The movie was very accurate, a great representation of the book. I just wish they had made Vronsky be more male-looking.

This movie grabbed me and would not let go. I sensed a bit of Dr. Zhivago with the frigid weather tempered by passionate love and romance. Beautiful piece of work.

Tolstoy's tale of infidelity has been updated in an effort to appeal to younger hipper audiences. It is more choreography and staging than cinema. It is interesting to watch and at times quite beautiful as everyone stops moving until Anna dances past and each couple subsequently begins to dance. But strong visual effects alone do not compensate for the choppy job the director has done with the story itself. Although the acting is fine, the totality of the film misses its mark. I kept feeling that at some point the characters would erupt in song and that this would become a stage musical, but alas even that failed to materialize. Maybe it should have and this might have become another Les Mis. Unfortunately style alone is not enough. The director has made a daring attempt that just misses its mark.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

I LOVE this story, and really disliked this movie. I found the whole theatric setting confusing and unsettling, and found it difficult to skip between two stories. I did, however, love the costumes and consider the cost of the ticket just worth the feast for my eyes. Now, I owe my husband big time for sitting through this!
Cons too complex
No, I do not recommend this movie.

I love how they used the theater effects to pay omage to the theatrical version of this story, but not taking away from the movie itself. Costuming was amazing as you would expect. If you have never seen the play our read the book you may be slightly lost.
Pros great story, great actors, costuming, settings
Cons possibly would have to be familiar with the story
Yes, I recommend this movie.

It was wonderful to see a movie drama with classics without tring to modernize for younger crowds. The effects of the train and snow, really made me feel the cold. The costumes were awesome, presenting the characters well.

The most plastic representation of a great novel ever. Theater art device doesn't work just makes viewers distant from the characters. Actually makes you feel relieved when she jumps under the trail. Audience finally put out of pain.

I never connected with the actors and they left out major pieces of the story. They seemed more concerned with making it an artsy piece rather than telling the story. Don't waste your time.

You need to know that this is not War and Peace or Pride and Prejudice. The director and collaborators chose to make this movie a play sometimes on a stage, sometimes in the wings, sometimes in real rooms. It will fly by and the story is still gripping and told completely. Having chomped through the 976 page novel myself, I appreciated the drama and unique style of the movie and keeping me fully awake and interested.. Some of the casting was chosen to help you feel the kind of person each one was and may not feel like you want it to feel but it will leave you thinking. I cannot imagine that there will not be Academy and Golden Globe awards for this movie. I thought it was thorougly entertaining. It may be too complex for people who are looking for a chick flick.
Pros well paced, great story, great actors
Yes, I recommend this movie.

What a waste - a beautiful saga twisted into a sorry expressionist "arty" film. I would rather watch Dr Zhivago a hundred times than 5 minutes of this movie. I am surprised by the good reviews in the media, maybe they didn't actually see the film. Keira Knightly should not do period films (hated her in Pride and Prejudice too). She is alternately pouty and grinning (like my five year old used to do), her demeanor would suffice for a fashion shoot. Please, Masterpiece Theatre, make a good version of this!
No, I do not recommend this movie.

Anna Karenina remains one of the great tragic stories of all time. This new retelling mixes elements of the stage with classic Hollywood moviemaking. Let me explain. There are many scenes that either start or end on a theater stage, as if to create a limited window into the action or drama that's unfolding. There are even scenes that are highly choreographed where all of the characters are doing routine movements in unison. It works well, for the most part, and elevates the artistry of the scenes. There were moments when I was tired of the gimmick and didn't care for it, but it was well established and added a certain flair that I appreciated overall. Aside from this, it's essentially faithful to the Tolstoy novel and that's not a bad thing at all. Keira Knightley is excellent!
Pros well paced, great story, great actors
Yes, I recommend this movie.
