I really enjoyed this movie. The actors all fit the roles, were believable and natural. The music was awesome. Very strong, beautiful voices.
I thought there were a few gaps in the story line - everyone just easily accepted that Sister would take the rap for the murder, for example. And no "church" mother is going to go from STRICT to bringing her daughter an extremely revealing dress to wear. And why was there just all of a sudden a nose bleed? Should have happened at least one other time to establish history. I would have liked more back story overall, but I understand there's only so much time.

The movie was good . For the most part this is the modern version of a good classic . I commend Jordin Sparks for her acting ability her singing was outstanding,Two standouts Carmen Ejogo(as Sister ) and Mike Epps (as Satin) As the abusive husband Epps showed me he can act and Ejogo torn up the scenery as the abused female lead

I loved the movie. The original Sparkle is one of my favorite movies. I like the way the story line was changed. I enjoyed the freshness of the songs being sung differently than the original. The make up was flawless and provided a different view for each scene--fantastic job. Whitney Houston was a joy to watch and to see her play such a strong role. Jordan Sparks did a great job and her singing made me cry. Mike Epps showed a different side of his abilities, but he was still "stupid"--- loved him. I experienced several emotions --- crying, laughing, praising God, sadness, regret, anticipation, fear, and ultimate accomplishment. I am proud of Bishop Jakes letting the world know that you can be a child of God, preach the Gospel of Jesus, and produce movies that ultimately display a message of hope and victory. I will be purchasing the CD and then the DVD when it is released.

I truly enjoyed the movie. I was happy to see that the remake did not follow the exact storyline of the original. I watchted with a little sadness, as I thought about the loss of Whitney Houston. Her rendition of His Eye Is On The Sparrow will definitely make me purchase the soundtrack.. Miss you much Whitney!

I watched the original the night before and expected the exact same storyline but was surprised to see they changed quite a few things. The new movie was good, modern and made the characters come to life. It was a hard transition for the new one to feel like it took place in the 60's but I liked them boh. Loved Whitney!

The change in plot from the original Sparkle threw me for a loop, but I quickly adjusted because the changes were reasonable and believable. Where is it written that a remake has to completely follow the storyline of the original? This movie stood fast to the original movie's basic storyline of " . . . Protective single mom raising 3 girls during the 1950's . . ." I enjoyed both versions. I also have a newfound appreciation for Jordan Spark's vocal ability. Her vocal performance during the finale was remarkable and actually gave me a slight chill. For what it's worth, this movie will not receive a nomination for the Academy, but it's very entertaining and even provocative. I also thought that Whitney did a great job. I really enjoyed her solo during the church scene. I also saw glimpses of Whitney's screen presence from her hits, "The Bodyguard" and "Waiting to Exhale." If Whitney had lived, I think that this movie would've been the catalyst to getting her ACTING career back on track. It proved to me that Whitney's voice would never be the same as we once knew it to be, but her voice was still good enough to impress most people and also good enough to pull off her church-scene solo. She did a great job, and I miss her. Overall, I think this movie was a hit. I just hope that it lures young people in, so that they can receive the message --- "With fame comes pain."

This is not a remake of the Irene Cara "Sparkle" movie as advertised. It is an entirely new storyline with unbelievable ideations. Whitney Houston's character is a failed singer with babies from two different men, not married and somehow lives in a spectacular home. "Satin Strothers" is no longer a pimp but a famous comedian!(?). Jordan Sparks however, is beautiful and a joy to watch. If you liked the original Sparkle then do not see this movie. I am EXTREMELY disappointed.

I liked the new version profiling less humble beginnings for the family, but the reasoning for each sister's thirst for more and their eventual consequences , may have been more effective keeping the original structure of a struggling family. Also' the original loss made Sparkle's coming out Of the shadow more powerful, but overall I thought the actors were great and the remake was a classy and elegant effort!

This movie will not compete for awards and probably my least favorite of all of Whitney's movies. The movie gave us a different Whitney when what I really wanted was the old Whitney. Unfortunately, her one song was no Bodyguard blockbuster. The story line is worthy of a made-for-TV movie. The excessive use of Old School recordings marred the real nostalgia that could have been created. The Sparkle in this movie is overshadowed by my yearning to see Whitney make her comeback. This movie would not have done that for her. Perhaps Sparkle will emerge from the shadows of this movie. The talent seems to be there.

