Addressing the concerns of violence in The Hunger Games movie: The acts of compassion outshine the acts of violence. Also, the message of persevering through something so tragic, and being the spark of hope that eventually surpasses fear, is a great message for kids -- as well as, good verses evil. If you talk to your children about life and how cruel people can be, and to try and be a good role model for compassion, they will understand this movie. As the old cliche goes "the book is better than the movie." -- not so in all cases, but in this, it's true. I have to say, they did a good job with this one -- being that it was written in a first person narration, it was pretty close to the novel, and truly captured the essence of the tragic tale. As usual, with every novel that has been adapted into a screenplay, there will be some changes and some things left out in the making of the film. But, overall I was pleased with this movie. Before anyone critiques it, they should see it, as well as read the books. This movie has been criticized for its violent content -- but, kids today are actually exposed to much worse through TV, movies, video games, music, etc...as well as the DAMAGING doses of sex being slipped into every form of entertainment we're exposed to in our society. We should educate our children with the knowledge of how blessed they are to be living in a free nation such as ours -- instead of places like the Sudan, where people are suppressed, terrorized, starved, and slaughtered, everyday. There is a huge difference in trying to keep your child's innocence intact, compared with keeping them naive to the cruelties of mankind. Also, if you've ever read the famous works of The Brothers Grimm, Hans Christian Andersen, and other greats, you'll know that many stories written have exposed children to such good and evil of this world...providing many with a moral to the story. Movies such as Harry Potter, The Chronicles of Narnia, The Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, etc...have their share of battles that contain a measure of violence as well -- as so with The Hunger Games, they too, were forced to fight what was evil. I believe, if at all possible, in taking the negative and turning into a positive. The heroin in this story, was able to do that -- as she's a much better role model than most kids have on TV.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

My daughter and I are huge Hunger Games book fans and we both felt that the movie was just as superior! I loved that the movie for the most part with a few exceptions stayed very close to the book. This movie was so good... we both can't wait until Catching Fire comes out! If you love the book... You will love the movie!

There is always major differences between a book and a movie, but The Hunger Games came pretty close. Minor changes were there (mockingjay pin, Katniss and Peeta's time in the cave, gift from District 11, final fight involving Cato and the beasts), but everything significant was still intact.
In the novel, we read her thoughts, but Lawrence does an amazing job with simply a look. I felt like the actors and actresses really had a good connection on screen... like it wasn't forced. On top of that, camera shots and the right music set the atmosphere for the arena. Beware: you will most likely cry at least once!! I can't wait for Catching Fire.

This was an amazing movie. I hightly recommend reading the book first. The movie would still be great without reading the book first but has much more meaning if you know every detail you can only find in the book. I can not wait for the next part. It will not come out soon enough. I could have stayed in my seat and watched it again. Will definitely be buying the dvd when it comes back. My daughter and I have read all 3 books and are reading Catching Fire (2nd book) again already!

Very well done adaption to the Hunger Games book, which was no mean feat considering all of the character complexities and multi-layered themes to cover. Acting was well done with adolescent sexual tension beween Katniss and Gale along with the crush from Peeta believable (and an added treat to watch Lenny Kravitz as the sensitive stylist Cinna). The only major downside were scenes that employed the hand-held camera technique which was both shaky and distracting.
Aside from that- a must-see movie

The movie starts off slow but picks up later on. The story line made you think real hard of about living. Its all about the will to live and keep living no matter what. The movie makes you think very hard of what you have and what you can loose in a second. Pay real attention to the will of trusting someone who wants the same thing you want but you can not share it. Great movie and well done.

I really enjoyed reading Suzanne Collins' Hunger Games Trilogy. I was concerned like many readers of how much they would have to sacrifice to translate the books into the movie. I'm happy to report that this first translation went GREAT !! Saw it in IMAX and the hand-held camera effect could sometimes get dizzying. Casting was spot-on. Woody Harrelson and Donald Sutherland were not my first choices, but they brought facets to their characters that I hadn't imagined. The behind scenes inside the Games control room was an inspired addition not in the book. Keep it up and I'll keep coming back.

Even though my expectations were very high for the film, I am happy to say that "The Hunger Games" does not disappoint. It remains a pretty faithful adaptation of the source material and I would recommend it to both people who have or haven't read the books. The performances from the cast are the main strength of the film, and Jennifer Lawrence does an amazing job carrying the movie on her shoulders. The only complaint I have about the film is that the shaky, handheld camera direction was annoying. I felt like the main reason it was filmed this way was so they could show violence without showing too much violence in order to get a PG-13 rating. Stylistically, it's cool for about a minute, but then it just becomes headache inducing.

The Hunger Games hits all of the high points in the book and uses its point of view to fill in small details that the books couldn't. The costumes were very well done, and the performances were spot-on.
The one small complaint I have is that I would have liked to see a little more depth in the relationship between Katniss and Peeta. The connection was there, but a bit more time spent with them would be welcome.
Also, please be aware that there are segments of the movie that employ a handheld camera for a sense of realism. While I think it was effective, I found it a little overwhelming on the IMAX. If I had it to do over again, I would probably have skipped the IMAX.
A repeat viewing on a less dominating screen is on the agenda..

