Cloud Atlas is an incredible achievement of film making destined to become a classic of the same caliber as Citizen Kane, Blade Runner and Harold and Maude. Like Cloud Atlas, those films were well received with some negative reviews and did just okay at the box office. It was only years later that people realized what truly amazing works of art they were. This is one of those movies.
Cloud Atlas was based on a wonderful, but extremely complicated, book with multiple plot lines in different time periods -- Past, Present, and a thousand years in the future. Andy and Lana Wachowski took this nearly impossible to film book and MADE IT BETTER.
Most movies based on great books end up being disappointing reflections of the novel. This is NOT one them. It delivers the power and the emotion of the book so faithfully that, in some ways, you're better off not having read the book because the surprises will have much more impact.
The book even had some unresolved story lines which the film makers resolved in incredibly smart and satisfying ways, making the movie better than the book in some ways.
I am so glad I saw Cloud Atlas in a theater. My one quibble was I wish they had cast someone like Ewan McGregor instead of Tom Hanks (He's serviceable; I'm never moved by him) but, other than that, what a truly amazing film.
It was so beautifully shot that regretted not catching it in Imax. If they ever re-release it that format I'm there.
Oh and did I mention that Cloud Atlas is also a sci fi movie? But to label it that does it a disservice because, while it is a great sci fi film, it is also much, much more.
This is one of those movies that will be part of major film retrospective for decades to come.
Pros well paced, great story, great actors, a sci fi classic
I have read several reviews of this movie and I can understand where some dislikes are in order. First of all, when people hear the Wachowski SIBLINGS, they immeidtaely think Matrix or V for Vendetta. While those are great movies in their own right, this movie is nowhere near the stature of those two movies. I found the start to be well-paced and evenly distributing scenes from different eras. However, as the movie went along, there could be a scene that would last 15 seconds and then bounce you to another scene. The whole movie does tie together. The message is really good. But the story lacks the punch needed to get the point across. Tom Hanks and Halle Berry do great jobs in their acting. The movie is a bit long for what it is. They could have easily gotten away with 2 hours. The makeup is tremendous and should get a few nods for awards. 4 stories in one and all of them tie together well. Wachowski siblings need to get back to their basics and do Matrix style movies. They just do not have the punch to pull movies like this off. If I am giving an honest opinion...this movie should be passed on.
Pros great actors, great visuals
Cons too complex for some viewers to tolerate, shortened scenes cant grab your attention
“Cloud Atlas” is jaw-droppingly, awe-inspiringly, eye-poppingly stunning in every way. I could leave it at that, for no review, article, essay or book could do a description of this movie justice (except, of course, for David Mitchell’s original novel upon which the film is based. But even then, only maybe). What directors Tom Tykwer, Andy Wachowski, and Lana Wachowski have accomplished here is a film that is felt deeply, a film that is an experience through everything that makes us human, the good and the bad. Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Jim Broadbent, Hugo Weaving, Jim Sturgess, Hugh Grant, and many more play multiple roles across many ages of time. Their characters’ actions cause ripples in the pond of endless existence. A curious birthmark, a common theme, and an unstoppable force of masterful pacing are all that seem to connect their stories at first glance. But the magic the filmmakers have accomplished occurs on deeper levels, within us, the audience. “Cloud Atlas” adds to you. It becomes a part of you. Let the film wash over you and inspire you to greatness. Who knows how your actions of today could affect someone generations from now. This film boldly visualizes that notion in an Oscar-worthy tale that is among the year’s best. See it! Because if ever a film could boast that it “has it all”, it is “Cloud Atlas”.

Let it wash over you...don't think - even for one second - that you will figure this movie out. Or you are a goner. Just suspend your thinking and let the emotions ride... .kind of like what America did on election day!

I have an affinity for the "thought provoking". This film, with it's campy comedic interludes and Memento chronology, lost my connection to it's message more than once. Can't be sure if it was the screenplay, directing, or adaptation. Tom Hanks' talent as an actor has garnered him much success with lesser content in the past. This one will not be one of his memorable ones. It reminds me of a "B" movie at a Drive-In Theatre. Some times a good actor just chooses the wrong script. I saw Cloud Atlas as a painting with poor composition and excess content.
Pros great actors, great filming
Cons too complex, incohesive
No, I do not recommend this movie.

