I recently screened the 1974 version of The Great Gatsby with Robert Redford and Mia Farrow. It was good. But so was this version with Leonardo DiCaprio. They are different in style but both are enjoyable entertainment in the retelling of this classic love-triangle tale set in an age of excess and exuberance. This version is dazzling entertainment, a lot of fun to watch, very beautiful visually. The 3D didn't add to the story, but it sure was visual fun. I don't understand why the critics are complaining about the style being over-the-top. I thought it was "delicious." I much preferred Carrie Mulligan's version of Daisy....she was less shallow and self-absorbed, thus more sympathetically conflicted than the Mia Farrow version. Only complaint: It was a tad too long. It dragged once or twice, but it always picked up the pace again.
Pros great story, great actors

Movie is overdone and slow to start, but the 3D effects hold your interest. It gets better as it progresses.

Perfect selection of actors!! Leo was awesome in the role, he filled the shoes so to say! Isla Fisher was great also.. would see it again! WONDERFUL MOVIE!

This movie's sound (especially Rhapsody in Blue and the gigantic organ) and visuals are superb. Acting is ok. Leonardo DiCaprio is very good as usual. Story line is only so-so. The movie sort of plods along.

Its everything you would expect from Baz Luhrmann and not a lot of the feel of F. Scott Fitzgerald. Its showy. Its shallow. The party scenes are wildly over the top. The story was like a Vegas version of the Eiffel Tower. Yet, its certainly entertaining and quite visual like his earlier film Moulin Rouge. His style is that of a music video.
DiCaprio is all charm. Maguire is all innocence. Edgarton is a brute of old money.
Skip the 3D and save some money. It only matters in the party scene.
I feel that Luhrmann missed a lot of what Fitzgerald was trying to say, but maybe that doesn't matter in one of his films to his fans. DiCaprio looks good and the art directing is fantastic. In the end it felt like this retelling should have been known as the Good Gatsby. It really wasn't great, but it was certainly good enough for an evening at the movies.

I really liked the Great Gatsby. I love Leonardo DiCaprio he is a GREAT actor. there has not been a movie yet that he has acted in that I haven't liked. also it was an awsome book.

This was such a great movie. Having not read the books, the story was actually new to me. I thought they did a great job of mixing modern music with an old theme. You honestly hardly realize it. It all just mixes so well. And they couldn't have cast this film any better. Drop everything and go see this movie!
