Went in expecting to doze off and be bored our of my mind, but found myself riveted by DiCaprio's performance. All of the characters were captivating, but his performance was stellar! The costumes, the color, the period pieces were stunning. I really enjoyed this one.

About 10 minutes into this movie, my husband and I looked at each other like "what the hell, this is so cheesy". We hung in there though, and I'm glad we did, because the movie and acting got much better after about 30 minutes. It is definitely an over-the-top rendition of this novel, and I don't thing the 3D was necessary-but I'm not really a 3D fan even in action movies. They also used a very modern soundtrack including rap, which didn't work for me. All of the main actors do a very good job, and despite the visual liberties the movie takes, the script sticks to Fitzgerald's novel pretty closely.

Huge fan of this movie. Saw it last night and loved it. DiCaprio is Gatsby!! Perfect for role. McGuire is good too. The party scenes are wonderful in 3D. Music seemed too modern for era. Do not miss this movie, you will enjoy it.

While the movie is absolutely beautiful from a camerawork and scenery point of view thanks to Baz Luhrmann, the director, the storyline overall was missing something. I quickly got tired of J. Gatsby constantly saying "Old Sport" after seemingly every line he had in the movie.
The music/soundtrack left a bit to be desired as well, but then again, I'm not a huge fan of Will.I.Am either.
Overall, I would recommend you go see the movie, especially in 3D. The cinematography is gorgeous.

It's a challenge to make a film [we all know the ending to] interesting but Luhrmann certainly pulled it off. Although the 3D format seemed odd it may have enhanced the visual grandeur of the excess. The actors gave very good performances (yes, even Tobey Maguire) especially Mulligan and Fisher. They made you feel irritated and disgusted, respectively, reactions from the viewer that can only be had through good acting. I had heard bad things from professional reviewers before seeing this May 12th and I was glad to have found the bad/mediocre reviews wrong.

3D was not good, made people and buildings look fake. Leonardo DiCaprio was sooo handsome and wonderful. Toby McGuire was great. Very lush. Again, 3D was distracting, took away from the movie.

Edgerton didn't bring enough of Buchanan's dark side to make the contrast at the end that Gatsby's aloofness was due to him being a better man than to lower himself to their level. More dialoge about his disdain for Gatsby because he knew in his heart of hearts that Daisy loved Gatsby and not him; would have been one way to better develop that idea.

Ignore all the lukewarm and bad reviews of this movie. All the critics think they know what the novel is all about, they are so certain what it means and how this movie doesn't match up to their correct opinion about the book. They are all wrong. This is a fabulous Baz Luhrman movie (and don't forget it's Baz Luhrman: it is going to be his vision and over the top, etc. if you like his movies you will automatically love this movie, but even if you don't like his movies and you love the book you should see this.) Far better than the anemic Redford version (ugh -- who could be that crazy about Mia Farrow?). This movie was all I expected and more. I love the book, think it is the Great American Novel, and I loved this movie. And the mix of music is AWESOME. Bach, Fats Waller, Jay Z, Lana del Rey -- IT ALL WORKS! DiCaprio is amazing, Mulligan is perfect as Daisy, and Toby Maguire (not one of my favorites) is wonderful as Nick.
Pros well paced, great story, great actors, great music, gorgeous costumes

This adaptation is pretty good. Not exactly true to the original novel but a good film nonetheless. The party scenes are over the top and adequately reflect the decadence of the times. Go see it but read the book, too!
