I spent a year working in New Orleans area after the Katrina storm and I was having Dejavu of personal experiences that we had encountered. Very real portrayal of a lot of people we met! Poverty and a way of life I had never experienced.
Pros great story
Cons too complex
Yes, I recommend this movie.

I think this movie did everything it intended to do. It felt like a cross between a Terence Malick film and a Sigur Ros music video. It wasn't the greatest thing I've seen in the last year but it was very well executed. They packed a lot in to 1.5 hours and yet it didn't seem rushed. This is probably due to the style of storytelling. The entire film is narrated by the main character who is somewhere around 8 years old. There are several lines of narration that elude to a mature, profound and perhaps mystical interpretation of life that are hard to swallow coming from an 8 year old character. But, these lines fit the story so well that all is forgiven. It's a must see.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

A film by a first time director, starring first time actors, shot on a shoestring budget – and it will almost undoubtedly get an Oscar nod for Best Picture come next January. Beasts of the Southern Wild is not so much a plot-structured tale, nor is it necessarily about “beasts” as we’d think, but instead it is an intense look at a father and daughter, and their complex relationship as they struggle to survive in the south Louisiana community known as The Bathtub. As waters rise and their peaceful existence is threatened, little Hushpuppy must learn courage and strength enough for both her and her ailing father, Wink. While it may be over-hyped as a whole, the performances from the daughter and father characters couldn’t be hyped enough. Quvenzhane Wallis as the girl (only 5 years old at the time of filming) and Dwight Henry as her father are both so dynamite they threaten to blow up the screen with raw power and emotion. If ever it would be a crime to not give someone an Oscar nomination, it would be with these two first time actors. They’re “the man”. (See the film, you’ll get it).

Somewhere in the delta outside the levees there is an isolated island community called the Bathtub where civilization is on hold and education takes a backseat to drinking. Told through the eyes of a child named Hushpuppy who lives with her dying father in a shack and believes the tales her teacher tells of fierce ancient Aurochs ( but really potbelly pigs in make up) returning after the waters rise to consume the world. Its a unique story of a lost world of people holding on to a Cajun culture that might alienate many on the other side of the levee.
This Sundance production was clearly shot on film on as low a budget as was possible and yet it manages to go where mainstream cinema dares not. Its a love it or hate it kind of film that will only play in art houses for a short while. If you're looking for something completely different, this is it. But be warned, its not a happy tale.

I really wasn't sure what to expect when I went to the theater to see this movie but the previews looked intriguing so, why not? At first I thought this is weird, but before I knew it I was rooting for the little girl and her makeshift family. It really transports you to another world and another way of life, which is what I think movies should do. It was refreshing to watch her literally face down her demons; fear, xxxxx (didn't want to be a spoiler), change, and abandonment. It's hard to describe, I liked the fullness of emotional expression, the great acting, watching a kid grapple with issues we all have to face eventually and watching it all presented in a very unique way.
Pros well paced, great story, great actors, gritty life in full swing
Yes, I recommend this movie.

This is a quirky drama set in the bayou, south of the levee. It happens that Katrina hits the community - but it is the community that is the story, and it's a good one. I'm a fan of magical realism, and was a bit disappointed with that aspect, which had been played up quite a bit in reviews I'd seen or heard (or perhaps I'd just paid particular attention to such reviews). So, having expectations that weren't fulfilled, I was a bit disappointed by the end of the film. And then, overnight, I realized what a good film this was. It grows on you.
Pros excellent natural acting
Cons aurochs were cows not pigs

For me, this was an emotionally stirring movie, a very rare accomplishment for a movie. The root, a father's attempt to raise, protect and provide for his child. Quvenzhane Wallis was wonderful in the role of Hushpuppy her scenes of bravado reverting to childlike fear and wonder are amazing. But it's Dwight Henry that this movie belongs to. As Wink, her father, he drinks too much, is distant, and seemingly uncaring, but the looks on his face, those moments that express so much love, insecurity, despair are heartbreaking and the strength of this movie. What he won't express in words and sometimes in actions, his face gives away. Not a movie for everyone, but one I'd recommend to anyone who still wants to believe is strong storytelling and powerful film making.
