I'm not going to gush but it was one of the better comic to big screen movie adaptations I've seen. Story was solid and a great bit of foreshadowing at the end for the sequel. The comedy was a little dull and hokey. The story felt rushed to get through 2 hours 22min if thats possible but when you have all the back stories and characters introduced like you have with the whole Avenger team, it's gonna be tough as opposed to a Batman or Spidey movie. Hats off to Joss though for making it work and pulling off an overall solid flick for the start of summer. One thing though - avoid paying the extra money to see it in 3D- not worth it.

totally loved it made me change my favorites with the marvel superheros loved the hulk in this and i was never a hulk fan. could have saw it in 2d though

I wasn't sure what to expect, but this blew me away. It kept you on your toes the whole time and you wanted more when it ended. Great 3D and animation, a few oopses that I noticed, but overall well done.

This was a very funny, super action-packed movie! I haven't seen this kind of movie (in 3D) in a long time!! The theater I went to helped a little bit, but $46 for two movie tickets was worth it (on this movie). My wife & I will be watching it again!!

Really well done action film. Hollywood has messed up some of these comic book adaptions, but the Marvel series continues to impress. There's not much to be said that hasn't already been said, other than this film is awesome. They did a really good job of having all the characters get their share of screen time, without making it feel jumbled. (and stay through the end credits!)

I have to admit I have not seen the movies leading up to this but my 7 year old son wanted to see it. We saw it in 3d and LOVED it. Love that they brought the original actors (except for hulk) back to reprise their roles. And after having spent the weekend watching the ones leading up to this, I can honestly say that I preferred Mark Ruffalo as Hulk. Loved seeing the action in 3D. The story seemed kinda slow and a little hard to follow at times but it does not take away from the movie as a whole. Also loved the interaction between the characters and had me giggling at parts.

Filled with non stop action from start to finish. I highly recommend seeing this movie. You will not regret spending the extra money for the 3-D version.

The story line was too drawn out. Took way too long to get to the point. My husband and I was falling asleep. But once the action started the movie was spectacular.

This was definitely a movie worth seeing, even if you have not followed the other Marvel movies starring the main heroes. However, it would make it easier if people see Thor and Captain America to understand the back stories of The Avengers. I agree with others that I wish Edward Norton had been The Incredible Hulk, but Mark Ruffalo did well.
I definitely ready to see it again.

First, I'll get the negative part out of the way. The Avengers at times leans much more on special effects than plot or character development, but that is to be expected for this type of movie. For example, I would have liked to have known more about Black Widow's "ledger" that was referred to a couple of times, I can't help but think that I should have read the comic book if I really wanted to know. Other characters, such as the Iron Man, Hulk, and Capt. America, displayed some hints of character depth. Most others, particularly the villain, were incredibly one dimensional, almost as flat as the aliens. Could have been developed much more thoroughly and I think this would have made the story more interesting.
Ok, now that the negative part is out of the way, overall this movie was alot of fun. It was action packed, pretty good pacing (although it dragged a little in the beginning), many funny parts that were cleverly written and excellently delivered, and some very epic battle scenes and good uses of the characters superpowers. Not to give anything away, but Iron Man goes through two suits, good thing he's a billionaire because he's gonna need a new one.
As far as age appropriateness, I took my 13 year old son and he absolutely loved it. I wouldn't recommend taking a younger child than that, there are some pretty intense parts/deaths that would scare younger children. The PG-13 is a perfect rating.
All-in-all, if you simply expect a fun time and a comic book type of movie, you'll love it. Don't be looking for in-depth storylines or complex characters. It's pretty much good guys vs. bad guys, an old story that has rarely been told in such a fun, and funny way.
3D is highly recommended - there are several sequences which you can tell were made to look better in 3D, and this really added to the visual experience.

I had some fears about getting so many big stars to work together, having one steal the show etc., although I also had great expectations from one of my Sci-Fi/Fantasy heroes (along w/JJ Abrams). I wasn't disappointed . Just when I was reaching my limit of talk and setup, the action exploded in a intricately woven battle of the superheroes against the evil forces Each of the superheroes was feature, their strengths and personalities were woven together excellently and everything came together.
Pros well paced, great story, great actors, great action
