I really wanted to love this movie, sadly it does not live up to the hype. The computer animation detracts from the visual, instead of adding a realness to that period of time. Second the music was out of character for the 1920's, there was no rap music and of all the great music that could of enhanced that period of time was sorely missing. DiCaprio, Maguire and Mulligan were all well acted but again I was left feeling the movie was missing a real heart. Could of waited for this on demand.

Look it's not horrible but the truth is if you take world class actors and a proven block-buster story and a couple hundred million bucks then excellent is the minimum you should come up with, anything else is a failure, and this movie is just not excellent. So much attention has been heaped on the 'look' of the movie that Baz Luhrman's real job has been ignored. He's supposed to be the director, and a lot of talented actors looked untalented in this movie, that's a disaster for a director.

My husband and I went to see this movie and thought it was great! The acting, the scenary and the storyline was awesome. It was exciting, sad and amazing all at the same time! Would recommend it highly to go see!

Baz made a gorgeous film! The production was over the top which one would expect from him. He brought to life the lavish parties and set the scene perfectly. He was able to bring a modern feel to the film which helped to modernize the tale. Leonardo was great and his chemistry with Carey Mulligan was amazing! Joel Edgerton as Tom was also excellent.

The movie was phenomenal! I was impressed with the way they combined the modern with the past and even more impressed with how easy it was to offer a production that was just as or more impressive than Redford's Gatsby. It was very true to the book and it has inspired me to read the book once more. I am definitely going to see this movie again...and again...and again.

DiCaprio was the perfect Gatsby but the other stars were equal in their parts. Tobey Maguire sometimes made me think he was the lead rather than supporting actor. Carey knew Daisy well and did a perfect portrayal. Joel and Isla carried their characters well. This classic came to the screen in a fantastic adaptation and I will watch it again. Agood movie to share with friends. I went with two friends and then to dinner. The movie evoked lots of emotions and opinions and we had fun discussing.

This will be quick. How can one not compare to last version with Robert Redford, whom I liked better as Jay Gatsby? That being said Leonardo displayed the tortured soul moreso than Redford. The production, the movie as a whole was over the top,very enjoyable, and quite memorable. The chemistry between Daisy and Jay was magnetic. Bravo! Nothing was amiss. A wonderful movie - BEST SEEN at Landmark or Harkins if you want to avoid the crap commercials and loud previews found at commodity theaters. As I drove off in my car (yellow MINI) I couldn't help think of Jay's yellow vehicle. :)

Bright and beautiful, typical Baz L, amazing details, dazzling party scenes with great modern music, and overall pretty faithful to novel. A little more obvious CGI than I would have liked but I got over that. Great (amazing) costumes and hair, and Leo DC was better than Robert Redford in his version. Loved the NY skyline sweeping shots and contrast between the Valley of the Ashes and glitzy 20s energy and colour of Manhattan and Long Island. People who are criticising the screenplay adaptation and the way the characters are played are taking it a bit too far, in my opinion. Daisy is just as shallow as she should be, and I even started liking Tom a bit by the 2/3 point. Don't think too much and you'll love it.

In 1922 Nick Carraway (Tobey McGuire) a mid-westerner moves to Long Island NY. He finds out that he is the neighbor of Jay Gatsby (DiCaprio). Nick Carraway soon becomes friends with his new neighbor Jay Gatsby. Mean while across the bay Carraway's cousin Daisy (Carey Mulligan) is unhappy in her marriage to philandering aristocrat Tom Buchanan (Joel Edgerton).
As Carraway write about the life style that Jay Gatsby lives, it becomes clear to him that his cousin Daisy and Jay Gatsby share a past. The story unfolds from there...
Leonardo DiCaprio gives an intense performance and the movie is visually magnificent. Unfortunately that's not enough. I don't feel that Carey Mulligan and Joel Edgerton fully developed their characters and Tobey McGuire appeared a bit dry. This is a decent adaptation of the novel. The Cinematography and art direction are wonderful. The time period was captured magnificently.
But alas "The Great Gatsby 2013" plays like a bad daytime soap opera.
If you are a fan of Leonardo DiCaprio or your read the novel, "The Great Gatsby", then you make want to take a look.

We wasted our money seeing the Great Gatsby, this was not a good rendition. The whole movie seemed like it was directed by a drug addict. The actors did a good job, but the idiot/fool who picked the music, & directed the movie should be fired!

I adore the book. So, I guess the thing I was looking for the most was to have this movie bring justice to the book. Did it? No, not really. Did it emphasize the greatness of the book? Yes it did, kind of. The direction of this movie is very fast paced and quick edits, which I don't think it was supposed to be, other than the parties. F. Scott Fitzgerald's great novel had so many great symbols and metaphors that I think the movie emphasized, which was good. The movie also remained faithful to the book through the dialogue and the majority of the story, which was also good. However, the movie, I feel, did not achieve the tone or mood of the book that Fitzgerald crafted. The rap music and soundtrack did not fit at all. Leo was a perfect Gatsby, however, his performance is great as always. The art direction was good, when there was one. There were a lot of green screens and the characters seemed out of place most of the time. I also felt that it was very modernized and made from Hollywood, and I think that this book needed to be an artsy film to accomplish what the book did. It's almost like they tried to make an action film with no action, which doesn't make any sense. I would preferred a slower paced Gatsby if it would enhance the book. I was just disappointed because there still isn't a movie to brag on for the book. Book lovers will probably be disappointed. If you haven't read the book you might enjoy more because of the story that Fitzgerald crafted. If you don't see it, which I wouldn't necessarily recommend, I encourage to read the masterpiece that Fitzgerald made. There are great symbols and themes in it that I'm not sure a movie will ever capture, at least a movie adaptation of The Great Gatsby.

Absolutely splendid! From the amazing picture quality to some of the best actors ever, this movie is one of my favorites! Couldn't have been better! So much better than the first one done years ago, and they followed the book so well too!

The movie was good. I preferred the one before it but I enjoyed seeing it with modern day technology. The picture was incredible. I probably would have enjoyed it better if I saw in on DVD vs in theaters. It was so loud I couldn't focus and the movie was almost to big for the screen. They didn't mess up the story. Some stuff was different but it was only about two things.

I adored the book and was a little leery about going to this movie after I learned the director was the same one from Moulin Rouge and Romeo+Juliet. This fear, however, completely diminished as the film took the audience through this intriguing, mysterious storyline that has haunted and entertained millions across the years. The acting was unbelievable, with characters exactly if not better than I had imagined them in my mind. Even Toby Maguire, of whom I am not a huge fan, played his role brilliantly. The costuming was breathtaking, the music transcended far beyond the screen, and the filming overall was both interesting and astounding. I would most certainly recommend this move. Yes, it is a bit graphic in the end, but it is so worth every dollar you pay!!

I'm not exaggerating when giving this movie straight fives. I love F. Scott Fitzgerald's "The Great Gatsby" and I believe this movie was the best way it could have been brought to film. The actors did a masterful job bringing this story to life. The visuals and soundtrack made it stand out and will have you wanting to watch it again.
Pros well paced, great story, great actors, great soundtrack

I've read the book twice and this movie, more than any other movie I've seen, kept the integrity of the original novel. The plot was essentially flawless because it included every single significant portion of the book and then some. It exceeded the already high expectations I had in place. Job phenomenally well done. Bravo.

The movie certainly did not live up to the hype or come close to the excitement of the trailer. It never could quite figure out if it was a modern spin on the classic or if it wanted to be the classic.
