I LOVED it! As someone old enough to remember the American Hostages in Iran in 1980 but too young understand or care about the why's and wherefores--I found Argo to be quite educational. Some of the dialogue in the beginning either moved to fast or was just slightly gratuitous; and there was some trite humor here and there--but there were also some really great one-liners. The sets were perfectly retro & in keeping with that era; and the special effects were fantastic. I liked the printed & pictorial historical narrative at the end. The audience got up to leave as they typically do the moment the credits come on; but narrative stopped everyone in their tracks--they stood in dead silence and the gravity of it all was palpable and very powerful.

In the film ARGO, producer Lester Siegel, played by Academy Award winner Alan Arkin, puts forth real effort into making a fake film a success as a perfect ruse to rescue six wanted Americans hiding at the Canadian Ambassador’s residence during the 1979 Iranian hostage crisis. The triple-threat of Ben Affleck (ARGO’s Producer-Director-Star) must have channeled the spirit of Siegel (the character for the film was the amalgamation of real-life f/x coordinator Bob Sidell and producer Barry Gellar) as he, along with fellow producers and Hollywood heavies George Clooney and Grant Heslov, created a very real, very memorable film crafted with the utmost of professionalism in detailing the story’s plight and rescue.
Affleck ups his game with his third directorial stint and moves away not only from his usual Boston locales but also from the present day. In doing so, he completely immerses the viewer into the period of the film. Alongside the requisite horror show that was the 70s fashion style as well as carefully-placed Star Wars memorabilia – that no doubt brought a tear to the eyes of fanboy friend Kevin Smith – Affleck restaged the storming of the US embassy with the all-too real documentary feel and cast lesser-known actors into the roles of the Americans allowing their performance, not their celebrity status, to carry the show.
Interchanged with this, is the flawless, and at times welcoming, editing of the situation in LA as Affleck’s character, CIA operative Tony Mendez, wheels and deals with Hollywood to create a tight cover story, the kind that only Tinseltown can. Affleck portrays LA as an open, bright and aloof place, contrasting the tight, grainy and oppressive situation in Tehran. Modern-day Hollywood itself makes the most subtle of appearances during the film’s climax through some of the drama during the airport escape including an almost-forced chase scene.
Backed with John Goodman’s smile and Bryan Cranston barking orders like he’s on the set of a Glen Larson TV show, Affleck delicately builds the tension leading up to the escape. Much like Cameron’s TITANTIC, the ending of the film is known, but the wielding of the personal dynamics, which is just one of reasons that made THE TOWN so incredibly good, proves Affleck’s acumen. Affleck provides a fast-paced, suspenseful and, at times, humorous film that makes for great storytelling. Even more importantly, ARGO furthers solidifies Affleck’s talent as writer/director and distancing himself from his roles in a host of truly-poor rom-coms and actioneers from the early 2000’s.

Ben Affleck stars in and directs this compelling story of a covert plan to free diplomats trapped in the Canadian Ambassador's house in Iran during the hostage crises in 1979. Affleck has shown himself to be one of Hollywood's best directors. His acting was subdued and purposeful. Both Alan Arkin and John Goodman as the Hollywood team who create a phony science fiction film as a cover for the escape, are both wonderful in their roles. Arkin delivers the most memorable catchphrase of the film by turning its title into a off color phrase that becomes more than a running joke.
What is most incredible is that the film keeps you on the edge of your seat with suspense and not a lot of action. The tension keeps building right up until the end. This is a small masterpiece about a huge success brought about by a few dedicated people who do it knowing that they will remain nameless. Its powerful while simultaneously understated.

Argo has that solid, kick-the-tires feel of those studio films from the 70s that were about something but also entertained. The movieland satire is laid on thick, but it's also deadly accurate. Schlock has never seemed so patriotic, and Arkin and Goodman have rarely been so good. Argo is a terrific movie that pulls off the rare trifecta of being smart, funny and exciting. A must see.

I was on the edge of my seat throughout most of the film even though I lived through that era and knew what happened in the end. Well directed, well acted. All around great movie. Oh, and Lora Kennedy should get an Oscar for perfectly casting this movie - except for Affleck but, what are you going to do, he was producer & director ;-).

I was in my late twenties when this went down. I thought the movie recreated the look and feel of the times accurately and right on. It focused on a heretofore unknown and unpublicized rescue that was stuff for a movie. I was kept on the edge of my seat throughout the movie. I noticed the younger crowd giggled and laughed at some of the humorous breaks whereas the older crowd remained silent. The ending, where it appears the credits are running, had people standing and then stopping to watch the epilogue. It should have been included in the ending of the movie to have kept people seated and in the theater. Otherwise it was one of the better movies I have seen in some time.
The audience applauded the movie.

A very realistic portrayal of a very difficult situation. Ben Affleck is at his best in both acting and directing. Alan Arkin and John Goodman were hilarious in their comic relief in such a serious film. Overall, it was a very entertaining movie that kept me on my toes to the very end.

Argo was an intense, nail-biting experience as one would expect. Do yourself a favor and don't research the historical events so that you can travel with the movie through the twists and turns. I have trouble with violence, but I felt that the few scenes were necessary for the plot. The acting was great and the scenery looked authentic. I especially liked the information and pictures of the real people and event shared at the end. Congrats Ben and crew on a great movie!

We really enjoyed Argo - great story and acting, an excellent combination of tense thriller and comedic dialogue (even knowing the outcome in advance it was tense). Affleck and company hewed very close to the original story and settings in many ways, and it shows. We want our kids to see this to augment their American history coursework. Definitely worth your entertainment dollar.

Wow, that was a movie. After several comic book movies with my kids it's great to watch a movie with character building, a great story, suspense and action. Very timely with what is going on in the world 33 years later. Never a boring minute. Great acting by all and the ending will have you clutching your seat arms. Highly recommend this movie.
Pros well paced, great story, great actors, sweet 70's clothes and glasses

The film is an excellent drama, based on real events. I cannot fault the film in any way, except one scene which went on too long I believe to show introspection of the main character. This is a suspense rather than an action film (in the limited meaning of that term now).
Pros well paced, great story, great actors, music

Maybe because I was 20 years old in 1980, I just really enjoyed the watching this movie. It brought back so many memories. It is also relevant to what's happening now in that part of the world.
I' m not generally a fan of Ben Affleck, but I thought he did a good job with Argo.

Aside from the great story line and it's historical value, this movie reminds us to pay attention to issues that are currently happening and it can get much worse if we don't take the right steps to prevent it. Great timing to show this before elections ;) as for the entertainment portion of it, very witty, clever remarks and funny scenes and catchy lines. Ideal for anyone above 15 years old due to some violent scenes, although far from how violent it actually was in real life.
