"Aquí y Allá" won one of the top prizes at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival for very good reason. It tells the story of an immigrant homecoming and the reunion with his young family in a small mountain village in Guerrero, Mexico after years of working in the US. Pedro has also finally earned the opportunity to follow his dream of starting a band, the Copa Kings.
The film shows the delicate rebuilding of trust and intimacy between the family. The love that comes to bind them is rendered memorably in charming casual moments -- the purity of which shows what the family has regained, and what is really at stake of being lost again in the family's hopes of staying together. In its own poetic way, the film succeeds in the difficult task of expressing the powerful emotions that lie just below the surface. And in treating its specific characters with remarkable dignity and humanity, the film cannot help but illuminate the human level of the bigger picture -- of families everywhere who are separated by forces out of their control.
