The movie was is a disjointed patchwork quilt of various well-acted scenes that did not provide comfort. I understand the premise is of one man's beguiling dominance and control over others who are mentally weaker, but I left the theater wondering if I should have saved money and waited until it was available on DVD.
I was excited that Joaquin had returned to movies (my motivation to see this movie); and if he deliberately wanted to look like Calibos from the 1981 version of "Clash of the Titans" he did an excellent job - very hard, rough.
Amy Adams is outstanding as Hoffman's wife, and a great contrast to his character.
The ending scene is interesting - mocking or mimicking.
I am recommending this movie to not dissuade people interested in the movie to avoid it; but that they should see it and make their own opinions.

Tangles you in its struggle to reign in the dragon within. You will side with each character at every turn and twist. You'll gain faith, you'll lose faith, you'll become insecure, you'll become empowered. The Master with alternate between your wise uncle and your charlatan in-law, and you'll want to get on a motor cycle and leave all of them behind. Have to see it again just to calm my nerves.

The story of this movie moves in a kind of bell curve, giving you the sense that it's building up to something and then rolling over into nothing much, leaving behind (in it's wake, so to speak) a jumble of interpretations. But the acting! Phoenix is amazing, I guess playing crazy is easier if you know what you're doing. Puts all the hammy portrayals of the disadvantaged to shame, which is most of them. Riveting. Hoffman, good, as always. You wind up watching this movie just to see the acting. The ending is just where it ends.

This slow plodding movie features excellent acting by both Hoffman and Phoenix. The characters are not particularly likeable and towards the end, I was cheering for the end rather than any particular resolution. The costumes and sets were very well done for a circa 1950 film. The music/score was annoying and grating at times.

Needs a new script. Was too repetitive. Characters were not to be admired or enjoyable to watch. Story went nowhere and was pointless.
On the bottom of my list of great or good movies. Maybe engaging in a few scenes but otherwise boring but then my back was hurting, maybe because of the movie.

It will be an historic movie when folks really figure out what it is all about - and how it relates to its base of inspiration - Scientology.
The acting is magnificent. It will hold your attention and give you a glimpse into HOW someone can lock themselves into a belief system that disempowers them while creating an illusion of empowerment.
IMDB gives it an 8.1 out of 10. Much more accurate than the skewed vote here of 2.5 of 5. Why do I call the results for "The Master" skewed on movietickets? The 1's here on this review site are by Scientologists. A common tactic on Amazon for anti-$cientology books. You see - they don't like this movie because it may turn eyes in their direction. They fear that. You see - the "technology" of the Master does NOT stand up to scrutiny.

Ok, I have to agree with the rest of the sane people that reviewed this movie and didn't understand it. I too, was looking forward to it because I'm a big Joaquin Phoenix fan and it looked interesting. Joaquin is the only positive thing in this movie. He obviously lost weight to play the role of a down-and-out alcoholic who can't do the right thing in life. He transformed himself into someone 20 years older and I thought it was amazing. However, the good stops right there. The movie was slow, confusing, and doesn't really get into the workings, teachings and beliefs of the group. It's more about Joaquin's character fighting with his inner demons. Philip Seymour Hoffman was good as usual, but don't waste your time on this one, folks.

A man must serve a master, or a higher calling, in order to have peace and purpose. That seems to be the message of Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest film, anyways. And while the message doesn’t seem clear until the very end, there is plenty of cinematic gold to keep your mind ticking through its more than two hours of running time. “The Master” tells not so much a plotted tale, rather it presents us with two men who are both struggling in one way or another with the concept of something more than themselves, something bigger than their own lives. Joaquin Phoenix plays Freddie Quell, a sailor who at the end of WWII is more lost than ever, and whose taste for alcohol, even in toxic forms, grows more every day. He stumbles into Lancaster Dodd, played by Philip Seymour Hoffman, a man whose life is devoted to The Cause, based on a book he wrote that purports to “awaken” humans unto their past and future lives, thus fully unlocking their potential. For some, like the volatile Freddie, it’s a welcome avenue of purpose and belonging. For others, even Dodd’s own son, it reeks of cult. What makes “The Master” so intriguing is the real world questions it raises about greater purpose and whether or not serving a higher power is a necessity. Dodd presents himself as being fully aware and realized, yet cracks begin to show as the years wear on him and his fame grows. We ask ourselves if he can keep it up. What’s “it”? His followers start to wonder too. But who does Dodd serve? Who is his master? For Freddie Quell, his master is Dodd, and he serves him to the best of his ability, yet it’s not enough for him. Freddie is a torn individual, desperate for belonging and purpose yet hell-bent on never being caged up like an animal. The mere presence of these characters is enough to fill hours of potential stories, whether the plot truly goes anywhere or not. With a film like “The Master”, the journey is in the souls of the characters, and with us as well. It’s a beautifully shot film, directed by a man who has yet to commit a cinematic foul, and acted by two men who disappear into their characters so fully we forget we’re watching a movie. And isn’t that the point? Here is a film that should surely earn Oscar noms for Directing, Cinematography, Art Direction, Best Actor (Phoenix), Best Supporting Actor (Hoffman), Best Supporting Actress (Amy Adams, as Dodd’s frigid wife), as well as Best Picture, which it will surely win until I am convinced otherwise (Ben Affleck’s “Argo”, perhaps?). This film just “feels” like a winner. Not only that, but PTA might just have gotten away with presenting an (sometimes harsh) analogy to Scientology, as well as slyly suggesting that both of his lead characters are closeted gays. Talk about a loaded film.

