My Junior Statesmen students wanted to see this movie, so we drove nearly 3 hours to do so. It did not disappoint. There is plenty to consider in this movie. It strikes a cord on both a personal and a public level. Everyone, regardless of political affiliation, should see this movie for its profound message to our leaders, present and future. Unfortunately, there is an entire sector of the population that will not go see this because they are afraid of the message it will give them. Ultimately, the message is of critical importance as we choose any leader.

Outstanding!
So far the movie is following the book quite well -- as far as I remember. I read the book sometime in the 60's or early 70's and I think I will now read it again!
We watched Part 2 the night after it opened and the only complaint I have is not about the movie that is more than excellent, but the fact that the theater was probably less than 10% full. Everybody in the country would benefit from seeing the trilogy and right now I want to know when Part 3 can be expected!
Pros well paced, great story, great actors, relevant

The epic story by Ayn Rand has been turned into an excellent film. It is a true warning for our times. This film does a great job in capturing Rand's ultimate conclusion for a society that chooses to allow their government to have too central of a role in their nations economy. It also shows the struggle of man to resist the excesses of an over-bearing government. Putch has done a great job in updating the scene of this story to modern times with our current technologies, these updates work well in this story. I would recommend this for everyone.

I went with a group - some read the book, some didn't (I did). While Harman Kaslow (producer) said the movie wouldn't follow the book exactly, he did quite a good job of capturing the pertinent parts of the story and making them come alive for today's audience.
The acting is excellent and the sets were quite good - the dystopian society was clearly felt. The story focuses little on the love story, mostly on the effects of progressive government intervention in business and the following adverse effects on society. The message was conveyed clearly and it did pick up the zingers and humor that Rand injected in her original tome.
This is Part II - Kaslow said we wouldn't need to see Part I to understand Part II and I found I agreed.
Ayn Rand said she wrote the book so it wouldn't become reality - you can judge if she got her wish.
Pros well paced, great story, great actors
Yes, I recommend this movie.

It's an incredible challenge to adapt a 1500 page novel that is deeply philosophical across metaphysics, aesthetics, epistemology, economics and much more,. But I do believe the film makers have done a credible job with both of the films, and I found part 2 to have improved production values, script and acting over the first.
The challenge with a trilogy is to make it accessible to those who have not seen the first film, and so after an initial action sequence there is a bit of exposition than sets context and characters. But it is not long before the story is fully rolling.
Some of the emotional components probably could have used slightly more emphasis from actors and director. The plane chase does not quite capture Dagny's "Oh no you don't" determination, and the scene where Hank Rearden gives in and assigns his patent to the government, while played fairly well, could have used a little more emphasis on the critical realization by Rearden of his love for Dagny - a flashback review of their time together and then the "Oh, that", signing away the patents as he returns from his revierie.
Some cast replacements between Part 1 and 2 were good choices, while others still don't make a lot of sense to me. The replacements for Dagny and Lillian Rearden don't really strike me as significant improvements, but the new Hank Rearden is excellent and Franciso's performance is also very good. And the choice of Bader for Quentin Daniels is a surprising gem.
There are also a few gratuitous omissions of key items from the film. Such as where Stadler tells Dagny that she'd probably like Daniels because Daniels wouldn't work for him. Also, Halley's Fourth Concerto is renamed a Rhapsody (it is a lovely piece of music, however).
Overall, the acting and production values are good. The writer and director also do a good job of making the critical philosophical statements work as reasonable representations of their originals while respecting the real life feel that the movie demand
A few scenes were real standouts and gave me some misty eye moments. Intellectual and philosophical courage are displayed and are pretty well set up in terms of the emotional cost.
Worth seeing whether you are an Objectivist or are just curious about a controversial and highly successful work of fiction and philosophy.
Pros well paced, great story, great actors
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Excellent adaption of a mid 20th century novel. I found the dialogue hauntingly pertinent to the past VP debate. Biden begged the voters to trust President Obama and him for four more years because they would have more "stuff" to give out, tax the greedy achievers and continue to structure the economy to determine "fairer" outcomes. He said Romney and Ryan would take all this stuff away. I wish Ryan had used the Hank Reardon trial speech. The movie lays out the case why freedom of the individual to pursue their concept of happiness, the beneficial outcomes of capitalism and the need to resist the "looters" philosophy is vastly superior to the "common good" mantra.

Read the book first. Yes, I know it’s over a thousand pages. I've read it twice and couldn't put it down either time. Here’s why: If you like to think and are not afraid to think, I mean really think, as in ponder, reflect, and suppose, you will enjoy Atlas Shrugged. It is as current as any news headline today.
Atlas Shrugged II is a better movie than the first one because it covers less time and material than the first so it’s more detailed. But none of the movies can never come close to delivering the message in as much detail as the book. If you read the book and then see the movies you’ll enjoy them more because you’ll understand many undercurrents that are only suggested in the movie but described in detail in the book.
But here’s a warning: If you believe that what we have had in America for the past 100+ years is capitalism and that rich people are bad and the workers are the ones who create everything good and that government must control and partner with business otherwise capitalism will get completely out of control and ruin our lives, then you won’t like this movie. It will sting. You also won’t even begin to understand the message. You’ll get a piece of it but if you read the book you’ll understand. And hopefully start asking questions that will, in themselves, begin the necessary process of deprogramming.
Let me give it to you in a nutshell (this is NOT a spoiler so don’t worry): Someone knows how to make something of value to others so that someone produces it. That someone does not produce the item to help others but purely out of the self-interest and ambition to make profits. Others buy the product because it fills a need for them. They don’t buy it because they want to give charity to the one who built it. The money they spend on it flows to the someone who started the company to make a profit. Some of the money flows to the employees who build the product. They work for the company to make money, not because they want to provide charity to the owner of the company—again, in their own self-interest. If the company wants to keep the employees, it will pay a fair wage. Otherwise the workers will go somewhere else to work. (Henry Ford paid better wages than most because he found it was cheaper than training new employees.)
The employees spend their wages on a variety of goods and services provided by a variety of people who started companies and produce those goods and services to make profits. Some of the money paid by customers of our original company for its product flows to producers of the raw materials and supplies that it takes to produce the product. The producers of those raw materials do so to make a profit.
And so it goes. Because of the selfish, greedy, profit motive, everyone gets the things they want and enjoys lives of plenty. Things that people don’t want are not produced. If some raw materials become scarce, the producers of the corresponding products will find other, cheaper raw materials or raise their prices. People will respond as they wish in their own self interest and companies will thrive or fail. No one needs to plan who produces what or how much of it. No one needs to control prices or wages. No one needs to control anything. The market does that precisely because of the self-interest of producers and buyers. (The government is the only consumer.)
The problem, however, is that it's difficult to skim off the top of that system. Politicians like to be able to skim off the top just as thieves and mobsters like to skim off the top. Politicians have developed extremely sophisticated psychological devices to convince the masses that profits are bad so they can skim from those who actually work for a living and produce. Because the Constitution gets in the way of all that skimming, politicians have also been very convincing that the Constitution is old fashioned and not fit for our day.
The founders of this nation feared two things more than most anything else: 1) Career politicians, and, 2) States losing their representation in congress. The powers that be have accomplished both. We popularly elect our Senate and career politicians make up the majority of our government. The result is a gargantuan government of thieves who answer to no one. What happens in Atlas Shrugged is happening to us. That’s the message. Go see it if you dare. I highly recommend that you do. It’s a great movie. Or, just leave your head in the sand and hope for the best. Colbert, Stewart, and O’Reilly will welcome your viewership.
Pros well paced, great story, great actors, stirs thought
