I read the books before seeing the first movieand Imax for this movie was exceptional and the main story of the book was portrayed beautifully. However, I felt that some parts of the movie were glossed over (key details about some of the characters; as well as not showing the depth of violence during the games).. The movie couldve been an hour longer to get in some missing parts.

My nine-year old grandson and I made this our date movie and we bought IMAX tickets. We enjoyed every bit of the movie. Since I have only seen one Harry Potter Movie and none of the Twilight saga I am not jaded about teen angst movies. I found all of the characters believable and look forward to reading the books this summer. I will add Hunger Games to my DVD collection and will probably see the movie at the theater again.

I saw the Hunger Games on IMAX and WOW! I thought the movie came very close to the book. O f course some things were left out but you can't expect everything in the book to make it into the movie. I saw a variety of ages watching the movie and everyone seemed to like it. The violence was expected, but they did a pretty good job with PG-13 rating. I read all of the books and would definitely recommend it(not for small children).

Maybe it was all of the hype over the past two weeks. Maybe it was the new talent in the starring roles. Maybe I was in a bad mood (not true, I was actually looking forward to this, even bought IMAX tickets). Maybe I've had enough teenage angst between Hogwarts and Twilight (very true). This movie was very disappointing. I wish I had gone to see anything else a second time, and caught this on pay cable. Mind you, not blu-ray, pay cable. If you liked the book, which I haven't read, I bet you won't like the movie. I hear the book is good. It has to be better than this.

My movie going experience had some added "special effects" as I was worried about sitting through the duration of the film and stopped eating or drinking anything about 5 hours before the showing. It definitely fit with the theme to be sitting in the theatre waiting for the show to start with people all around me eating very fragrant foods. The film is a strong adaptation of the book which I read 2 weeks ago in preparation for the premiere. Does it contain all of the book--of course not. If you didn't manage to read the book in 2 hours and 20 minutes, then it isn't realistic to expect the movie to contain all the details. I really would have only changed 3 things: cast younger look-alikes for the scene with the bread, made the cave scene longer so that the differences in Katniss and Peeta's feelings was more defined and emphasized Katniss and Peeta trying to fill up on food from the time they step onto the train until the Games begin. I thought the violence was handled very well to get the PG-13 rating. I tried playing the start of the Games back in my head comparing it to your typical mad-slasher horror movie and realized how much more gore would have been shown if there wasn't any other content upon which to base the film. I've seen some complaints about the shaky camera shots and maybe it was over-used but there were certainly times when it perfectly portrayed the level of panic that running for your life through an unknown forest would entail. The acting top to bottom was superb. Jennifer Lawrence deserves another Oscar nod for this film although I'll be surprised if the Academy has the guts to give it to her for a blockbuster movie with science fiction/fantasy overtones. The way she delivers exactly what Katniss is feeling in the seconds before entering the arena without saying a word was worth the IMAX admission price. Finally, for those who haven't read the books here's a new suggestion: see the movie, then read the first book of the trilogy, then see the movie again. You will have a stronger sense of suspense. Among my hopes for the next film: that the after effects of being in the arena are not downplayed as they are the parallel to the Post-Tramatic Stress Disorder that our Gulf War veterans live with every day.

An average sci-fi movie intended for teenage girls. Not very sophisticated. The plot is lifted from Greek mythology--Theseus and Minotaur. The plot is not very plausible. Hard to imagine any culture so debased that it would find kids killing kids entertaining. It is admittedly visually entertaining.

I really enjoyed "The Hunger Games" and was very happy to find that the movie followed the book almost to the letter. The actors were all excellent and the actress who played the role of Katniss Everdeen was perfect for the part. In the book there was one spot where I was in tears, and I have to admit that I was in tears when the movie got to that same spot (hint: Rue). I also liked how the producers handled the violence versus the PG-13 rating. The PG-13 rating did not take anything away from this film. I definitely plan to see the movie again and am looking forward to seeing the next book "Catching Fire" on the big screen.....Kudos!!!!!

Set in a time meant to resemble the possible future, this film was a thought provoking look at human nature for me. I loved it. The film flowed very well, beginning with some great context-driven character development for Katniss and her district before taking a turn for an action filled very suspenseful middle and end. I got "1 versus the 99", "government versus the people", "rich versus poor", and it most definitely was a gawking look at what we all consider to be the value of a human life. Very emotionally engaging.. I cried and laughed. Wonderful film.

I felt a lot of what was in the book was retained in the movie. Though it is good to read the book as a primer as a bit isn't really left out but more inferred. I loved the movie and was surprised how ambient it was and how little music there was. It made it very gripping. I agree shaky cam is good every now and then. Maybe even 5% of the movie but felt it was TOO MUCH in this movie and felt like the camera was shaking ALL THE TIME. I don't like looking at the screen when it looks like just a blur for endless scene after scene! Would have been 5 stars if I could really focus on the movie but it makes me motion sick when it is just THAT shaky forever and ever.

