I've never been a big QT fan, but I gave this a try. Not his best work by a long shot. I can suspend my disbelief when I see supernatural powers, but the conglomeration of westerners in feudal China and the way the Chinese characters spoke to each other in American urban style was just too much for me to suspend disbelief. I kept being reminded that I was watching a movie that was an amalgamation of other films instead of an original piece of work. It just didn't work for me. But if you like seeing cartoonishly gratuitous violence, such as eyeballs zooming at the camera, then go for it. Oh, and also get a life.
This movie was average, it wasn't nothing special about it & the blood looks so fake.. there is probably a couple scenes that will give you a few chuckles but overall it was just average
Pros great actors
Cons slow
No, I do not recommend this movie.

I must admit, my boyfriend wanted me to go see this movie with him. Im very open minded to his preferance for action and martial arts films but this movie was awful.
No, it was gawd awful. I was actually impressed that RZA, after being in the music scene, transitioned to film and both wrote and directed this movie --but I was let down.
The art direction was good, the fight scenes held your attention but the first 45 minutes were agonizingly slow. So slow, I saw a couple leave (the theater barely had 20 people) and I would have joined them but I was upset we spent $20.
I turned to my boyfriend 45minutes into the movie and said Russell Crowe and Lucy Liu couldnt save this. At first the movie seemed deliberately cheesy and silly but towards the middle of the story line I couldnt tell if this was being serious or not.
I wouldnt even say wait until DVD. I dont even think its worth that. Im sure it was a stepping stone for RZA. The movie flowed fine, but the plot was terrible.
Pros nice cinematography, good actors
Cons terrible plot/storyline
No, I do not recommend this movie.

An Awesome Surprise. Martials Arts movies are back!
Loved this movie! Not only did it remind me of the old Martial Arts films, it was even better. Better special effects. Better dialogue, the acting was superb! How can you go wrong with Lucy Liu and Academy Award winner Russell Crowe, who were both fantastic? And the story line (or plot) was consistent and made sense to the end. Byron Mann was awesome! He was flamboyant, yet sinister!
No voice-overs and no subtitles - Yes! I am hoping that a PG-13 version comes to DVD, so that my boys can see this - they would love it. I want to see this movie again!
Pros well paced, great story, great actors, great action
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Starts a little lame with no characters to really care about what happens to, but develops pretty rapidly into a good story with good characters, both good and evil. Lots of action and lots of blood. Movie keeps you interested until the very end.
Pros well paced
Yes, I recommend this movie.

A self gratifying, ego trip for RZA, was the only thing accomplished by this so-called feature. It hit me after only the first five minutes, that I had wasted my $14, and the next 96 minutes of my life.
Russel Crowe was great, as was Liu, but even their superb talents could not save this film, which had the dialogue and voiceovers one would expect to see in a 12 year old's youtube video. There was a point in the movie where RZA retells tragically how he came to Jungle Village, and the audience erupted in laughter. The tone of the film was all over the place. If it was purposefully trying to be cheesy, it even failed at that.
The art direction was fantastic though, which made the storyline and RZA's acting all the more tragic and painful. I would say this film even causes Quentin Tarantino's reputation to be damaged for simply presenting it.
Even the score was depressingly sad. I doubt there was more than 5 seconds of the movie that wasn't overpowered by the lack luster soundtrack of midi and hip-hop. I was excited to see this film, and was willing to give some lee-way to a first time director from the music industry... but I just can't ignore how blatantly awful it was.
Please, take me back to Raid Redemption, and erase this film from my memory.
Pros russel crowe, lucy liu, art direction
Cons everything else
No, I do not recommend this movie.

Crazy Asian Kung Fu Movie, Leave your brain at home and enjoy.
Some good drugs were smoked during the creation of this movie. But just roll with the punches. THIS IS A MOVIE FOR THE CRAZY KUNG FU MOVIE LOVERS. Some parts of it reminded me of the Shogun Assassin movie.
Did not like the ni-ger, ni-ger, ni-ger, f,f,f,f music at the very beginning. (LISTEN TO IT AND YOU WILL KNOW WHAT I MEAN) Did not like that one of the main characters (a black actor) was hidden. Why? Because of the make to believe story line about him. Someone wanted to create a movie around a theme (story line) about a black man being the hero in the past, but hid it in a KUNG FU MOVIE. LET'S NOT FORGET ABOUT GEORGE WASHINGTON CARVER.
The unknown black actor did a GOOD JOB for what he was given. Maybe he cound be the next MORGAN FREEMAN. Hoped for more of a part from Rick Yune, Jamie Chung and Lucy Liu. Seen them in other things and they were good.
KNOWING WHAT I KNOW NOW, I MAY HAVE WAITED TO RENT IT ON DVD.
