This movie breaks the bonds of time to tell a story across the lives of many people living in seemingly different worlds. If you do not want an intense complicated movie you shouldn't see it. But if you want a complex inticing story line that makes you think this movie satisfies.

I know I am supposed to be enamored by this movie what with the direction, Tom Hanks and Halle Berry. Well, that got me there, but I wished I had seen ARGO instead. Even though I knew the intention of the movie, it was just so broken up going from past to present or whatever that was that it just didn't connect for me. If I was watching this on tv I would have walked away after 30 minutes, albeit the action finally started half way through the movie and I did like it much better after that.Still not what I was expecting. Sorry but Cloud Atlas did not put me on cloud nine.

Cloud Atlas was an interesting interwoven collection of stories that showcased the superb talents of Tom Hanks and Halle Berry. It was also fun to see Susan Sarandon and Hugh Grant in various roles. The matrix people really showed their influence in this movie (and their actors as well) and the special-effects and make-up were excellent! It is a bit long, but worth every minute! Go see it!

Even after reading the book, this movie was still hard to track. It doesn't follow the same structure as the book; everything is mingled together as it goes back and forth between characters and time periods. If I hadn't read the book, I think I would've been hopelessly lost.

Yes, the story is hard to follow...yes, it's difficult to see the interconnections if they, in fact, exist...yes, your bum will go to sleep unless you are in a luxury recliner clad theater (which we were). BUT...you should see this movie if you love seeing acting at it's best and you appreciate the complexity of large epic movie making. It's not perfect, but time flies figuratively and literally in this film.

The movie requires serious attention to follow the story line during the first 1/3 of the movie. As things begin to come to together, the movie was thought provoking. The make up was great and one of the parts which makes the movie but also draws away from the story is who is who in the make. There are some surprises in the credits at the end so do not miss them.
Overall the movie was good but not excellent. The lenght was long, thank good we went to see it in a super theater with very comfortable seats.

Cloud Atlas is a very complex movie with story upon story happening over a 2 hour and 44 minute time span. There are dozens of characters and they are developed nicely when they are required to be. Costume design is amazing and will not disappoint. Most of the dialogue was easy except for one story line where there was a post apocolyptic dialect of English going on that was a bit difficult to follow at times. Overall the movie is visually appealing and fun to follow. There is a great message to be taken away and I hope you enjoy it.

Too little back story, my patner couldn't understand why things happened because there was no setup. And why did the storyline have to be told in countless flashback/flashforward scenes? The book had the 6 characters stories told twice each. If I had not have read the book I probably would have enjoyed the movie more, but my partner who did not read the book still had too many questions about how things were connected, The significance of later things because the back stories just weren't well enough written.

A stilted attempt to sell some Scifi influenced religion that smacks of Hollywood liberalism and Scientology. The story is insufferably disjointed and the dialogue poorly written. The jerking along of the story line leaves the audience desperately waiting for an event to bring ti all together and make sense of it all. However, this never occurs and the sad final scenes only remind you that you stayed way too long. Even the costuming is a problem as it interferes with recognizing characters that the director somehow forgets is essential to understanding the story. The audience is left gasping for enlightenment as if drowning for lack of air. An epic? No, not close at all.

Alas, there will be varying opinions. Thats what so great about our country. Variety makes up the essence of life. I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. I knew what it was about before I went. I was introduced to reincarnation may years ago and I am a christian. I spent almost 3 years in South East Asia and was very interested in a religion that was so important to millions of people. If it wasn't for Jesus Christ, I would be a follower of reincarnation. There are even hints that this religion was in Jerusalem during the first century A.D. So you can speak against it, thats your right. But the movie was excellent and I didn't mind the 2 hours and 44 min. The actors and actresses were outstanding.

