama action flick from Steven Spielberg. It is a very heavy dialogue based movie, and is two and a half hours long. It is a movie that will be recognized at the oscars and honestly might be hard to get through for most people. Anyways Daniel-Day Lewis did great as always, as Lincoln and will be nominated for a Best Actor award and possibly win. I thought Steven Spielberg beautifully shot this movie as well, and this movie is a great flick, but you have to recognize who Lincoln was with the movie, and not everyone will be able to watch the whole thing off the bat, but it was a superb movie.

Once again Spielberg and company bring us another lesson in filmmaking. The dialog is excellent, the technical direction and costumes flawless. The trouble is that it all hangs on a plot that is just deathly dull. It's no lie, politics IS like making sausage, or in this case, watching paint dry. There's just not enough plot going on here to hold the attention of most viewers. And of course it contains all the patented Spielberg audience manipulation techniques that drive me absolutely batty, punctuated by the ever present victorious group "happy clap" when the bill finally passes Congress. All in all this movie is for someone who doesn't mind spending three hours sorting out characters and listening to dialog. I fear most people will react like my teenage daughters, they'll just sleep through most of it.

Slow slow slow! Movie title should have been 13th amendment as to not mislead the audience. Slavery was a sad and horrific part of our history and Hollywood has done another masterful job at keeping it alive. Two and a half hours to tell the story of the vote on the 13th amendment is like watching the grass grow on a hot dry day. The important point is that the 13 amendment to our Constitution was made however I didn't need to waste 9000 seconds of my life watching something that was not advertised.

The story was excellent. Hopefully, most of it was true or close to true. Only history experts will know what is true and what is Hollywood...the average movie-goer has no idea. I'm going to research a few things for myself to decide the accuracy of history in the movie.

Spielberg does not disappoint with this masterpiece. Those looking for a Saving Private Ryan style action movie will, however, be disappointed by this movie. Though there is one "action" scene within the movie, the rest of the movie follows Lincoln's personal battles and the battle to pass the 13th Amendment. I highly recommend this movie. It follows the journey of arguably America's greatest president.

Very interesting look at politics. No matter what point in time you look at, politics is a dirty business. Lincoln was portrayed as a very patient, politically astute individual. He may not have been a well educated man, but he knew people and he knew what he had to do to get things done. He saw the big picture very clearly, which is a hard thing to do at times. To me it is a miracle that he was born into the time that this country desperately needed his insight and wisdom.

The only thing I can say negative about this movie is that it is not a movie for the average movie audience. It is highly intellectual and appeals to and is appreciated by educated and older audiences. Sally Fields deserves to be nominated for best supporting actress for her superb performance! Without her I feel the movie would have lacked a real human connection.
Abraham Lincoln, I believe, was played as I assume he must have been in life. Daniel Day Lewis took the character and dared not imbellish in any way. He was right on and indeared Lincoln to those not familiar with his astounding prescence of character, his honesty, his humility, and his lofty intellect.
The movie follows the chronology of events of an important and historic piece of legislation to its conclusion that is sometimes slow and a bit boring for the average viewer, not enough action and not enough of a real human story to capture the imagination.

The politics of the 13th amendment to the Constitution told in the manner of The West Wing. Good politicians and bad politicians. A frightening parallel to current political inertia. Star turns for Tommy Lee Jones in one of his best roles ever, and Sally Field(!) astounding as Mary Todd Lincoln. James Spader is greasily amusing and Daniel Day Lewis unbelievable in the title role. Spielberg has done it again.

Lincoln is a compelling movie about the courage and craftiness of a President intent on preserving and rebuilding a united nation. The acting is superb -- especially Daniel Day Lewis. But it does take time for the movie to build to a level of suspense that culminates in the vote on whether slavery should be abolished. I learned a lot about Lincoln that I didn't know -- primarily about the strength of his character and convictions but also about his willingness to bargain with, lobby and even coerce his opponents into compliance with his end goal. I also saw a softer side to the President as a husband and loving father. It's a great flick.

I know a lot of people love this moving and it will get multiple Oscar nods, but I found it painfully boring as is almost every Daniel Day Lewis movie. This was very similar to There Will Be Blood which was as excrutiatingly dull. There is no doubt that DDL is one of the most talented and prolific actors in the history of cinema and his portrayal of Lincoln was amazing, but as with many period pieces, this was was just plain boring. Frankly if you want to see a historical piece about American history that is equally well acted and actually entertaining as a piece of cinema, go rent the HBO miniseries John Adams; its actually enjoyable.

Daniel Day-Lewis is superb but many of the characters and incidents are not identified or explained, and would have little meaning for those who are not well-versed in the period. The film could also benefit from some judicious cutting.

This is a great movie. I plan on seeing it again once it goes onto DVD/Bluray. This movie reminds me that democracy is an experiment and that as long as we hold true to our founding principles that our country will continue and be great. Hopefully our own elected officials can watch this and take note that their responsibility goes further than senseless bickering and that they have a responsibility to all of us. Not to seek to make us all equal, but to give us equal opportunity under the law.

I loved this movie, and I guess it brings to light that the current political climate of hatred is nothing new. But it saddens me that this is so. I find it frustrating that we've come such a short way down the path for equality from Lincoln's vision. This movie was beautifully directed and highlights the important thoughts and vision of President Lincoln and those that were fighting for equality. I am so glad they didn't over do it the scenes that most movie makers feel are necessary to keep an audience's attention, like unnecessary special effects and excessive violent and fast paced scenes. This is a wonderful movie for the ages.

Just a wonderful depiction of one the greatest presidents in US history. Wonderfully cast and the acting was superb. The set pieces and costuming were also historically accurate and brought life to the story. Daniel Day Lewis makes you believe he is Lincoln with a great supporting cast of Sally Field and Tommy Lee Jones they draw you in to the story and don't let you take your eyes from the screen. Highly recommend this movie and it's an absolute must for anyone who has an interest in U.S. history and wants a greater understanding of a truly great leader.

Extraordinary, outstanding, moving - these are just a few words that come to mind when talking about this movie. The acting was some of the best I have ever witnessed - especially that of Daniel Day- Lewis, Sally Field, and Tommy Lee Jones. The story itself was such a different aspect from that which you get in history books - it showed the human angst and courage that men grappled with throughout this bloodiest time in U.S. history, and the pain, both personal and political that President Lincoln endured. Mary Todd Lincoln was shown stronger than history has portrayed her, and you witnessed the pain of a mother struggling with grief, and a man who, as President could not express his own grief. This is a movie that is thought provoking and will stay with me for a very long time. Not a superfluous scene in the movie - every camera angle, every small subtle detail is important to the emotional story line. I will go at least once more and will recommend this to everyone who loves history and, more importantly, the human story.
