It would have been hard to live up to the last Star Trek featuring this cast, but I was hopeful it would be as good or better. Alas, it was neither, but I still enjoyed it. I liked the altering of the old story line, just wish the story line was more original as it was the last time. The effects were excellent, as were the entire cast.

While it was a very good and entertaining film, Paramount will learn some lessons, hopefully, in that what makes the new universe great is not its similarities but its differences, and hopefully venture off into new unexplored territory next time.
This movie should still help move the franchise forward. The action and pacing were spot on however, and the Star Trek: Into Darkness is certainly worth experiencing.

Even if you are not a Star Trek fan you will enjoy this movie that will keep you on the edge of your seat throughout. I saw it in 3D and it was amazing!
If you are a Star Trek fan you will appreciate the story line that takes place in the new 'altered' universe even more because some characters used previously will turn up and the dialogue style and interaction between the characters is spot on (can't say anymore or it will ruin it!)

I liked the sequel, it was great (and in 3D). I was taken by surprise by the storyline as it was happening - which was great and didn't expect it! It was a nice surprise. Although I love the the Star Trek actors (except for that little alien dude that is a side-kick of Scotty - it seems too Star Wars and "campy", which I don't like), the villian played by Cumberbacth was amazing - I was so moved by his performance! It was so accurate to the legend. I have to agree (and with regret to the actors of the Star Trek other characters) that Cumberbacth was the best in this movie. Although, I really like John Cho for Sulu. But Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto also gave a great performance! And also the other "special" actor that appeared was a nice surprise.
I like some humor in Star Trek to remain true to its original series. But not all shows had alot of humor in them - it varied. I feel that with this movie, even though it was great to watch, was a bit too funny, too many times, and at the odd times where it shouldn't be funny. Even though I did laugh at most of those moments, a couple I didn't because it didn't flow right. I just hope the Star Trek series doesn't get like Star Wars. Again, everytime I watch that little dude next to Scotty, I wince and have felt that it doesn't belong in Star Trek. Star Trek has always had more of a serious side than funny side (unlike Star Wars) and like to keep it that way. (A hint to J.J. Abrams)
I left the movie trying to figure out if I like it better than the first. I have to say the first one was the better to me (5 stars).
Even though in this movie time line I feel that the technology shown in the movie is FAR superior than what it actually was (obviously) in the original series. I am not saying to make it old fashioned, but shouldn't it be near that idea even though the time line of the story has changed. Maybe I am missing something. Even so, the effects and story were really great.

Attempting to pull off a sequel to a prequel without losing appeal and coming off as forced was a tall order, but what this movie lacked in freshness, it more than made up for with another round of excellent performances by the main actors, a seemless introduction of the villain into the storyline, constant back and forth edge of your seat action, a very "big budget" feel, and lots of classic Star Trek moments sprinkled throughout ("I'm a doctor, not a torpedo specialist!").
The 3D was used conservatively, adding depth and adventure to the experience in just the right places, but without becoming intrusive and annoying, and the majority of the special effects were top notch and believable.
While most die hard Trek fans will likely rank the first reboot a star above above this successor, taking both films on their individual merits and scoring accordingly, this film was better in every way (except for not being the first).

The action in this movie is non-stop, but that doesn't diminish the story at all. JJ Abrams has once again inserted some interesting twists that, while unexpected, still honor the Star Trek canon. Just when you think you know what's going to happen, something totally different happens, but it makes perfect sense.
This movie continues to show how the relationships among the new crew are developing and pushes those relationships to the max. This installment lays the groundwork for more movies in the future. I don't believe there will be any problems building upon this story in the future.
The visual effects are incredible and the 3D makes them especially effective. I will see this movie again and would recommend it to everybody! It's a sci-fi thriller that's packed with action and a deep storyline.