In a word BRILLIANT. Every aspect of this movie was BRILLIANTLY conceived. Really? I had no idea this movie was about karma and reincarnation. If you're into that kind of nonsense, I still don't think you would like this movie. The story moves back and forth between 6 different stories, and gets nauseating after a while. The only moderately entertaining thread is the one involving "Cavendish" (portrayed by Jim Broadbent of Harry Potter fame). At 3 hours, there is way too much going on for too long a time to hold your interest. Several people in the theater got up and left beginning at the 1:39 mark of the movie. I was sure the movie was almost over when they started leaving, but there was almost half the movie remaining when I looked at the time!
The premise of the movie is based on karma, where I thought if you did good things then good things would happen to YOU. Apparently, I was wrong. If you do good in this life, then good will happen to you in your subsequent lives. I am not sure, but there is a strange relationship to the number "6" in the film, and neither me nor my fiance understood it. There were six stories, six reincarnations of each life and the last name of "Sixsmith" in each of the threads. Too many other things to try and figure out to even worry about that meaning.
There was also an amusing aspect in which in the far future, white people live in the jungle/wild and live in tribes, and black people are the advanced race, with Halle Berry arriving to a jungle island to help the desolate white tribal people. I suppose it was supposed to represent a karma thing as well?
To try and make a horribly long story short, even if you believe in karma and reincarnation nonsense, I feel you'd find this movie difficult to enjoy.

For the first hour or so this movie was engrossing. The stories were intertwined, complex and clearly leading up to something good.
Then it got boring. Then next 1-2 hours were plodding and predictable. The several plots lost momentum and would not stand alone even for a short story.
Here was blade runner and warmed over matrix (and more but I would have to be crazy to write all the previous movies that fed this one) and that was pretty much it.
Hugh Grant and Jim Broadbent were great. Tom Hanks tried hard. But all in all it was Matrix 4 and, as we all know, they should have stopped at Matrix 1.

I found it to be very good, provocative movie that had potential to be even better. The storyline as expected weaves around and crosses timelines and characters so it was expected to be a tad hard to follow and it was. It was an unusual movie in that respect but they did a good job of bringing it all together, albeit not a great job. Nevertheless I recommend it. Terrible movie! Very slow, impossible to watch. It bounces all over the place. I kept waiting for it to get better. It never did. Half way through a almost 3 hour movie I couldn't take it any longer and walked out. As did a lot of other people. I have never before walked out of a movie...
Don't waste your money! A frozen pizza and a repeat of Bad Teacher would have been a better night.

The W siblings (The Matrix) do it again with stunning art direction and special effects. However the constant in and out weaving of multiple story lines leaves you expecting a payoff at the end that does not come. Several glaring holes in the screenplay nag at you after leaving the theatre and mar the overall enjoyment. I was definitely engrossed, but would not say that it was on the level of other 3 hours moves like Dances With Wolves, Titanic, or Braveheart. Even their other tour de force The Matrix was shorter (at least movie #1). But I still recommend it.

The movie was disjointed and confusing. Unless you have read the book its based on you will not be able to follow the storyline. The special effects were great. A few subplots were interesting. Overall it was too long and a terrible movie. I was bored by 30 minutes in.

I thought the movie was great but I read the book so I knew all of the six stories. The book progressed through each story but te movie went back and forth between each story so many times I am sure it would be so confusing if you didn't know all the characters and stories ahead of time. I loved seeing the book come to life but everyone else was completely confused.

Cloud Atlas was mesmerizing, great story telling, and full of special effects. The message from Cloud Atlas was clear about the battle between good and evil, truth and deceit, love and hate, courage and fear, that exist in our world. Everything we do in our lives affects everyone around us.

I have to say, it was one of the most confusing, disjointed movies I have ever seen. I had no idea it was almost 3 hours long (45 minutes longer than needed) so the severe pain I was in didn't help at all, but other than the make-up (which WILL win an academy award) I have to say "STAY AWAY" there were a few good scenes but in total, I was extremely disappointed.

I saw this movie with limited knowledge about the story line. It was incredible, and presented the whole meaning of human existence, connection across time, and varying reasons for existence in a very personal way. Tom Hanks was incredible in his many roles throughout the movie. The struggles of life, love, and relationships intertwined with unique stories across time were interesting and shows how we are still connected to the past and the future.
This is a movie that means what you want it to mean. It is excellent and a must see.

Cloud Atlas is a staggering masterpiece, a positively inspired piece of filmmaking that blows the lid off cinematic convention and uses unparalleled artistry to tell a story that encompasses the whole of human experience. Exciting, exhausting and energizing, a brazen film that leaves somber cinema seeming too passive for its own good. This is a movie as big as life itself. A must see.
