The movie made you feel as if you had gone back in time with the exception of the rap music in one scene. However, I thought the mix of music types was extremely creative because having several types of music in the movie made it appealing to all audiences. Although there was not rap music during that time frame, I thought the use of it was an attempt to connect to the emotions of the younger audience by blending just enough of it in the movie so they could relate more w/ the characters through the music. Loved the way they didn't miss a detail and did a great job keeping in line w/ the book. Everyone in our group really enjoyed the movie (went w/ my husband & 3 daughters who are 13, 16, & 25 and they all loved it!) Would highly recommend!

Movie was too long and too over the top with scenes of large parties and dancing. Leave a few of these out and the the story would flow better. Personally, I think DeCaprio's acting ability is limited, but the women seem to like him. The story, cinematography, costumes and beautiful special effects carry this film. Worth seeing for the glamour and cinematic art.

Movie was just so-so, what really was bad was the constant rap music background for things that were happening during the 1930's ... no (c)rap music then and it took away from the "feel" of the movie
I can only think they did this to try to attract a different audience ... fail in this viewer's opinion
my date had to wake me up in the middle of the movie when I fell asleep and apparently started snoring ...

Why do we keep making this book into a film? Because its great and timeless. This incarnation is bold literate and good to look at. DiCaprio is again excellent and McGuire is too.

The movie was creepy, over-art directed, poorly-acted, boring and strange. The music didn't work. Toby McGuire was playing Peter Parker (can he do anything else?). Daisy's character was neither charismatic nor attractive. Leonardo's talent was wasted. There was no chemistry among any of the characters. The art direction was over the top and distracting. We left after scene where Gatsby was throwing his shirts on Daisy. This movie was so ridiculous. . . Wasted 1.5 hours of my life.

The movie gives the book a lot of justice. Luhrmann hits all the themes and symbolism in the story. The pace of the movie was perfect, all the places described in the book were just as I imagined in the movie. The Soundtrack was incredibly amazing, the mixture of 1920's and today's pop culture's music connected both generations for a better understanding of the thoughts of the people in the 20's. Actors made characters believable. Great Movie!

I liked almost everything about this movie, except the music. Rap music does not belong to this movie in any way, shape or form. Young people who grew up with rap music would not know this and would not how disconcerting it was to not have 1920's blues, Cole Porter and other musicians' music from that era in it. George Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue is about the only Gershwin that belongs in it since the book came out in 1925. I think attention to detail such as making sure the characters shake hands properly as they would in that era is the kind of thing that makes a film goes from good to excellent as far as ratings go. Why not go for the total picture? Tinsel would have been made of tin then, not plastic. The costumes were stunning, the cinematography fantastic and the architectural details were wonderous. F. Scott Fitzgerald and Zelda would have been drunk with happiness and would not have noticed the flaws.

I was really excited to see this movie. I loved the book and the old movie and I thought that I would like this one much more. I was very impressed with all of the costumes and all of the glitz but that is about it. I was not thrilled about the story or the fake accents.

All the zooms, in and out, up and down, reminded me of Moulin Rouge & I thought the director heavily influenced by Baz Luhrmann, Didn't know until credits that the director IS Luhrmann! Spectacular glitz rather over the top & sets a bit forced (Nick's cottage just TOO cute & looked like a movie set.) Dicaprio has become a truly superb actor. Intimacy and quiet of the last scenes a powerful contrast to the earlier ones; underlines the shallowness of the lifestyles and of Daisy's character, and thus the irony of Gatsby's hopeless love for her.

Same as the book as I recall. Reinforces why the book is regarded so well. Provides a glimpse at the underbelly of the rich during those times and the squalor which bred their downfall. The non-characteristic music was a bit of a concern yet it didn't detract. Good wardrobe, makeup, scenery. A touching love story also. A man so much in love.

Acting was great, story line was great, it was a complete success. Luhrmann captured the spirit of the book and transferred in onto the big screen. I think F. Scott Fitzgerald would be proud. A definite must see this summer!

This movie will set your heart loose to think big, but then slam you back to earth as the star does not get the girl. A tale of money, power, greed, and a failed love affair told by some great actors. Reminds me of Vegas!

This was a fantastic movie and was very beautifully done. Depressing story. And it is hard to get past the fact that Tobey Maguire was Spiderman. Other then that Carey Mulligan and Leonardo Dicaprio were fantastic.