As I was mashing the review buttons, I realized that what went up in this movie compared with the last one was that the dialogue and acting were both raised one notch. That's something that was a little better than the first. This movie suffers the same way that Iron Man 3 did in that either it was brewing too long or the writers and directors weren't sure what they wanted to do with it. Unfortunately, as in Iron Man 3, the climax doesn't build like you would expect it to. The blame could be on both the director and the writers for this one. I was expecting to jump out of my seat at the end, but instead, I was left wondering where this journey was going and when the ending would occur. The climax just doesn't build. It's strange in that way.
My favorite part happens somewhere in the middle. I won't spoil it for you, but it's definitely the highlight of the film.
Another fault I found with this was that the main villain is not quite featured enough. I'm not lead to feel for him, and I'm not torn over whether I want to support his cause or not. They really dropped a golden opportunity there. A good villain is likeable, and this villain is hard to understand and identify with.
One other complaint I have about this film is that it feels like everyone is going through high school puberty. The emotions of the core group of characters in this film are chaotic and they don't ever seem to calm down.
The sad part about this film is that I was able to see everything coming -- with ease. There is one twist when they're hunting the villain, but that twist is short-lived as you can see the next twist coming a mile away (and they almost seem to jump on that bandwagon realizing their mistake). The final twist (probably for the climax) was just awful, and it's probably why the ending sucked so bad.
Star Trek: Into Darkness just doesn't utilize it's highest qualities enough and, in the end, fizzles out like their movie poster seems to suggest. The story is chaotic and doesn't seem to flow together, it doesn't focus on it's most important qualities, and in the end, feels more like a teenage drama than anything else. It's doesn't redefine the genre or the story (like the first one did), and honestly, felt more like it was borrowing something from every popular science fiction movie to come out over the last 5 years. I expected a lot more waiting for this movie to come out for a honking 4 years. It just wasn't as awesome as I thought it would be.
Pros great actors, new experiences, above average dialogue
Cons too complex, slow, poor climax, felt like running hurdles

Technical aspects and effects were excellent. Three D version has some dizzying fast paced scenes. Story was disappointing. Composed of modifications from previous Trek adventures. Needed a truly fresh adventure not a warmed over one to be a blockbuster. The actors had the characters down and were able to make their roles connect with previous expectations in in several cases extend them - most noticeably Kirk and Spock.

Cons tired rehash plot

First, I'm not a hardcore fanboy or "trekker", and I really couldn't believe how amazing this movie was during and after. The effects were incredible as expected, but the story was truly the star of the show. HUGE kudos to the writers! I mean it was executed perfectly. I don't want to say too much, as to give away important plot points, but this was not like watching a remake. Long time and hardcore fanboys will appreciate all the commonalities between these new movies and the original motion pictures. The great part, is that newer, younger viewers will love these movies as well, because they truly can stand on their own! I plan on seeing it again, before it leaves the theater! This is a definite, "DO NOT MISS" movie!

Great tie to original time line. My first reaction in the first movie was, "That didn't happen." Then I realized they were creating a new timeline. I have watched since the first night of the original series and love this whole new universe of possibilities, but thoroughly enjoy the re-envisioning of their lives. Fantastic! The 3D is definitely worth the couple of extra bucks.

I dunno about you, but how many ways can Hollywood reprocess, slice and cut the Khan character-fold into storyline after storyline? How about tribbles? How about exploded moons over Kronos? Can we use the Daystrom and Bradbury proper names AGAIN please??
Vieled attempt to conjure a motion picture alam ST arround terrorism without using the word ONCE, not ONCE, is just too PC for me. Ok, so in 3D on iMax this film rocks from an art perspective. Dialogue is full of Scotty-Bones-Kirk sarcasm and Spock-stoicisms, so its getting "old" and really needs to be retired as next year will be the 50th. The special effects are excellent, as are the costumes, but as a diehard trekker, I guess I'd like to see a deeper darker, more mature Star Trek, much like Nolan has done with Batman. An occasional S-bomb or SOB doesn't inflect enough maturity, IMHO.
Good film, predicatble plot, Pine is no eye-candy replacement for Shatner (despite his adeuqate attempts to mimic the original), and re-Wrath of Khan wasn't as dark as it could have been...nor should have been.

Predictable. I am done with this incarnation of Star Trek! The Spock-Uhurah romance is terrible, and while you always felt the bond between Kirk-Spock-McCoy with the original cast, you don't with the new actors. The weak link is Spock. Not played well. The story had promise, but was way too predictable.
