This production will be a tough one to top for the forseeable future. Anna Netrebko, Matthew Polenzani and Mariusz Kwiecien are incredible singers and actors. They have a great chemistry together. Remember their Don Pasquale? Ambrogio Maestri was incredible as Doctor Dulcamara. I have never seen or heard of him before. He had a great voice and his acting/gestures made the doctor come to life. The sets and costumes were great. Bartlett Sher direction was incredible. As always the Met Orchestra shows why it is the NUMBER ONE OPERA ORCHESTRA IN THE WORLD! Catch the Wednesday November 7 HD Encore Broadcast. BRAVO METROPOLITAN OPERA!

Netrebko is superbl. I found the actors in non-speaking roles a bit distracting in film close-ups, something you'd never notice in the opera house. But for a typical rather silly opera, the opera is delightful in HD.

Sorry, Bart, it *is* a comedy, not a romance with violence and comedy. It was supposed to be light, happy, funny. The lighting needs to be amped up: it's *daytime* for most of this or it doesn't make sense. He stole the pasta idea from Cenerentola (nothing original in any of his productions; you can usually figure out where he steals stuff from easily enough). Too much ego and misguided interpretation, not enough originality. And get rid of the hat.
But all the performances were excellent!
Pros great actors, excellent singing

A classic opera with a beautiful score, not excessively silly plot (for a comic opera, that is!) and marvelous cast, in a traditional production without gimmicks. Netrebko (even if her voice was less than perfect), Polenzani, Kwiecien and Maestri turned in superb performances in this highly appealing Bartlett Sher staging. What more could one ask? Better catch this while you can! Under Peter Gelb's often misguided management, the rest of the Met's season seems destined to bring us more than one of his ill-fated, gimmicky, new-fangled travesties. Pity!