Gorgeous costumes cannot retrieve this travesty.Over the top-ness for its own sake, which does not serve the gorgeousness of the prose in The Great Gatsby. Special effects which created a feeling of fakeness. At times it seemed as if the movie could have just been an animated film, it was so faux looking. A movie that almost seemed like a parody of itself at times. Of course the story was good--Fitzgerald wrote a good story.

I have read the book, and watched previous movie versions, so my expectations for something "new" may have been to high.
My 70 year old mother, and teenage children went to see it with me and the consensus was that none of us were really enthralled with the movie, but not completely disappointed either.

Enjoyed the movie, never saw the first remake but did read the book. If you have seen the first remake with Robert Redford go ahead and see it again. The special effects make it worth watching. My entire family went on Mother's day and really liked the show. As a matter of fact, I plan on reading the book again! Loved it.

Excellent movie, fantastic cast and acting. One of DiCaprio's best. Very romantic dreamy and beautiful. Stayed tru to the book and made it into a new story for the times with an excellent soundtrack. Long movie but wentby very fast because Iit was done so well.

I loved the movie, It had great special effects and it was well directed. Some of the music didn't fit certain parts but other than that I loved the mix they did for the movie. it had a more modern feel with the 20's mixed in to stay true to the book. Would recommend to friends and family to see it and would love to go and watch it again

"The Great Gatsby" is the newest adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's 1925 novel. This film, directed by director extraordinaire Baz Luhrmann is a fairly accurate iteration of the original source material. I'd say it follows the original book almost too closely. Yes, there are some characters and story threads that took a backseat to the main story, but that's to be expected in any transition from book to screen.
Leonardo DiCaprio is fine enough here. His Gatsby really shows off all of the flaws of the character. His human failings shine here, as he makes mistake after mistake and all we can do is watch a foolish man fall. He talks of wanting his life to shine and to rise above his humble beginnings but loses sight of all of that, for a girl. That girl of course being Daisy, played here by the usually engaging Carey Mulligan. Mostly here she just stands around looking pretty with spinning and dancing. Also, unfortunately, I never believed their tale of love lost and rekindled. The movie just throws the two of them together and says, "Here, these two are in love", and that's about it. Never once did I feel that this was 'a love story for the ages' or anything like that. It was just two flawed and foolish people who don't know what they want, but are perfectly fine destroying anyone around them to get it what they think they want. Tobey Maguire's Nick Carraway was actually pretty enjoyable, especially as our wide-eyed innocent that's dragged into this poisonous world of the rich and entitled. I never felt annoyed at Maguire as I sometimes am. Joe; Edgerton's Tom Buchanan was another delightful surprise here. He seemed exactly as he should be. Easy to dislike and hate but captivating enough that I saw him almost the most fully formed character of the whole lot.
Baz Luhrmann is one of my favorite directors with fine films under his belt like "Moulin Rouge" and "Romeo + Juliet". His hyperactive style is one that is appreciated and welcomed in this world with so many paint-by-number directors we have out there. Sadly, here his talent seems almost absent or at least highly subdued. Everything starts out fast and furious at the beginning of the film, but by the middle and eventual end he seems to have just sat back and watched. I don't really know what he could've done with such a somber third act but compared to the wonderfully delightful beginning of the film it really stands out. There's not many laughs here and the only real smiles to be had are during the beginning. Everything else just ends up being unlikeable characters complaining about rich people problems and doing terrible things to each other.
One of the things I always look forward to in a Baz Luhrmann film is the soundtrack. I can't tell you how many hours I spent listening to his other films soundtracks, and this one is no disappointment. I love what Jay-Z and Luhrmann have done here. The soundtrack was released before the film so I'd been listening to it over and over for a week or two before seeing the movie. That, however, was somewhat confusing and disappointing. He's got these great and powerful songs but in the movie they're hardly used at all. They will start out one of these songs loud and all around you but they quickly fall off to another song or Maguire's constant voice-overs. The songs are mixed in with each other, played off and quiet in the background or barely heard at all. If you're going for the music, just get the album itself and enjoy it at anytime and in full.
This was really a difficult one for me to rate. I love Luhrmann and I thought the cast was excellent, but it's just that snooze of a third act that make this movie hard to recommend. I'd totally recommend seeing the first part of the movie, and even in 3D, but forget about that slow and plodding second and third acts.

Baz Luhrmann's style isn't for everyone but as a massive fan of the Great Gatsby novel I enjoyed this movie from start to finish.

I thought this movie was amazing. I really enjoyed it. The costumes/jewelry were remarkable. The music was incredible. I took my 81 year old mother and 16 year old son and both loved it.
