I have been a Big Alien fan since I snuck into the theatre at 10 years old to see the first one. This movie was a total let down. Poor concept. Bad Story. No scary or suspensful, All over the place editing. I would not recommend, and am very disappointed in both Ridley Scott and Damon Lindeloff, two of my favorites for this poorly conceived project. Do not waste your time

I have been waiting for this film since it was announced and I was not disappointed! My opinion is obviously biased, especially being a fan of ALIEN and Ridley Scott, but my friends whom accompanied me to the midnight showing where just as much in awe and I can easily say enjoyed the film.
As for some of the negative response to the film, I personally find some of the criticism to be nitpicky, and at best formed due to preformed ideas as to the film's story and plot. This was obviously a much awaited release and speculation had been flying, it was hard to go into the movie not having a single clue what was going to happen.
I feel that Scott and the cast did a wonderful job, and the production could not have been better.
Pros well paced, great story, great actors, amazing effects, great soundtrack

Ridley Scott makes sure that by the end of the movie you know that all of the aliens in the film are unpredictable, dangerous, and can trick you into thinking they are what they seem. I does not tie directly into "Alien" and that is clear as well. Scott also makes it a point to tell you that the human mind may never be able to understand a much higher intelligence, regardless of how we try. Gorgeous film and captivating science fiction. The acting is flat over all, regardless of two standout performances, the lead and the robot. To explain what I mean by flat, consider the fact that when the humans saw what they hoped to find, they took it in stride as if they'd seen remnants of other alien civilizations before and so they took their latest discovery with cool detachment. OK, there was a little excitement, but not as much as one would expect. That said, I loved the film and hope there's another one.

Most females don't like sci-fi, action movies, but I do. I went with a girl friend who would have rather seen a romantic drama...bleh. We went to the IMAX 3D. I don't think anyone in the audience moved or made a sound once the movie started. The opening scene was amazing. I just wonder what kind of minds can think up this stuff. It was so original with effects, and the beautiful scenery was similar to video games in a good way. It was a little bit of Alien, little bit of Stargate. Some of the creatures reminded you of the Alien and Predator. At the end, they (the writers) let you know that there will most likely be a Prometheus (name of ship) 2 . Can't wait.

I thought it was beautiful, thought provoking & well acted. The story was a bit confusing & some actors seemed lost as to how they should play their characters (mainly, Charlize Theron). I will see it again, because like many smart sci-fi movies, there's too much detail & subtext to take it all in with just one viewing. Well done, Ridley Scott, with special kudos to Noomi Rapace & Michael Fassbender & the entire visual/technical team.

Comparing to Alien from Ridley Scott, ALien had way much better music , better script and acting versus Prometheus. Therefore Alien was more dramatic. Some scenes from Prometheus will more fit to many idiotic horror movies like snake attack - braking hand of astronaut. Some scenes like surgery in this movie are very good and very well acted ! I am very big scifi fan however this movie quite disappoint me with not good script, improper music and then very low overall dramatic result. All exterior scenes from Island shooting as well digital CGI efects are absolutely awesome. Also Prometheus model ship is as great as Nostromo model from Alien as well as vehicles and alien ship. Actors are ok but actors can play only what is given to them to play from script and that one is pore.

The movie works on several levels at the same time. While James Cameron is a better storyteller, Ridley Scott's genius lies creating new frontiers, as he did with Alien. No doubt there will be a sequest and looking outward to it.

Alien and Aliens are classic, fantastic sci-fi / horror movies. Prometheus had great potential to extend that world in a new direction but unfortunately its poor screenplay ruins any chance of that. None of the characters have any depth to them; their motivations are not explored or understood -- especially Michael Fassbender's David android, and Charlize Theron's character who hovers in the background doing nothing for most of the movie. The action is unfocused and character reactions are not believable. The overall story arc is underwhelming, as is the climax of the movie. The special effects are good, and the acting is fine. Although Guy Pearce's old age makeup is distracting -- I don't understand why filmmakers rely on that instead of simply hiring an older actor. Lastly, this *is* a prequel to Alien, and it suffers because of the filmmakers' apparent need to satisfy a checklist of references to the original. I'm sorry to say that I was quite disappointed with Prometheus.

The beginning of the film was excellent great plot build however, there were holes in some of the characters development. I left the theatre with some unanswered questions in regards to the "origins of man" that the entire movie kept demonstrating in the trailers. Yes it did answer the Alien question but not the origins question. The only reason I gave it 4 Stars was because of the good acting, special effects and cinematography. Plot would be about 2.5 Stars. Ridley still has some explaining to do!

