Saw the previews to this and thought, "Oh, great--another movie capitalizing on the BLAIR WITCH/CLOVERFIELD/PARANORMAL ACTIVITY found-footage approach." I wasn't even going to consider seeing it until I read some of the positive reviews posted here, which is a testament to the viewers versus "professional reviewers" syndrome.
I've gotta admit, this little gem knocked me out in many ways. Imagine a movie that's a mix of the films mentioned above, and throw in elements of the classic telekinesis horro sci-fi movies of the 70s--specifically, CARRIE, THE FURY, and the criminally-overlooked (and very much a guilty pleasure of mine) Richard Burton classic, THE MEDUSA TOUCH. Along with these characteristics, the film struck me as one of the most incredible, hard-hitting testaments to the dangers of how "absolute power corrupts absolutely." (Another great example of this kind of story-telling is the 1936 classic film version of H. G. Wells' THE MAN WHO COULD WORK MIRACLES.) The guys who becoming unwitting recipients of this power are put through the paces in grand style as the film unfolds, at first reveling in the incredible FUN they're having with it...then realizing the potential of what they can DO with it...and then dealing with the growing dread & horror as they watch their fellow companion spiral out of control, as the long-term damages of years of abuse corrupt his view of his life and the people in it.
Additionally, on the VERY opposite side of this coin, what makes the movie even more appealing is the side-splitting one-liners in the early part of it...there is some dialogue that will have you howling with laughter.
All of this made, for me, a very enriching, entertaining, refreshing and supremely pleasantly surprising movie-going experience. Films of this nature can be very classy when done with intelligence & creativity, in addition to giving the viewing audience credit for ITS intelligence & not subjecting us to something thrown together just to make some bucks. I thought CLOVERFIELD was a class act in this particular genre, and I would put CHRONICLE right up there with it. Highly, enthusiastically recommended!

Fantastic plot and execution. I would go see it again. Solid plot with a lot of philosophical parallels. Very intelligent movie and had enough special effects to make it a credible story.

I thought the movies was just OK. I didn't like the hand held camera effect. I thought the story line was fairly consisitant throughout the movie. Story was descent, acting was pretty good for a bunch of new stars. Go see it at a matinee.

We went and saw Chronicle today. Definitely a movie for the young crowd. The kind that are in 13-21 yr old range. The hand held camera effect during the movie was kind of a downer but the special effects which came later in the flick were ok. Young folks will like it but if you're an adult, go see "Man on a ledge" instead. ;)

Well it started out pretty good, all the way to the middle but then kind of lost it - way too much - kind of lost the reality and it was barely 1 1/2 hr long - if I am going to pay for a movie for crying out loud - give me time wise, my money's worth.

I loved the movie. I wasn't sure if I would remain interested till the end. I was real surprised. Great acting for unknown actors. I was surprised that the movie wasn't full. I think it wasn't advertised as much as it should have been. Hopefully word of mouth will help. I would definitely recommend this movie to anyone who likes the supernatural and super power type stories.

This had more of a story than I expected it to, and very good acting by some up-and-comer young guys. The hand-held style was hard to watch at times, but it added to the uniqueness of it. Surprisingly solid visual effects too, for such an 'indie' style.

Absolute power corrupts absolutely.
The young actor in this movie reminds me very much of a young Leonardo DiCaprio. He goes through some rough situations in his youth, and it bullies him into a corner until he can not control his own rage, then he becomes bigger than his problems.
Great story that plays out as true as if it were real.
We must control ourselves.

Checked out Chronicle last night. It's a teenage mind-over-matter fantasy flick shot in the first person perspective. The movie was a realistic portrayal of superpowers run a muck that in many ways reminded me of "Akira". It received 85% on Rotten Tomatoes and was actually really good. The kid in me has always day dreamed of making this movie. Fun times. :)

The movie seemed to be about 2-3 decades behind the times. The effects were simplistic, before the higher technology we have now. I thought it would be more of a superhero theme. It was more of a high school documentary and video diary of three guys easily impressed with their powers they increase each day. How they got the powers, other than just finding a glowing rock, is not expressed. Nor is how they came to try and accomplish the acts they did, except for the one who gets angry and abuses the power he has. The idea was ok, but it could have been developed and filmed in a much better way.

