Great story and brilliant acting. Daniel Day Lewis wasn't acting -- he actually was Lincoln. He embodied Lincoln physically and illuminated his kind spirit and incredible intelligence. This portrait of Abraham Lincoln was so moving it brought tears to my eyes. All the other acting was great, too, especially Tommy Lee Jones as Thaddeus Stevens. The politics behind passing the 13th amendment is also relevant to what is going on in our politics today. The personal glimpses into the life of Lincoln and his wife, Mary Todd Lincoln, were very interesting. I would definitely recommend this movie. I am going to see it again. It makes you realize how lucky we were to have such a man as our President during such a time.
Pros well paced, great story, great actors, very moving
Every actor in this movie played their role brilliantly. It made a very important part of history come alive for me. This is one movie I will add to my home collection.
Pros well paced, great story, great actors
Yes, I recommend this movie.

The movie was visually compelling, the acting outstanding, especially by Daniel Day Lewis and the dialogue inspiring. I think the viewer would benefit by first reading Goodwin's book, so they wouldn't get bogged down trying to figure out each character's political position and viewpoint and ultimately, their importance in affecting history. This movie felt a little like a documentary, but it was emotionally compelling to witness the discord of the times and the impassioned viewpoints of the representatives, as they fought for their beliefs.
Pros great story, great actors, great dialogue
Cons slow
Yes, I recommend this movie.

This is the second time I have seen this movie. In seeing it again I saw more things than the first time. I was also impressed with how well the story line went. It did not drag at all. The acting was superb! The actors were so believable as their characters. I have reccommended to many of my friends..
Yes, I recommend this movie.

This story of Civil War era politics and ethics draws you in on a issue that is still relevant today. Even though the outcome is history (literally) the suspense and drama leading up to it keep you interested and hopeful that the right thing happens. The cast of notable actors do a great job as you get lost in the time and place through great cinematography and a well-suited soundtrack. It's a bit hard to follow the dialogue as the film starts but soon enough you are drawn into the story and all becomes clear. A good film which seems shorter than its 2.5 hr running time.
Pros well paced, great story, great actors
Yes, I recommend this movie.

A true image of people and era of the 1860's. Execellent movie. A historic event every american should see how we, as a country, came to this point, that all people should be treated as equals. Daniel Day-Lewis should win the Oscar for his image of Lincoln. Steven Spielberg and the crew did an outstanding job putting the viewers into this moment in history. Best movie in seveal years. Congratulations.
Good story. History was well served. Great acting as allways from Daniel. Excellent acting fron Sally. It was nice to see her again on the big screen. Great movie.
First rate movie with historical wonders for those who like American Politics. As is normal with Hollywood, they threw in a scandalous rumor at the end about Thaddeus Stevens to juice things up, but such is Hollywood. What balanced that out was a very nice depiction of the republican party in its infancy fighting the more established Pro-Slavery democratic party. I would have expected Hollywood to moderate that and somehow make the liberals the heroes. But that didn't happen - 5 stars for the good guys!
Pros well paced, great story, great actors

Day Lewis, Fields and Jones created a pregnant insight into the coming of the 13th Amendment and the story gave poignant insight into the private life of Lincoln. A history buff, I never realized the monumental efforts that were threaded to bring freedom to fruition.
I got bogged down in the beginning of this movie. The dialogue is, of course, the English used during the time period. There were moments when I got lost and struggled to keep track of what was going on and who was doing what. The acting by Day-Lewis is superb, however. Around the middle of the movie, I finally caught up and understood everything that was going on. This is strictly a historical picture with a lot of dialogue between politicians. Nonetheless, it is a good flick and a great history lesson.
Pros great actors
Cons too complex
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Very interesting film as a historical re enactment but it's not nearly as powerful as one might expect from the marketing of the film.
Day-Lewis deserves an Oscar, as does Field. A long movie that's not action packed, but it did not drag at all. Very interesting film that apparently is quite close to reality- several items I was unaware of were included like the peace delegation sent by the South.
Must see if you are a US history buff, Civil War buff, film buff!

Outstanding! So happy when a movie lives up to the hype. Great job, Steven Spielberg. Astounding is too mild an adjective to describe Daniel Day-Lewis!
This was a great movie about Lincoln, but don't be deceived if you are expecting another war drama action flick from Steven Spielberg. It is a very heavy dialogue based movie, and is two and a half hours long. It is a movie that will be recognized at the oscars and honestly might be hard to get through for most people. Anyways Daniel-Day Lewis did great as always, as Lincoln and will be nominated for a Best Actor award and possibly win. I thought Steven Spielberg beautifully shot this movie as well, and this movie is a great flick, but you have to recognize who Lincoln was with the movie, and not everyone will be able to watch the whole thing off the bat, but it was a superb movie.
Pros great story, great actors
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Once again Spielberg and company bring us another lesson in filmmaking. The dialog is excellent, the technical direction and costumes flawless. The trouble is that it all hangs on a plot that is just deathly dull. It's no lie, politics IS like making sausage, or in this case, watching paint dry. There's just not enough plot going on here to hold the attention of most viewers. And of course it contains all the patented Spielberg audience manipulation techniques that drive me absolutely batty, punctuated by the ever present victorious group "happy clap" when the bill finally passes Congress. All in all this movie is for someone who doesn't mind spending three hours sorting out characters and listening to dialog. I fear most people will react like my teenage daughters, they'll just sleep through most of it.
Pros great actors, great costumes, great writing
Cons slow
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Slow slow slow! Movie title should have been 13th amendment as to not mislead the audience. Slavery was a sad and horrific part of our history and Hollywood has done another masterful job at keeping it alive. Two and a half hours to tell the story of the vote on the 13th amendment is like watching the grass grow on a hot dry day. The important point is that the 13 amendment to our Constitution was made however I didn't need to waste 9000 seconds of my life watching something that was not advertised.
Pros great actors
Cons slow
No, I do not recommend this movie.
