This powerful true story based on the life of Mark O’Brien hits all of the right notes and is full of heartwarming surprises. Adapted from bed-ridden O’Brien’s article about his experiences losing his virginity to a kind sex surrogate (and learning about the even greater pleasure of loving and being loved in return), “The Sessions” is witty and true, with performances that will certainly garner attention come Oscar time. Helen Hunt has a shot at a supporting nom as the caring sex surrogate, but it is John Hawkes’ dedicated role as Mark that is easily one of the best lead performances of the year. He is inspiring, and so is this moving film.

What an enjoyable movie. Great acting, especially Helen Hung and John Hawkes. Uplifting story. Funny without trying to be - so human. Everything a movie should be. And makes you think about who a person really is and how to endear others to you.

This is a poignant movie with an incredible lightness of being. It has natural humor, but it is not a comedy as the clips advertised suggest - which is probably why I found myself the only one left in the theater 15-20 minutes into the film. To those who left - it truly was your loss

I was initially attracted by the actors (Hunt & Macy) as well as the humor in the trailer. What impacted me most in the actual viewing was the handling of O'Brien's reality. Compassionate portrayal without pathos. Quite a few people in the theatre applauded at the end - I agree.