I was a little disappointed at the lack of a few, what I felt, were key plot lines. I also have a vivid imagination & was disappointed that my mind pictures weren't what was portrayed on screen (but really - what book-to-screen translation can?).
Ok, that stated, once I got over my initial disappointment, remembered the plot as a whole, & the demographic it was originally released for.... I felt a decent job was done.
I now feel confident in taking my 12 yr old.
I also feel that the overall gist of the book translated decently, as well.

I realized last night after standing in line and listening to people talk about it before hand, that if you didn't read the book, I don't think you will understand the movie. Some kids were saying it was supposed to be like another Twilight.. please.. if it was, I wouldn't be going. It WAS true to the book (except 1 part with the pin, but I won't give it away.) The book was very graphic and had a lot of brutality in it, but the movie didn't showcase a lot of that. However, it didn't need to as you could understand what was going on and see their pain. But if you haven't read the book, it may be hard to understand. They put the most important character interactions and parts of the book in the plot. Awesome movie and great acting! Will not be disappointed :)

Sure there and are a few things they did a little different from the book but they couldn't make the movie 6 hours long to include everything. Based on Suzanne Collins' "The Hunger Games Trilogy", "The Hunger Games" is set in the future where in the Capitol city a boy and girl are selected to represent their districts. They fight to the death on live television. A girl named Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) volunteers to take her younger sister's place for the latest match. The story unfolds from there...
Good cast!! "Lots of Action, Suspense and Intrigue". I did not read the book, so I have no pre-conceived expectations. Although a bit long, the pace of the movie was very brisk. There were no lags or stalls. "The Hunger Games" is definitely worth seeing.
I do not feel this movie is for anyone under the age of 13. Parents should use their own best judgement about whether their child should see this movie or not. Once the games begin this part of the movie can get very violent and the violence involves teens.

I did not even know about the Hunger Games before two days of its release. I hadn't been to the movies in a few weeks and the idea of what I had seen in the trailers intrigued me. I went in with a empty mind and came out loving every minute of it. I thought it was amazing how they did all the fight scenes and the acting was impressive. I love the world this author created. What really got me was the brutality of the movie. Not in the sense of blood in gore, but the difference in the relationship of the characters. One minute they are training side-by-side and riding to their destination by aircraft. In the next, they are stabbing each other during the initial bloodbath. The mind boggling part that has kept me transfixed for the last few days was how normal the killing appeared to the dominating society. Their disconnection from the actual events was different, but in a good way. I already can't wait for the next one.
Oh and by the way, if you're one of those people who is an action junkie and needs either a car chase, sex scene, or robbery in the first five minutes, it might take a little bit for the story to get underway.
I am a new fan and will be reading the books. This movie, as I am a male, is suitable for all audiences except maybe little kids. This is NOTHING like Twilight so don't let that keep you away. It is about a girl who protects the things important to her while maintaining her humanity at the same time. Trust me, you'll enjoy it.

I saw this film with three other people. One read the book once and only had vague memories. One (me) read the book several times. The other two never read the book.
The Good:
I loved how they handled exposition. The film actually does a much better job of explaining how people in the capitol and the career tributes view the games than the books did. I think this is because of the severe limitations inherent in writing in first person. I can't believe the film deepened my perspective of events in the books and am really, really impressed.
I agreed with almost all of the changes made, especially in the last few arena scenes and absolutely LOVED how they managed to draw my sympathy for Cato while still maintaining his status as a threat.
The Bad:
I didn't like how they handled Katniss & Peeta's time in the cave. I feel that this time is by far the most crucial character development sequence in the first book and the omission of some of the events in the cave were a mistake. There were so many places that could have been cut or trimmed in favor of presenting more of that sequence.
Also, there were changes that kind of baffled me because they didn't shorten the narrative or serve any perceivable purpose. **book spoiler**
***I'm referring to the fact they didn't have Peeta & Katniss stand out in training by being the only ones dressed alike and the only ones who trained together.***
I also didn't like Josh Hutcherson's portrayal of Peeta at the reaping. His perpetually open mouth came across as acting which is my biggest pet peeve. The rest of his portrayal made up for it I think but still, it was a bit of a scary first impression.
The Really Bad:
***BEGINNING OF BOOK/FILM SPOILERS***
I hate, hate, HATE how they portrayed the bread scene. I know what they were trying to do. They were trying to trick newbie audiences into thinking that Katniss hated Peeta for either not helping her (initial view of the event) or for just throwing the bread at her like she was another of the pigs. I hated this change. HATED IT.
It took away the deliberation. In the book it is explicit that Peeta intentionally burned the bread and took a pretty severe punishment in order to help Katniss. The film not only completely butchers this but epically fails to convey the importance that single event had on Katniss' life.
***END OF SPOILERS***
Bottom Line: If you're a fan you'll probably come across a few things that irritate you BUT you will still love the movie. I think people new to the franchise will probably have a better time watching it. Like I said at the beginning the exposition is handled extremely well. You won't be at all at a disadvantage.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