This is the CRAP you get when you have the writer of "LOST" to write a movie the world been waiting for. What was Mr. Scott thinking????
I was so excited and waiting on this movie I bought my tkts for the Imax 2 days before.
Don't get me wrong the special effect was flawless, the director was awsome, acting was ok, but tell me what the hell did i just watch, i dont believe this was a prequel to aliens. This should of been a stand alone movie. The whole scrip was a mess. This would of been an ok movie if we waren't under the impression this is a prequel to aliens.
I don't want to be a spoiler. I was so disappointed, what a waste. Mr. Scott i'm such a fan, didn't you watch LOST when Lindelof was the writer. I GUESS NOT. THIS MOVIE HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH PREQUEL ITS A STAND ALONE MOVIE THAT SHOULD OF BEEN CALL"THE ENGINEERS"

I saw the movie in LA at the largest IMAX in 3D, and was awe'd. The film was dark and eerie, the special effects were amazing and well timed, my heart was pounding so hard from early on, I was glad I didn't have a history of cardiac problems or I would've left the theater. The story was unpredictable. The there were undertones very reminiscent of Blade Runner, but the film moved much fast than BR since they didn't spend much time on character development. The film brought up some interesting similarites in our cultures, though left us with more questions unanswered and has had me thinking and talking about the meaning all night with my friends. Very thought and discussion provoking.

I guessed I just expected more. The cast was amazing and the special effects, impressive and realistic...
The movie falls short in explaining ANYTHING.
You have to infer or guess...now maybe that is what they were trying to do, but many questions left unanswered.
In the end, I spent most of the movie wanting more, and waiting to see something else that reminded me of Aliens.
I'm sure the bonus material on the DVD will explain more: to bad they're waiting until then to do that. Thanks.

In the bible, man is expelled from paradise after eating from the tree of knowledge. The clear message: some thing's man is better off not knowing. PROMETHEUS posits a possible origin of man and then sends man on a quest across galaxies to meet his maker only to discover that man is not exactly what it's maker had in mind upon it's initial visit to Earth. I won't spoil the secrets (though the trailers do a good job of that for you) but I will say that Prometheus plays for the first half like Tree of Life (by way of Alien) before settling into the more traditional gross-out, high octane action and violence you expect from a monster movie. And make no mistake, this is a monster movie.
The question of how this fits into the ALIEN universe is handled intriguingly. It's a prequel but not a direct prequel. Of the story, I can only say that it begins with an extraordinarily promising premise and follows its beats through to their logical conclusions. Whether you will be satisfied by it's logical conclusions is a different story. For all the inventiveness of the first half, in the second half you still have to deal with the same old "supposedly brilliant scientist touching something he obviously shouldn't touch (thus setting events in motion)" or the "two guys who separate from the rest of the group...gee wonder what happened to them?" And despite all the portents of doom, someone still has to say, "We were so wrong!" There were about 4 too many characters for my taste and if you've watched the trailers closely, the "twist" at the end isn't really a twist, though no less interesting. Investigating the true origin not only of a species but of the reason for creation itself was an interesting concept to explore. Not sure it was successful in positing a case one way or the other, but it certainly lay the ground for a sequel, and in 2012, is there anything more important than sequel groundwork?
Prometheus is currently the one to beat as far as visual effects are concerned. In fact as far as 3-D and visual effects both are concerned, we are no longer in a post-Avatar world...we have now entered the post-Prometheus world. Ridley Scott, the great visualist, paints a magnificent canvas. Every ship and creature looked photo real no matter what was happening. The use of 3-D in the space sequences was such that you felt you could reach your hand through the screen into outer space. Feeling the need to up the scare quotient he himself invented several decades ago, Scott succeeds in the creation of new creepy, squirm inducing monsters. None of them achieve the elegance, ingenuity, or downright terror of the original Alien Xenomorph, but you will be freaked out...you will definitely be freaked out. One thing is for sure, Ridley Scott is definitely in his zone here.
To compare this to ALIEN really isn't fair, but as a matter of growth, one would assume that Ridley Scott having done this so effectively several decades ago with no money and with 7 really good actors would understand characterization in this kind of backdrop. I'll say there were four good actors with four good performances in this movie and then everybody else (and there were a lot of 'everybody else') existed to be monster food.
Michael Fassbender continues his storming of the Hollywood acting citadel, turning in easily the most memorable and interesting role in the film. His robot David has an agenda all his own. Fassbender is great here, but I now question his ability to play a good guy or anyone remotely normal (not to say he is the bad guy - the antagonists are quite clear in this film - but to say he has ulterior motives is the understatement of the millennium). Charlize Theron is in great form relishing the frigid corporate princess. Idris Elba adds gravitas and charm to the otherwise forgettable role of the captain and illicits genuine cheers at a climactic moment. Finally, Noomi (Original Girl With The Dragon Tattoo) Rapace puts on her best Sigourney Weaver impression as the films center and heroine. If Weaver was the queen of calm under pressure, Rapace sees her and raises her in a surgery scene that has to be seen to be believed (assuming you can watch the screen as it happens).
In summation, Prometheus is by no means perfect nor will it be the game changer the original Alien was. What will allow Prometheus to live beyond this year is not just its truly game-changing visual effects and use of 3-D, but that it attempts to ask (though doesn't necessarily succeed in positing answers to) the BIG questions that movies stopped trying to answer. It reminded me of a time when movies weren't afraid of taking on big questions and sometimes falling flat on their face. It was a raucous good time and a movie I truly want to see again...assuming I can sit through that damn surgery scene again...woof.

