During the intermision I said to my friend, "For the life of me, I have no clue as to what they are talking about." There was no element of the opera that came near anything that I have seen or heard before in an opera production. Nothing.
But wait, I'm glad The Met is investing its resourcces in operas such as The Tempest, because there are people who actually understand the music and enjoy this sort of stuff. It's important that the Met thinks outside the box and is willing to take risks, and they need to keep doing it.
I must admit that I'd had enough when I left at the intermission.
OperaBuffinNH
Pros i have none., i could leave at intermission.
Cons too complex, not my taste in opera
No, I do not recommend this movie.

It seems that the composer and librettist did not connect with the content of The Tempest. They even admit it in their pre-recorded interview. The music is non-melodic chaos. That may work in the beginning of the opera to depict the storm at sea, but, not throughout the first 2 Acts. I don't know if that style was continued in the 3rd Act because my friend and I had had enough by intermission and left.
Pros great story, great costumes
Cons bad chaotic music with no descernible melody
No, I do not recommend this movie.

This version of The Tempest was wonderfully constructed - the costumes, set, and orchestra were at their finest. I particularly liked Meredith Oakes' libretto, and the singing was completely beautiful. Simon Keenlyside was at his finest, and I also loved Miranda and Ferdinand. Caliban threw himself into the part with aplomb, also.
I can't recommend it because I found the music inaccessible. There's new music, and then there's New Music, and I found all the atonal material tiring to listen to. If you're a fan of atonal music and performance art, you will love this piece. It was extremely well done, it just wasn't for me.
Pros great singing, great costumes, great orchestra
No, I do not recommend this movie.

This is a modern opera on the Sharkespear play "The Tempest." The music is modern, off the wall, and not what I would recommend for the neophyte opera-goer. I found everything to be 5 star. The music, however, will take some getting used to, but, honestly it grows on you. But don't send someone to go see it unless you go with them to help them understand and appreciate it.
Pros well paced, great story, great actors, avant guard
Cons really off the wall weird music
Yes, I recommend this movie.

As an opera and Shakespeare lover, I found this too atonal as I stretched for familiar Shakespearean language. The production is beautifully produced: voices/costumes/acting wonderful, but it's one I will not recommend. Initially I thought it was a Cirque du Soleil production.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

Spiderman, Peter Pan, Lady Gaga & Cirque de Soleil have nothing on the spell-binding magic of this mixed-media event. Movie meets meets musical theater meets modern dance, with stunt doubles & special effects, 4-story morphing sets, good-looking, compelling actors and a dream-like score that never accompanies but instead interacts w/ the words, which are a contemporary take on Shakespeare's story. The music undulates, then sharply spikes & plummets like the ship and the sea,'tempestually'. The experience is really "Movie" interspersed w/ "Reality TV" during the backstage intermission segments. Hate, or have never seen an opera, but enjoy Broadway musicals? Know nothing about classical music or care to, but like different theatrical experiences? If so, try "The Tempest" or one of the other Met Opera HD broadcasts in a movie theater. Jeans and popcorn, 3 hours of something new and fun: great entertainment.
Pros well paced, great story, great actors
Yes, I recommend this movie.
