Although I didn't watch all of the Marvel movies, it wasn't a requirement to enjoy The Avengers. I found the story to be very interesting, with enough side action to keep me interested until the crescendo of the movie.

J Whedon did a great job at directing/writing The Avengers -- not an easy task it is bringing superhero characters together in one screenplay! Like Avatar, this movie will be a benchmark for years to come.

The film from the get-go is filled with fantastic, artistically creative special effects, drama (lots of personal and professional drama), and almost-realistic projections of ominous other-world creatures and invaders who, of course, choose Manhattan this time instead of LA as their initial stage of war against humanity and Earth, for that matter. One can always count on space invasion of Earth to begin in either New York or LA--never Des Moines, IA, or say, Tampa, Fl. Not exciting enough terrain, I suppose, for warfare with aliens. The character dialogue is often flat and winded, yet intentionally and even unintentionally humorous. For example, the demi-God character, Loki, is considered "adopted" because he has anger management issues with the world. The Avengers themselves also have unresolved male prowess issues, are depressed, and narcissistic. Hilarious! I especially found humor in Mark Ruffalo's character, The Hulk, riding in on a small motorcycle he presumably found and rode right to the exact place in Manhattan his Avenger cohorts were fighting aliens. It was so unintentionally cheesy it made the movie audience roar. See this film only because you crave fantastic action and devastation scenes (and perhaps some nice eye-candy men). For great and beautiful dialogue, as well as filmography, go next door to see "Polisse" by French writer/director, Emmanuelle Bercot Maiween.

The movie was absolutely GREAT! It was like watching a live comic book. Action and adventure right from the 'GO!' Tony Stark/Iron Man was truly my favorite. Robert Downey Jr. actually makes his character like a very modern "Now a day's" man, with "Super Intelligence'". Mark Ruffalo as The Hulk has been the most original and accurate. He reminded me a great deal of Bill Bixby (R.I.P.) Sameul Jackson, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth and Scarlett Johansson made it complete. My only dissapointment was that the "Shield" supervisor died! PLEASE, bring him back in the next movie. My husband and I waited until after ALL the credits rolled to see "The Avengers" grabbin a bite to eat after their day of crime fighting. LOVED IT!!! Absolutely the Bomb Diggity"!

The BEST movie I've seen in a long time.To me it had every thing action, comedy, great actors. The Hulk scene with the God Loki was so funny even my wife laughed!!! And she doesn't like action loves.

After years of slowly building up a series of superhero films, Marvel's Avengers finally comes to life in an over the top extravaganza worthy of all the waiting. Even with all the separate huge personalities, the sum here is actually greater than any one of them. This is a team effort in every sense of the word. Its the perfect balance of action and comedic relief with plenty of heart. And when its funny, its unexpected and great. All the small pieces in small scenes throughout the film tie together smartly later in the film.
You should probably know by now that in all the films in this series, you really should stay to the end for the extra scene. And then, after that one, stick around until the very bitter end after ALL the credits for one more scene! Remember this word....shwarma! Gotta love it!

Took my 12 year old grandson to the movie. Turns out I absolutly loved it too! It's not just for kids. Robert Downey Jr. and Mark Ruffalo were great, very funny as Iron Man and the Hulk.

Excellent watch! I went into this one without seeing the Captain America movie (which I regret) but was very pleased with what I saw. NOW, I MUST see Captain America's movie. I thought the cast was very wisely choosen for this movie and I look forward to see where they go with the series. Definitely with the surprise I got during the credits. Wow!!!

Overall I think the Movie could have been better, but it was worth the entertainment value that you can expect from a Marvel comic action based Movie. Disney seems to do an excellent job with the artistry of putting together strong characters that can relate well with one another. At least well enough to pull the story off. Humor offsets the tension in the film which you can also expect from Disney. I would have given the story higher marks if it didn't drag in some parts during the 1st half of the Movie. It's a matter if the screen writers could have done a better job at developing relationships with the characters with out so much film time. I don't know if that could have been possible, so I don't want to be too critical.
The actors also did an outstanding job of selling their roles to us Marvel fans as believable super hero's. I don't know if you can say one actor did a better job than the other. The casting seem to fit well with each personality. Well done to the casting crew! The actors would have received an excellent grade from me if it were not one small annoyance that I have that bothers me...Robert Downey Jr. has one of the biggest talents in tinsel town. I love his powerful charisma and quick wit. I just think he is a little over the top and is too fast with delivering his lines. If he toned it downy just a little bit, this actor would truly be an Iron man in Hollywood. Maybe I expect him to be perfect, but I think it's because he clearly is one of my favorites.
One other note...All though I was satisfied with all the actors roles, I have to give special mention to Mark Ruffalo's character as Dr. Banner. He truly fits (in my mind) the Jekyll side of the Hulk. And while mentioning that, I will say that was the most satisfying portrayal of the Hulk in all of the Marvel movies.
To sum up the acting jobs, I will just say they were able to portray these Marvel Super Hero's the way I remembered reading them, as a kid when I used to buy them at the drug store for 10 cents.
That should show how long Marvel has been around as well as myself.
Pros well paced, great story, great actors, perfect character fit!
Cons slow in some spots.

A well put together, action packed movie with plenty of humor sprinkled throughout. Thankfully, there was not much Gwenyth Paltrow involvement. The movie moves well, the lead actors mesh well together and despite the fact that I am an over 60 grandmother, I got sucked right into the action.
My 11 and 13 year old grandsons were riveted to their seats, not one word of commentary from either of them throughout.
Its loud, so not for younger kids and the plot while fairly straightforward, requires some suspension of belief...again not for the younger impressionable members of your family.....
Pros well paced, great story, great actors

It helps if you're familiar with all the superheroes and their special powers.
My favorite was The Hulk! But, don't expect Shakespeare--it's just a fun movie for the younger crowd.

Some of the best special effects I've ever seen in a movie and the 3D made it even more spectacular; however, the plot was very predictable with not a lot of surprises. The acting was good, especially by Robert Downey, Jr. and Mark Ruffalo. Definitely worth seeing and the battle at the end was tremendous.

What a waste of time. Story line was stupid, acting was like they were going thru the motions, and the action wasn't very action packed. They made Captain Americe look like a wimp. It was so slow moving, I was bored and couldn't wait for it end. They should stick to movies featuring only the individual characters, not the whole group. Certainly won't see the next one. Even 3D couldn't save this snoozer.

The actors played well off of each other, it was humorous at the right times to lighten the drama. The hulk was finally CGI perfectly he was not a cartoon and you could see Mark's features and he does have a personality. I loved it all.

Okay so the last movie I got this over the moon about was the remake of Star Trek. From the minute the movie started the action never stopped. If you are a Hulk fan like me then this movie doesn't disappoint. We are going back to see it again!!