This is a great movie experience, much better than I would have ever imagined. The story line paid respect to the franchise and wasn't over the top, and most of the performances were outstanding. Fassbender is the shining star, with great performances from Rapace and Marshall-Green too. Theron seemed a little overly dramatic for no reason, and I wonder if the reason ended up on the cutting room floor. If not, she was way to dramatic, for unknown/unapparent reasons (you could guess it was daddy issues, but this wasn't pursued by the script). The rest of the cast phoned it in or just didn't have the talent, but were passable enough not to distract from the total awesomeness that is Prometheus!
Pros well paced, great story, great actors, cinematography

I was impressed by the movie. The direction and effects are terrific. The story was simple but engagingly told. My only complaint is the movie offered more questions at the end without the benefit of closure. I would not mind another visit to this universe to see more of what could happen to the explorers and the engineers.
I wish Mr. Scott would make more movies of this scope in this genre.
I recommend seeing this in IMAX.

Sad this couldn't have been the true first movie in the Alien line. It would have made the story line for all of them far more clear! I truly enjoyed the IMAX-3D format for the very first time. It was very..."natural" watching the movie unfold with no kiddie 3D effects. It's hard for me to read the pans for this movie because I thought it was the "answer all" to the Alien legacy. I truly enjoyed it from beginning to end and highly recommend it to sci-fi enthusiasts and especially those who enjoyed all the Alien movies. Even though IMAX-3D is an expensive entertainment still; it's movies like this that make it worth while. See it if you can fit it in your budget!

"Prometheus" definitely lived up to its terrific movie trailer, as it was gripping and thought-provoking from beginning to end. A fine cast of actors was believable, if not heroic, and led to a stunning climax. Can't WAIT for the next chapter leading up to the events of the original "Alien" classic. Don't miss this flick - and don't hold your popcorn while watching it or it'll end up all over your neighbor's lap! Like mine did!

It's atrocious. If you like the original Alien, this will make you hate the franchise. It wants to be the next '2001', but it's even dumber than Alien vs. Predator. I wish I could unsee it.

If you want to know more about the Space Jockey species from the first Alien film, watch this movie. It may not specifically have a direct correlation between the Space Jockey in the first Alien, but you can make the connection and imagine how a ship full of alien egg cargo got to LV-426 after watching this film. The visuals were stunning. I thought the acting was excellent, there are a lot of big name actors in this film. The story was everything I had hoped for. The HR Geiger art element was awesome. The 3d looked great due to the way the film was shot. I have read quite a few negative or so so reviews, but I truly believe if you're an Alien fanatic like I am, you'll love this movie. I caught Alien Resurrection on TV today after I got home from seeing Prometheus a 2nd time, that movie is just so horrible in comparison to Prometheus. I can easily put Prometheus up in the top 3 of the Alien franchise, right up there with the original and Aliens.
Pros well paced, great story, great actors, great visuals and 3d

This is one of those movies that if you see the trailer, you've seen the good parts of the movie.
Slimy alien creatures are the norm, nothing surprising there.
The story followed the lines of the trailer yet didn't add much beyond that.
Events were predictable, not to spoil the storyline. Little clues/happenings lead into results . . . from many other storylines.
Sure it's science fiction, yet even good science fiction/fantasy can make it seem real, and this movie didn't.
I definitely didn't have nightmares after this movie!
However, the IMAX 3D experience is AWESOME!