I have not read the books so I went to this movie with an open mind. I was supposed to believe that earth has advanced to maglev trains that travel 200mph, and there is one advanced 'class' of people that rules all others. Every year, for 73 years, it kills 23 teenagers for sport and entertainment. And finally in the 74th year, one teenager says "Enough", and the whole system collapses. And that's just the premise of the movie. We are lead to believe that Katniss is a crack shot with a bow and arrow (she shoots all her squires in the eye to preserve the meat) misses an attacker at 5 feet with 2 arrows. How does that happen? Katniss is armed with the only weapon in the "game" that can kill from long range, all the other weapons are for hand to hand combat, yet she takes little or no advantage of her weaponry or skills. She knows that at night she needs to seek the high ground, yet late in the movie when things go dark she stays on the ground and is attacked by genetically engineered 4 legged creatures that can't climb. Hello, stick to the plan, seek the high ground for protection when things to dark. Come on, this movie was just too full holes to recommend to anyone.

Being a huge fan of the book I could not have been more pleased with the film adaptation of it. I thought that Gary Ross truly got the core meaning of the book and all actors involved were cast perfectly. There's no others that could have played the parts better. I thought the cinematography was fantastic especially in the beginning. It helped paint an image of the Seam and District 12. The Capitol was even better than I imagined. I don't want to spoil anything but I for the scenes they did add, I thought they kept with the theme of the book very well and were a necessary addition. Great job to all involved, you truly did a stunning job bringing this book to life. How could have not been great, Suzanne Collins herself was a collaborator!

I gave this 5 stars but really more like 4 and half. I thought that the movie version did stick to the book very well. I will say that the movie did kinda lack on the symbolism and the huge differences between the capitol and districts like how poor the districts are. I do recommend this movie to all but it is very helpful to also read the book. Overall a definite favorite and a well done movie.

Very pleased with the movie version of "The Hunger Games". I felt the movie followed fairly close to the book (there are always creative changes that have to be made when telling any story). I really enjoyed the cinematography - the way the camera moved as Katniss moved, the muted sound when she lost her hearing, the out of focus shots when she was stung by the tracker jackers. I thought that the storyline was well explained so someone who hadn't read the book could understand what was going on (there were a few spots that weren't explained, but I thought for the most part, everything was covered). I thought the actors did a wonderful job portraying their characters, especially Jennifer Lawerence - she was fantastic as Katniss. Overall, it was a brilliant movie adaptation of the book!

I am incredibly picky when it comes to movie adaptations of books. There were a few things that were changed for the movie (some of which I feel were not necessary changes) but the movie stuck to the core of the book. Due to time constaints for movies and budgets not EVERYTHING could be addressed the way the reading public would have liked, but the movie did a fantastic job within the parameters allowed. The casting was fabulous! The different textures of filming (more grainy in district 12 and 11 and brilliant in the Capital) really brought to life the the stark contrasts between the locations. Excellent movie!!!!

First, let me say that I LOVED the book. Second, let me say that I attended the movie knowing that I always prefer the books to the movie versions. That being said, while this was an enjoyable movie, I was VERY DISAPPOINTED with the lack of character and relationship development. I also think they really missed the boat by not being more clear that the citizens of the districts are STARVING (thus the name "Hunger Games").
On the other hand.... LOVED how they depicted the Capitol, LOVED the firey outfits, and LOVED watching the GameMaster in action. I also thought casting for Katniss was well done.
All in all I enjoyed the movie, but left a bit disappointed.

I agree with "MrsQme". I was so excited to see the movie (probably more so than my 11 & 9 year old). We even drove an hour & a half just to go see it in IMAX. My daughter loved the movie because she hadn't read the book. My son & I weren't as impressed. I thought they could have developed the characters a lot more. The acutal intensity of the relationships was not portrayed & are what helped you really get to feel for the characters. I did enjoy the Capital scenes & loved the costumes. The command center was also amazing...not at all what I pictured in my mind as I was reading. I didn't watch trailers or go on iMDb to see who all was in the movie. I loved Woody, Donald, & Lenny...they were great & great casting choices. I would recommend the movie, but probably won't go see it again. My daughter, however, can't wait to see it again & get it on DVD.

I should have known better. Books seldom manage to capture what makes a book great, and for me, this is a perfect example.
Let me first say that my husband, who did not read the book, really enjoyed the movie. The effects were stunning, and the actions scenes were really exciting.
I, however, was disappointed. Character development was poor and important details of the story line were left out. The power some of Katniss' actions was totally missed in the movie adaptation. The emotional tangle of Katniss' relationships with the other characters were not investigated in the movie and I think the texture of the story suffered for it.
On the other hand, I thought the representation of the command station that was running the games in the Capitol was amazing and really impressive.
Again, if I had not read and loved the book, the movie was ok. Not really spectacular, but a fun way to spend a rainy afternoon; but a poor adaptation of powerful book.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

Having read the first book twice, most recently this past weekend before the movie was released, I agree with many of the readers gripes about subtle changes and omissions. However, Suzanne Collins herself signed off on the screenplay, and I believe wanted to be in on the project. Therefore anything that was "changed" was done so with her approval. So if she signed off on the movie then I have no problem with anything changed or omitted.
The movie by itself was FANTASTIC!!!! Easily one of the best movies of the year so far. I might go see it again this week sometime.
Casting was outstanding! I honestly think Jennifer really capture how scared the character Katniss was supposed to be. I'm not sure if there is any Oscar buzz for her performance yet, but there really should be!
The rest of the cast did a very good job as well, even the tributes with speaking parts and I LOVED the imagry from the seam, district 11 to the Capitol. Really told the story with the same way I imagined it from the book!
6/5 stars, or 11/10 on IMDB if we could rate it that high!
Yes, I recommend this movie.
