OMG. This was like watching a grade school play with a splash of color. I was so tortured in watching this, it made the thirty or forty minutes I stayed feel like I was shackled to the seat and made to watch hours of my neighbors trip videos. Maybe the ending was worth the torture for some, but a good movie has you at hello. I kept wondering if someone was playing a trick on me. The cast of The Wizard of Oz will roll over in their graves. Scenes were not cohesive, acting was like a school play, scenery had no meaning to the story, the special effects were great in the tornado, but at least have the star coming out of it all like he had been through one instead of like he just had a bath. I want my money back and should get it. If this boosts anyone's career, someone whack me upside the head cause surely I must be unconscious! Oh, I forgot, I did rather like one thing…the popcorn.
Cons bad acting, like a grade school play, no story setup, characters not cohesive or thought out

Great effects alone make this one worth watching. Almost everyone is familiar with Oz and the idea that the wizard there is just a charlatan with believers. This movie enforces that theme in a somewhat fun way, with awesome visualizations and set work. I see these same actors in all too many movies together though. They should expand and act with other, better actors, so they can learn.

Taking on the backstory of one of the most beloved films of all time was so daunting that it's taken more than half a century to reach theaters. So I give the filmmaker and studio points for courage. The script is also smart and earnest enough to set the stage for Dorothy's past/future visit so I give it points for brains as well. But, as you surmised, what the film lacks most is heart. The reason this film was made 54 years later, the reason the original remains the immortal classic it will always be, is because it had SO much heart and so much soul - for an all white cast that is (note: points are also given for the first black Munchkins!). Such Great character actors and such Powerful imagery and memorable music. Why didn't MGM attempt this film? Probably because they didn't want to be the ones to tarnish their own legacy. Who better than to step up than Disney? Yet why on earth or Oz did they cast the powerfully mediocre James Franco. I'm convinced James Franco has an angel, or maybe a Wizard of an agent in Hollywood, because I've yet to see him show anything that would elevate him beyond character actor at best much less the starring role in a project like this. The Wizard in this film needed inexhaustible charm and charisma. Franco has none and reads his lines like they're filming rehearsals. Was there really no one better to carry this film than him? (Leonardo?) If ever a Wizard a wiz there was, it ain't Franco. Beyond that, the film, like the hot air balloon that carries him to Oz, manages to soar despite his dead weight. Just not high enough to see the original Emerald City. But still - worth the trip.

I really enjoyed this movie as a fan of The Wizard of Oz and the play Wicked. It was really fun watching in 3-D too. I was really more interested in learning more about the witches' backgrounds. Loved the look of the movie. The supporting characters are great as well. Slow to start, but then the story picked up, Looking forward to the sequel!
