HORRIBLE...no plot, nothing to hang on to or follow; just unnecessary graphic nudity, sex and language. Great performances but even that couldn't keep people from leaving the theatre. Dark, depressing and disturbing with no foundation to say "it was worth it."

Very uninteresting film about a cult that had nothing behind its mission. If that was the point, then it was made. I would hope any filmmaker worth his salt, and one with an impeccable resume to date, would not have made such a film, but all the greats have a failure or three on their resume. Acting was great, even though Phoenix had many lines that were close to unintelligible because of his bizarre speech pattern. Music was close to annoying at times. I have to add for a two and a half hour film, the pacing was fine even though the story was fairly dull. I guess Anderson deserves props for that.

Closeups are the story within this movie. At times it seemed to be a story seeking a sequel or an option as a television mini series.
The two plot lines that revealed themselves were what is the interior of our minds composed of, and can our minds be controlled and order and conformity imposed. Secondly, what are the consequence of thinking and proselytizing this philosophy and regimen?
Neither question has the time to be explored fully and both wind up being shortchanged.

I had read terrific reviews of this movie. The acting was terrific but the story was slow and I did not like nor care about any of the characters. We actually left after 2 hours and 15 minutes because we just did not care what happened and did not want to waste any more time on this movie.

Despite having some questions after walking out of the film, Paul Thomas Anderson once again has managed to create a striking cinematic work. His use of the camera and the way he frames each shot manages to capture the essence of the characters being portrayed onscreen. For those looking for a lot of action or a cheery film, this is not the one for you. However, if you are willing to let your mind work and become enraptured, this will be worth it.

I was told it would be boring, but I didn't realize when it was over, that I sat there for over 2 hours.
I was also told it was loosely based on Hubbard and the Church of Scientology. I didn't connect that theory.
I did find it interesting the cult had to flee to Britain to escape religious persecution.

Unclear why this story needed to be told. Hoffman and Phoenix chew the scenery (which scenery is admittedly wonderful) but none in my party saw a point to the story. The characters are all unlikeable, so what they do, or why, becomes of no interest. Almost walked out, but kept hoping something would happen to tie the numerous floating ideas into a story. It never did. Amy Adams plays the Eva Braun behind the Master's throne...SHE was scary, but miscast. Cinematography was terrific, but In sum, a waste of time and money,

"The Master" is a character study of a character study of a charismatic leader (Philip Seymour Hoffmann) and a troubled follower (Joaquin Phoenix). Amy Adams is Hoffmann's wife and contributes her share of the fine acting which is the strength of this weird, weird movie. It is overly long, and the pace is too slow. But the quality of the acting, particularly by Phoenix, makes it worth watching.
This is not a fast-paced action movie. If that's what you want, go see something else. But for an intriguing tale of the interaction of some very unusual people, try this one. It's worth sitting through.

Never so disappointed in a film. Obviously I saw a totally different film from what others hailed as brilliant and Oscar worthy. Every attempt was made to revive the extremely boring pace with gratuitous masturbation, sex, and just plain gross nudity. Full frontal nudity of grandma screams desperation and not creative genius. I definitely not a prude, but was embarrassed to be in attendance and to have paid to see this awful attempt at film.

Since I love both leading actors and our local reviewer gave it 5 stars, I went to see it, and I only think I stayed just to see if it would ever engage me--it didn't. It was slow and the characters in the movie were totally unlikable and weird. I love independent films, but this one is truly not for the masses. I'm sure it will get all sorts of Academy Award nominations, but I sure hope it doesn't win any.

Excellent movie- superb acting! This movie is not for everyone. It takes time to understand what is going on-- and there's a certain amount of "figuring out" what the movie was about after one has seen it. The movie does spark discussion. To me, it involved, in the main, two people, one of whom was crazier than the other and the interdependence between a fairly clever but crazy con man and a sociopath beyond redemption. It's an intriguing two and a half hours of a film that I would recommend to a selective group of people.

moviegoers not fans of indie or art house flicks will rate this film a 2 or 3. that said, all of the performances were stellar...spot on. the character development was slow, but complete for the most part. the plot, however, drags on and on and on. you have to commit to these performances, not because of the acting, but because the story progresses so slowly. if you can bear to wait out the narrative and it's lack of a definitive climax, it will be some of the most enjoyable acting you've seen in a while. i loved it, but i have a feeling i will have little company...

The only saving grace to this movie was Joaquin Phoenix and PSH, some of the lines were extremely cheesy, although I'm sure the Academy will think they were magnificent.

Although this movie won't offend those in "the cause" as much as you might have thought, it is a slow-paced, well-acted portrayal of a charismatic, opportunistic, slightly paranoid cult leader and how he takes advantage of and, sometimes cruelly manipulates a new member of his flock. Well worth seeing in my opinion.

It was a good movie.
That said, I HATED the people: the f**k-up Freddie AND the magnetic, evil Seymour who is the leader of the cult, the rules of which he makes up as he goes along.
Freddie is a damaged drunk whose anger and hate are right on the surface. He rages, fights and destroys. With one exception* he shows no human feelings. Sex is an urgent animal drive, nothing close to loving or tender. He has no moral compass; a purpose would be a foreign incomprehensible notion.
Seymour is a charmer, manipulator and user. People willingly give him power over themselves and he takes full advantage. His distain for others is just under the surface. Any challenge to his complete control and it emerges, violent and vulgar. His magnified anger is like Freddie’s.
Seymour chooses Fred as his project, mind-f**king him until in the end he is an empty shell, parroting the words of the master to the woman he is having sex with.
Not much left of the Freddie we saw two hours ago. This is how cults continue. Members reproduce the evil he's done.
Motivation? Seymour sees himself above everyone else and has the right (maybe he sees it as a duty) to control people. Maybe even though they are inferior, he needs them to feed his ego, he needs their worship.
Freddie has no purpose in life, isn't even aware of his gaping holes. No one has ever cared about him so he doesn't know about love. He experiences Seymour taking an" interest " (the closest anyone has been to loving him). He's curious, no more.
*an old girlfriend. He shows some vulnerability when it comes to her.

This is intentionally not an easy film to sit through. It's principally the story of two men, one in total control of his life and the other in a constant state of confusion and inner struggle. The so-called master is played perfectly by Hoffman. He's the type of man who honestly believes he has figured out life and human behavior and takes up the cause of sharing the knowledge. His polar opposite, Quell, is played to the hilt by Joaquin Phoenix. These two men form a strange, and dependent, relationship that's often painfully destructive. At the end, they can't continue to be together because they're constantly at odd. Their connection, however, is undeniable and parting is incredibly painful for both. I recommend this movie as a suspenseful and highly dramatic human comedy, not unlike this director's previous work "There Will Be Blood." Just know that it's not a light-hearted film to sit through and you will have to sit there and think about the pieces being presented to you.