Chronicle is hands-down the most excitingly creative, dazzling “found footage” film I have ever seen. Ever.
A super hip, superhero origin story told in first person, this flick tells the tale of Steve, Andrew and Matt, three high school students who stumble upon an eerie rock in an eerie hole in the ground. Being young and reckless, they touch it. Their noses spurt blood and they black out. What just happened?
When we see them again, they are in a backyard, experimenting with their new-found powers of telekinesis. Clumsy at first, they eventually learn to control their powers enough to crush cars and levitate themselves into the air - we call it the power of flight.
These first scenes are pure joy, a vicarious experience that will amaze even the most jaded film goers. Director Josh Trank and company smoothly blend a perfect amount of stylized teenage existence with incredibly realistic portrayals of what it must be like to learn new superpowers. (You have to let go of that whole “reality” thing first, though). Would hormone driven young men simply use their powers to help old ladies get across the street? Get real! These kids move cars to new parking spaces when their owners aren’t looking and position leaf-blowers to help them get a peek underneath skirts. Yeah, that seems about right.
It’s all documented by Andrew’s camera (at first anyways), a decision that originated as an attempt to stop his alcoholic father from beating him so much, and to show his dying mother what he is up to all day. But eventually all films of this genre reach a realization - only having one camera sucks. No worries here, as writer Landis and Trank find genius ways to show the film from a wide variety of angles, all of them believable and sensible. They one-up themselves, however, by allowing Andrew to develop such control of his powers that his camera floats above and beside him at all times, a near-extension of his body. This wise choice gives us smooth tracking shots, making this film both cinematic and realistically gritty.
Just as the first half of the film is a joyous celebration of the human spirit of exploration and freedom, the latter half is diametrically darker, bleaker, and more claustrophobic. For all that these powers can be used for good, so too can they be used for evil. For those who want to restrain their powers, there is at least one who wants to dangerously push further. For every hero, there must be a villain.
Both a smartly written teen action flick and a darkly serious commentary on power and our sadly-increasing dependency on technology, Chronicle packs a serious punch. You’ll want to watch it again, just as soon as you catch your breath.

I am giving this movie 5 stars because it really was great. Acting was great, special affects were suburb, and overall a great story. If you think this is about how they got their powers or what that thing beneath the earth is, dont get your hopes up as it does not explain it. It is more about the lives and what happens to these teens with these powers and overall was just amazing and had a great ending to it as well. It will be interesting so see if they can make a possible spin off and do a sequel, but either way, i enjoyed it much so! :-)

I definitely would recommend everyone to see this movie. The movie's special effects were great considering the budget of the film but it went well with everything else. The acting was just as good and helped make the story believable. I think the story was believable because the events that followed were plausible things that teenagers would do and how they handle their newfound powers. What does one expect to happen when a highly hormonal teenage boy with built up angst gets super powers? He starts using it to do bad things. Yup. I am probably likely to have a little road rage myself and if given super powers, I may have caused an accident or two. Minor accidents. but accidents no less. Picture American Pie meets Superman. I give this movie two thumbs up.

During Chronicle, I forgot all about my company.
Well-made. Sensational. Tasteful. Well-shot. Thoughtful. Well-acted.
It was smart enough to know how to give you a movie about super humans, without forgetting the human part of that equation - but letting you have it with the "super" part.

"Chronicle" was an AWESOME take on super hero movies. Well, maybe just a super power movie. Although it was shot in the "found footage" type of cinematography akin to "Cloverfield," it added to the overall experience and story telling. This was one of the best films that truly showed that thin line between good evil and how someone who attained super powers might handle them. Right and wrong, justice and corruption. And the last BIG sequence of the film was one of the best I've seen as super powers go. Switching between all the different angles from phones to security cameras was refreshing instead of the "cinematic" angles from super hero movies. Definitely going to see it again!!

I didn't know what to expect coming into the film, I didn't know it was one of those... 'every angle is shot from a character's camera' movie until the night before.
But it was seriously awesome. They found some silly ways.of implementing the cameras throughout certain scenes but the overarching story and action were incredible. Also, if you're familiar with Akira, you'll notice some slight parallels and likely inspiration taken from that during certain scenes of this movie.
Seriously worth your money, go check it out. My only gripe would be that it was pretty short, but I saw it early in the day so I felt it was worth every penny.

Overall this movie was pointless. The only interesting thing about it was the powers the teens possessed. The ending was not fulfilling at all. Like what happens next? I didn't understand what this movie was trying to achieve. In addition the filming angle made the movie hard to watch. There were so many movements that at one point it was hard to follow. This movie is incredible!!! I went in expecting something fun, but man this sucker was the total opposite. Normally thats a bad thing, but it works to the film's advantage. The gurrila style cinematography and lack of music was all just helping atmosphere. Chronicle is now on my top 10 favorite movies list. This is a must see for anyone interested in film.

The movie itself, the story, the premise is what drew me in.
I was not, however, expecting the shaking camera aspect of it that wasn't apparent in the trailer that I saw.
I felt the convention of the camera to be contrived and somewhat forced, and as a result, there were some key moments that were glossed over as the filmmakers made sure that the audience knew that all of this was caught on tape.
At the end of the movie, the group of eight people I was with all felt that while the story was engaging, and that we totally suspended our disbelief to allow the fantastical events to unfold, the camera aspect left us feeling as though something was missing in an effort to fit within a specific type of genre.
A word of caution to anyone who sees this movie...if you are prone to motion sickness, sit further back from the screen. We were in the middle, and still took about a half an hour to feel like were on solid ground after all of the moving of the camera.
Nevertheless, I did enjoy the movie overall...I just wish more time had been spent on developing the characters and story rather than shaking the camera.
