The movie has marvelous effects and ties in fabulously with the original. I found that it gets a little slow in the middle but then picks up. Overall we loves it

We waited with anticipation for the release of this film and finally got to see it yesterday. It was horrible. Casting was bad, acting was plastic and stilted, special effects were silly and unimaginative. The dialogue was beyond ridiculous. I have no idea what they were thinking when they made this movie, but I can't imagine anyone over the age of 10 sitting through it. Very disappointing! Save your money!!

Oz tells the story of how the Wizard ended up in the Emerald City along with how the Wicked Witch became wicked. Despite some slow moving dialogue in the middle, both my date and I enjoyed this movie very much. I wasn't sure if the movie was really going to tie itself in with the original, however the last 40 minutes really did that and made it all worthwhile! The special effects and 3D were very pleasing to the senses. A must see!

After having the manager correct a partially blocked underlit projection, I settled in to a curious rendering of the Frank Baum tale. Sense of foreboding was preserved thru softly lit backgrounds . Overall storytelling amounted to a contest of wills between three female leads and no one really was exceptional. Dialogue was adult ,visual childlike film noir. Result was a rather dark vision lacking wonder and awe.

I took my 13 and 10 year old grandsons to this movie and we all three loved it. It was just a great movie for them and for me, it was a wonderful extension to the original Wizard of Oz. I loved the story line and the 3D effects in parts of the movie were some of the best I've seen. A movie that I wouldn't mind going to again...and I just might do that!

When I saw the trailer for this film I knew I just had to see it....and I definitely was not disappointed! My husband and I saw the 3-D version Oz the Great and Powerful this afternoon and left with smiles on our faces. The special effects were absolutely outstanding, the dialog and story were extremely well written and drew us in right from the beginning, and all of the actors were top-notch and did an exceptionally wonderful job! We were engrossed in the story from beginning to end by a storyline that definitely did the original firm justice; this movie kept our attention with a great storyline, wondering directing, and absolutely amazing effects and cinematography. I cannot wait until this film comes out on DVD! This is absolutely a MUST SEE for any and all Wizard of Oz fans. Absolutely wonderful!!!!!

I had a great time and really enjoyed this movie. I saw it in 3-D and there were true 3-D effects to satisfy the eye. The storyline explained most of the pre-Dorothy and Wizard of Oz movie. The only thing missing was how did the main characters from the Wizard of Oz wind up as they were found. Other than that, it flowed well.

As others who have reviewed "OZ" have said, it rings so true as to how the wizard ended up in OZ, and why he hides behind the curtain and how the wicked witch came to unleash her vengeance on the people and on "Glinda the Good"! Such a great prequel to the original. I do think there could have been a better choice for "Oz" himself than James Franco. I look forward to seeing this again and again with my grand children. Real powers or magic....it never really mattered in the end. It was simply "because of the wonderful things he does!"

Went to this movie with my 28 year old daughter. We are both fans of The Wizard of Oz and went in knowing this was a prequel to the story. We both loved it. The special effects were fantastic and loved the 3D.

Overall I felt this was an excellent movie. It felt very true to the original Wizard of Oz in style, but with updated graphics and special effects on par with Avatar. The scenes were vibrant, the colors rich, and the acting well-done.
The only negative is that the opening intro (all in black and white) seemed a bit long. Although, to be fair, I'm not certain how it could have been condensed, just that that part felt a bit slow and tedious. The rest of the movie was amazing and a must-see for Oz fans everywhere.

This was a good movie. It attempts to explain some things in the original movie (i.e., how the wicked witch came to be) and does a good job of it. I'm glad they decided to do a prequel rather than attempt an updated version of the classic.

Lets just begin with, I liked it. This is not a musical like the classic film. Its a prequel that ties nicely into it using the wizardry of technology and carnival magic. Although quite different, the story line seeks out parallels that make the journey familiar and satisfying.
For those who want this to be more like the old film with Dorothy Gale, its not. No ruby slippers or musical production numbers. But remember when the original film came out, it bombed. It was ridiculed. So, before you go negative, give it some time. There's plenty here to come to appreciate. The special effects are excellent. The new characters like the China Girl and the monkey Finley are fine additions. The use of black and white in the beginning and color in Oz as an homage to the original film are simply perfect. Sam Raimi's directing and timing are spot on.
Even if you are not blown away on your first viewing, this film is clearly destined to become a classic. Don't worry, you'll get to see it every year when it hits cable especially around the holidays. And one day, you'll be sitting with the family talking about how it grew on you.
This is probably one of the best family films in years. Sure, there are things that didn't quite resonate with me on the first viewing, but I'll just bet a few years down the road, I'll be looking forward to seeing it again and again. Why? Because of the wonderful things he does!

My Title makes it sound like I am bashing the acting but I'm not the acting was good and the performances of the voice actors was superb it just paled in comparison to the massive scale and artistry of the special effects. The sets were magnificent and the characters beautifully modeled. A great Family movie that will reintroduce this generation with the land and characters of Oz.

First of all, if you wanna escape and just bask in gorgeous 3d visuals with a great story , this is it!!! It will mesmerize you in its world just like Alice & Wonderland!!! The actors are a lot of fun too!!! James Franco, Mila Kunis, Michelle Williams and Rachel Weisz are on point in there characters and it also has a few unexpected surprises!!! See it!!! You wont regret it!!!

I saw this movie in 3D and it was well worth the money. I had expected a little more action and there was a little too much dialogue, but it definitely had my daughter's attention from beginning to end. She actually stood up for the entire movie afterwards askig me what my favorite parts were. The special effects and colors were great. The only question I was left wondering about were the ruby slippers that seemed to be such a big focus in the original movie???? Great story line to the how the wizard arrived at oz.

Although the story was intriguing, Mila Kunis' acting skills brought the whole movie down. Also, there weren't enough 3D effects to warrant the extra money. I'd wait until it comes out on DVD.

I have always loved everything Wizard of Oz. I found the beginning a little slow going but the kids didn't seem to get restless. I thought the kids might be a little scared of the monkeys but I heard no complaints. I love that it wasn't a remake of the original. I enjoyed it very much and definately recommend seeing it.
