In a lifetime of seeing movies none has "lasted" this way - lingering in my mind and really touching me deeply. Filled with mythological characters and subtleties - it has to be seen to understand all its levels and details. I am imagining Quvenzhane holding an Oscar as well as Dwight Henry, Benh Zeitlin and the producers and writers.
Pros well paced, great story, great actors, lasting impact

In a year that's been filled with high expectations and diminishing returns, BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD was a wonderful combination of spectacle and incredible performances. I think its a film that will surprise a lot of viewers who give it a chance, combining incredible imagery of an America most of us haven't seen with an unbearably great performance by the lead, "Hushpuppy," and a cast filled with both trained actors and real people. I love how it captured the essence of what makes us American, with all the strengths and weaknesses that characterize our nation post-Katrina, without resorting to pandering lectures. Its the closest thing I've seen to contemporary myth-making in American cinema.
If I had one criticism, its that the "documentary" style of cinematography SOMETIMES undermined the incredible locations with shaky handheld photography. That said, it also contains some of the most incredible images you may see in a film this year, so its a small price to pay. The special effects, when they are used, are genuinely special, not just lots of computer generated images to fill a screen.
Pros well paced, great story, great actors, some of the best images in a movie this year

Interesting characters can't carry this plodding script filmed entirely with hand held cameras that will make you nauseous. The characters yell at each other through a series of mishaps in the Louisiana Gulf. The trailer makes this movie look great. It isn't. There is a great performance by a young actor, but that's about it.

This movie was as chaotic as it was nauseating. I wish I could have stayed long enough to see how it ended, but it literally gave me a migraine headache because the camera was so shaky the entire time, full of tight shots, very grainy looking, and the set was filthy. In my opinion it went a little overboard. It's easy to see the poverty of the situation without the jerky camera work.

Here is a movie to explain why everyone should be forced to leave the bayou and other low-lying areas around New Orleans. People live like animals in squalor and a poor little girls lives with a psychotic father who gives her just enough food and attention to keep her coming back for more abuse. The low budget only makes this film worse, with lots of jerky camera filming and laughable special effects, which are meant to represent even more laughable symbolism. Save your money and time - almost any other movie will be better.

the most real yet fantastical, small but epic, raw but beautiful, surprising yet comforting film i've seen in years. hard to believe it's filmmaker's and cast's first movie. i laughed, i cried, i can't wait to see it again...oh and the director -- not bad looking!

It's a beautiful tale of this young girl and her father's attempts to preserve their family in the harsh beautiful outskirts of american society. The region is called "The Bathtub" and its battling for survival in Louisianna. The movie perfectly showcases the powerful passionate struggles thru the eyes of 6 year old nicknamed Hushpuppy. It's part magical realism, part documentary and worth seeing.