I LOVE Whitney Houston, and I like Jordan Sparks. They were the whole reason I went to see the movie. The story was OK, but the singing, not so much, surprisingly enough. Still, it was worth it, just to see Whitney on the big screen one last time. :(

I was great to see a mature Whitney play a matriarchal role. Jordin Sparks added sincerity to the Sparkle character and her boyfriend seemed like the guy next door

I too loved the older version, watched it coming up. Many changes were made I feel for the better. Derek Luke is no Phillip Michael Thomas. Satin, well the verdict is still out. I like the scene settings and the different homes of the various actors in the movie. Sparkle really did Sparkle in her debut, and yes Whitney did bring tears to my eyes as she sang one of my favorite hymns. Great job on the creative efforts of the producers. I will now have to have 2 Sparkle movies in my movie chest.

Movie was neither bad nor very good, but I liked it. Whitney Houston and other cast members were good, but the story line seemed abbreviated. My overall rating would be 2 1/2 stars, but wanted to see Whitney Houston.

As a HUGE fan of the original "Sparkle" from my childhood, it took some getting used to all the changes that were made to the new version, but somehow it worked. Mara Brock Akil is a talented Hollywood Showrunner and I've been a longtime fan of hers.
Whitney Houston played her part well as the over protective, bible toting, stern, and bitter single mom of three young women with a troublesome past of her own, who eventually comes around to showing support for her daughter Sparkle's dream of achieving secular music stardom.
The ads portray Cee-Lo Green as if he is a main character, but he simply has a short cameo role. Carmen Ejogo plays the part of "Sister" with a little less UMPH and sassiness than the original, vivacious Lonette McKee, but I loved the fact that Akil was able to give us a little more depth to most of the characters, especially Mike Epps as "Satin." He did an outstanding job, although he played the part of a famous comedian (go-figure), as opposed to a drug dealer like the original. Nonetheless, the guy has acting chops for sure! The oh so gorgeous Jordin Sparks and talented Derek Luke played the roles of Sparkle and Stix wonderfully.
What I would have liked to see was a bit more of the Levi/ Sister relationship before Satin wooed her away, as in the original film. The breathtaking Tika Sumpter played the part of Delores to a Tee, and there was a stronger bond of sisterhood the remake was able to explore.
There are just some unforgettable highlights in the original story that needed to stay, like the Stix & Satin alley fight, Levi working his way up the hustlers food chain. In the new film, he's on the bottom, and the next thing we know he's on top and giving Satin a dose of his own medicine, but we never learn how he got there. There was brutality with Satin and Sister, but the original "crawl" scene would have worked just as well in the remake. Also, there's never any discord between Sparkle and Stix. He says he's leaving, but never does, and she just takes him back with open arms. Delores desire to leave and become a doctor came from watching her mother struggle as a maid her entire life, but in the new film, they came from a middle class family, so there was no struggle.
Overall, it was a good movie that worked with all the changes, but if I had my wish, I would have wanted to see just a little bit more PAIN and STRUGGLE that sparked the original "Sparkle."

OMG this was exactly what I was expecting. I loved Jordan Sparks voice throughout the entire movie. And whitney was breath-takingly gorgeous as usual...!!! Sister/Tammy's acting was good but her London accent kept slipping out which confused me but still loved her. This is a must see..!!!!

I definitely enjoyed this movie! It had many elements from comedy to the drama that we think of with the original Sparkle. I enjoyed the way that the storyline was changed to make the movie fit our times, yet it still kept the character of the movie. Carmen Ejogo did as excellent job as "Sister". Jordin Sparks was enjoyable as well. We all know the emotions attached to watching Whitney Houston's final performance.

"Sparkle" can be thought of as the ending of a brillant career for actress/singer (Whitney Houston) and the beautiful beginning for another (Jordin Sparks).
American Idol winner, Jordin Sparks makes her acting debut in this adaptation of "Sparkle". "Sparkle" is a singing prodigy who writes music constantly, but is afraid to sing solo in public. She resides in an affluent neighborhood in Detroit, raised by a single mother (Whitney Houston) along with her two sisters.
Sparkle tries to balance a budding romance with her music manager Stix (Derek Luke) while trying to adjust to the changes that come with her and her sisters (Carmen Ejogo, Tika Sumpter) as they embark on what could be a potential singing career and also trying to keep her mother happy. The story unfolds from there...
The camera loves Jordin Sparks. She looked great throughout the movie. Her acting is pretty good. It doesn't hurt that she can sing. Whitney Houston has a very nice Gospel solo that will bring you to tears.
The paid critics were a bit luke-warm about "Sparkle", but over all I thought the movie was pretty good, though there are a few holes and several loose ends were not tied up at the end.
If you are a Whitney Houston or Jordin Sparks fan then you should see "Sparkle"
