The style of the original book version of John Dies at the End has been referred to as "H.P. Lovecraft meets Douglas Adams," and it is every bit as disturbing and funny as that would imply. The movie strips down the events of the book to keep the plot moving along, but loses none of the madcap humor, nor the sense conveyed by the characters of coping with a world that is spinning horribly out of control. Even if you're not generally a horror fan, if you can tolerate just a _bit_ of gore and gross-out humor, this film is highly recommended. It's unlike anything else you've seen.
The lead actors are relatively new faces, but judging by this film they have great careers ahead of them. Some well-known faces (led by the wonderful Paul Giamatti, along with the great character actor Clancy Brown, whom you'll probably recognize without being able to figure out from where) support their performances beautifully.
Pros well paced, great story, great actors, unique

This is a mostly faithful, if necessarily abbreviated, adaptation of the fantastic book. The effects budget is lacking, but everything else is perfect. Coscarelli has proven himself as a very able filmmaker in the past, and he knows how to make a film work within budget constraints. No exception here. Everyone at the theater where I saw this were verbally enthusiastic about the experience. Will definitely be buying this when it is available.

There are very few movies where throughout, you have no idea what is going to happen next. And fewer still, where you know ANYTHING could happen next. Such is the thrill of John Dies at the End. Written and directed by the great Don Coscarelli of Phantasm and Bubba Ho-Tep fame, John Dies is an exciting, funny, gory horror/adventure that will keep you thoroughly entertained from beginning to end. A great cast, including the two leads, takes us on a bizarre trip that's better left unexplained, so you can experience it for yourself. John Dies at the End is a film like no other, and it cannot come more highly recommended. You'll want to see it again and again.
