Director Lee Daniels (Precious) likes stories about the dark underbelly of society and this one even pushes his limits. Its sexuality is extreme and deals with racism and homophobia so be warned. Yet it gives a fine cast of actors a chance to sink their teeth into stretch roles unlike anything they have ever done before. Zach Efron is the central character who comes of age in both the story and his own acting roles. His brother (Matthew McConaughey) is a journalist with a black British writing partner (David Oyelowo) who is confronted with small town racism at every juncture. Macy Gray is the maid in his home who also acts as narrator holding this lurid story together.
The film seems to touch almost every taboo one might associate with a murderer on death row (John Cusack) who makes his living by skinning gators in the swamp and the crusading newspaper men who want to vindicate him. Nicole Kidman plays the sexually overcharged trailer trash woman pen pal who want to marry this murderer but is also the object of Efron's affection. The twists and turns are endless and to say the plot thickens is an understatement.
If you've seen Precious, you understand how Daniels directs. In comparison to this, that was a mild film, so be prepared. Its bloody, its sordid, and its full of sadness.

I realy enjoyed this movie - such complex characters, and extraordinary performances from the whole cast. I expected something more "Pulp Fiction" but found myself touched by the sad coming of age story that drives it. Disturbing? Yes, Moving? Surprisingly yes. It held me the whole time and I recommend it. Zac Efron has grown up and holds the movies as it's anchor.

I read the terrible reviews from critics beforehand, which made me what to see it the mess for myself. I loved every minute of it! It's not for everyone, few people walked out, but I couldn't keep my eyes off the screen. Nicole Kidman was hea-ven!

I went to see this as a distraction from what had become a bad day. It was completely perfect as the story was one I could dive into and forget about everything else. Nicole Kidman in a role that will shock you!

The story if not based on true events it's very credible. I enjoyed it till the last minute. I like to see Mathew McConaughey in more mature roles like this one where he becomes the character he is portraying. Also Anita, the narrator, makes the story more enjoyable, since she adds some humour to this drama.

I enjoyed all the dirty little secrets and flawed characters that drive the plot of this seedy Florida swamp thriller. The story is simple. Two investigative reporters form Miami go to a small town near a swamp to investigate the sentencing of a man who may have been unjustly accused of murder. The cast of this film is first rate and they all play their challenging roles very well. Unfortunately, the whole of this film isn’t as good as some of the character development that it carries off so well. Efron and Kidman’s characters, for example, are well developed and solidly performed. I would recommend this movie to people who like soaps and daytime drama series; it’s also good for fans of the performers because most of them do a good job. However, there are too many complex issues that come into the story without developing into anything that it’s frustrating at times.