I was so excited to see this movie because I really like the actors. After watching the movie's trailer, I was not sure what the movie was about. After watching the movie, I still don't know what it was about. The story was lacking, the movie characters were wierd, the dialogue often confusing and non-sensical, and the acting was the ONLY redeeming factor. Joaquin Phoenix's acting was spellbinding, but I would not recommend this movie..

There is NO POSSIBLE WAY that Joaquin Phoenix and Philip Symoour Hoffman don't get nominated for Best ACtor (Oscars.) It will be a tight battle. I've never seen Hoffman better, but Joaquin Phoenix was incredible!

P. T. Anderson does it again with his amazing character study, the master. He dissects the intense and often dangerous interdependent relationship between two severely unhinged men, and comes out with a conclusion that's unresolved and unsettling. Joaquin pheonix gives the performance of his career as drifter freddie quell. Paired with fantastic camerawork shot on 65mm film the grand nature isn't in the shots themselves but in the way the characters see themselves. Added in with a fantastic discord of a score and the film becomes an uncomfortable and chilling throughout.

Anderson had gotten his last dime from me. he is a naked emperor fueled by film school loser critics who yearn for meaning in modern movies.
Paul Thomas Anderson ironically is as full of crap as the conman in his movie. He is a Master at cinematic b.s., a magician who disarms you with great actos, pretty pictures and moving score. too bad the movies are EMPTY and meaningful only to him and the ten film critics who struggle to find depth in his wannabe Kubrick style.
Anderson reminds me of the comedian who does not get irony and dies on stage each night and berates the audience for not being smart enough to get his damaged jokes.
Save your money and three hours of your life and pass on this fraud.

Because of the write-up in the WSJ, I dragged my husband away from football Sunday to sit in 2 hours and 10 minutes with no closure. Five young guys were sitting in front of us. They were also harassing the guy who suggested the movie. The sexual content and nudity--can get away with it when it adds value to the content but, honestly, we all came away with WHAT WAS THAT ALL ABOUT?? I came home and looked it up on line and either the high art was not comprehensible to the audience or it was not high art. J. Phoenix was pitiful because it seemed so type cast of his struggles in real life. i just don't find anger, addiction, sex entertaining without a plot that grabs you. Maybe the director is just getting eccentric as some authors do--they leave us in their thinking. Hoffman's acting is always great.

Wasted 2 1/2 hours of my life that I will never get back and I LOVE to go to the movies. This movie was creepy and sickening. I couldn't wait for it to be over. I kept waiting for it to get better and it just kept getting worse. I love Jacquin Phoenix but this was a waste of his talent.

Should have walked out with the several other couples who left half way through. This is one of those movies that delve into the psychosis of a screwed up mind and a 'mentor' that wants to control i.e. Master him. It is rambling, awkward and boring (wished I had brought a book). Stuck it out hoping for the payoff in the end...doesn't come. Ends exactly as it started. The audience sat there as I filed out with that, "how do I get back those 2 hours" look on their faces. A lady I followed out the door, walked over to another lady waiting to go in to the theater, and told her to run the other way. If this is your cup of tea, go for it. From what I witnessed, it wasn't on anyone's beverage list in the theater I was in.

Amazing to look at but doesn't leave you with much to think about. L Ron Hubbard (who Dodd is based on) has always been an amateur psychologist with expertise in techniques for manipulating crowds and this is a very small scale rendering of his techniques which ends up making him far more likable (and human) than I expected.

Beautifully made and acted film inspired by the founding of Scientology by author -- and fraud -- L. Ron Hubbard. Like other recent PT Anderson films, especially "There Will Be Blood," the director's latest centers on the relationship between a father (or in this case, father-figure) and son (though not literally so) -- the Hubbard figure, Lancaster Dodd (Phillip Seymour Hoffman) and his disciple, Freddie, an emotionally damaged and alcoholic WWII vet. The brilliant performances by the two leads -- Hoffman all manipulative bluster and phony bonhomie, Phoenix a nervous bundle of various pathologies -- center the film, but Amy Adams also is outstanding as Dodd's steely wife. At about the 1:45 point I felt the film was spinning its wheels and had said pretty much all it had to say. But the final sequence of the last encounter between Dodd and Freddie was riveting. Flawed, but definitely worth seeing.

Amazing. The sets, costumes, music, camerawork and editing are wonderful. The acting is phenomenal - the best ever. But what is the movie all about? As the man in front of me said, "I haven't a clue." I think this movie's script might very well be the emperor's new clothes. The joke is on us. Nevertheless, the movie is riveting.
Pros well paced, great actors, beautifully filmed, the emperor's new clothes!