Again, WOW. I sat that motionless for most of the movie. It is like watching 5 movies in one. People that love intellectually-inspired movies that requires "thinking" would like this as it is a very deep movie with a COMPLEX storyline. The other type of people that are not into deep movies or anything that requires the use of their brain, will not like this movie. Overall, Tom Hanks gave a great performance. I also liked Halle Berry in this, as well as the other actors too. I will definitely be purchasing this movie eventually because it really needs to be seen again!
I was all prepared to dislike this movie, and be annoyed at spending almost 3 hours in one seat. Strangely, I enjoyed it thoroughly and was surprised when it ended. Never read the book, but just from the movie this seemed less complicated and less mysterious than I had thought. Everything about it was well-done, including the little funny-talk that Hanks and Halle slipped into for the unimportant parts of the film. Between the time shifts, the make-up shifts, the multiple parts, this movie was like a cat toy, energetically entertaining.
This movie breaks the bonds of time to tell a story across the lives of many people living in seemingly different worlds. If you do not want an intense complicated movie you shouldn't see it. But if you want a complex inticing story line that makes you think this movie satisfies.
Pros well paced, great story, great actors
Yes, I recommend this movie.

I know I am supposed to be enamored by this movie what with the direction, Tom Hanks and Halle Berry. Well, that got me there, but I wished I had seen ARGO instead. Even though I knew the intention of the movie, it was just so broken up going from past to present or whatever that was that it just didn't connect for me. If I was watching this on tv I would have walked away after 30 minutes, albeit the action finally started half way through the movie and I did like it much better after that.Still not what I was expecting. Sorry but Cloud Atlas did not put me on cloud nine.
Cons too complex, slow in the beginning, some parts not quite believeable

Cloud Atlas was an interesting interwoven collection of stories that showcased the superb talents of Tom Hanks and Halle Berry. It was also fun to see Susan Sarandon and Hugh Grant in various roles. The matrix people really showed their influence in this movie (and their actors as well) and the special-effects and make-up were excellent! It is a bit long, but worth every minute! Go see it!

Even after reading the book, this movie was still hard to track. It doesn't follow the same structure as the book; everything is mingled together as it goes back and forth between characters and time periods. If I hadn't read the book, I think I would've been hopelessly lost.
Pros great actors
Cons too complex
No, I do not recommend this movie.

See it for the acting and visuals even if it is confusing
Yes, the story is hard to follow...yes, it's difficult to see the interconnections if they, in fact, exist...yes, your bum will go to sleep unless you are in a luxury recliner clad theater (which we were). BUT...you should see this movie if you love seeing acting at it's best and you appreciate the complexity of large epic movie making. It's not perfect, but time flies figuratively and literally in this film.
Pros great actors
Yes, I recommend this movie.

The movie requires serious attention to follow the story line during the first 1/3 of the movie. As things begin to come to together, the movie was thought provoking. The make up was great and one of the parts which makes the movie but also draws away from the story is who is who in the make. There are some surprises in the credits at the end so do not miss them.
Overall the movie was good but not excellent. The lenght was long, thank good we went to see it in a super theater with very comfortable seats.

Cloud Atlas is a very complex movie with story upon story happening over a 2 hour and 44 minute time span. There are dozens of characters and they are developed nicely when they are required to be. Costume design is amazing and will not disappoint. Most of the dialogue was easy except for one story line where there was a post apocolyptic dialect of English going on that was a bit difficult to follow at times. Overall the movie is visually appealing and fun to follow. There is a great message to be taken away and I hope you enjoy it.
Too little back story, my patner couldn't understand why things happened because there was no setup. And why did the storyline have to be told in countless flashback/flashforward scenes? The book had the 6 characters stories told twice each. If I had not have read the book I probably would have enjoyed the movie more, but my partner who did not read the book still had too many questions about how things were connected, The significance of later things because the back stories just weren't well enough written.
Pros great actors, locations, cinematography
Cons too complex, slow
Yes, I recommend this movie.

This movie keeps on going and going and going with no end in sight. Was really bored. Would have left early have I not have paid for Imax.
A stilted attempt to sell some Scifi influenced religion that smacks of Hollywood liberalism and Scientology. The story is insufferably disjointed and the dialogue poorly written. The jerking along of the story line leaves the audience desperately waiting for an event to bring ti all together and make sense of it all. However, this never occurs and the sad final scenes only remind you that you stayed way too long. Even the costuming is a problem as it interferes with recognizing characters that the director somehow forgets is essential to understanding the story. The audience is left gasping for enlightenment as if drowning for lack of air. An epic? No, not close at all.
Pros theoretically good actors
Cons bad acting, too complex, slow, poorly directed, offensively bad overall
Alas, there will be varying opinions. Thats what so great about our country. Variety makes up the essence of life. I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. I knew what it was about before I went. I was introduced to reincarnation may years ago and I am a christian. I spent almost 3 years in South East Asia and was very interested in a religion that was so important to millions of people. If it wasn't for Jesus Christ, I would be a follower of reincarnation. There are even hints that this religion was in Jerusalem during the first century A.D. So you can speak against it, thats your right. But the movie was excellent and I didn't mind the 2 hours and 44 min. The actors and actresses were outstanding.
