I'm not a big Les Mis fan, so don't take me too seriously. I thought it was OK, although it oversimplified the novel (as it had to do). I though Hugh Jackman was good. Anne Hathaway's role is actually a fairly brief one, but she made it memorable. I didn't think the singing worked, but I at least got the impression that some of the actors would have had good voices if the songs had been done the standard way. Oh, and I thought the songs were totally unmemorable, except for "Look Down," which is reprised at least twice so you can't help remembering it.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

I was anxious to see Les Mis, and for the most part I wasn't disappointed. A quick word to those who are not fans of musicals: you probably will find it unbearably long and breathe a sigh of relief when it ends. With that said, the performances of Hathaway and Jackson are incredible. The supporting cast was outstanding. Crowe carried his part, but he lacked the luster of the other performers. Part of this likely had to do with the stoic nature of his character, but I would have liked to see far more intensity out of him. It might have been interesting to have Gerad Butler in this role as his voice in Phantom of the Opera far surpassed Crowe's. I have to admit that I was ready for the movie to end after more than 2.5 hours. At times it seemed as if the story lagged a bit. Still, this adaptation is high on emotion and should please those who are fans of Les Mis. It's just not the movie for those who don't care for musicals.
Pros great story, great actors, great singing, great emotion
Cons slow, long long long
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Pros: Performances by this well known cast with few exceptions do not disappoint, displayed intimately through the pervasive use of close ups. Voices were not "Broadway quality" but for me this was a plus as it made the characters more real. Make-up and costumes are remarkable in their realism at times.
Cons: Use of hand held cameras (or the effect) is terribly distracting, to the point of causing nausea. This technique is generally used to heighten tension/drama or make the viewer feel like they are present. Neither is achieved and the racking in and out of focus only calls attention to the camera work which seems to scream "look at me" rather than the spectacular performances of the actors.
Additionally, the art direction takes wide turns from gritty realism to cartoon-like. These inconsistencies are jarring and insulting to the portrayal of Hugo's carefully crafted theme that whether we are successful or lucky or respected as individuals, we are all doing the best with what we are given. The clownish costuming and make-up of the prostitutes, for example seemed to mock them rather than reflect their tragic circumstances.
Likewise, the Thenardiers (with the exception of Eponine) were oafish at best in appearance and direction. While character exaggeration might be appropriate for a stage presentation in which the audience is better served by a larger-than-life presentation, the big screen allows for a more subtle and intimate depiction of the characters and their struggles. Casting of the Thenardier couple lacked depth and imagination, rather imitating a Tim Burton film.
I won't get into how I felt about the wisteria lined room with flitting butterflies as Cosette has her first conversation with Marius-- at least the first in this film. I’ll just say that had a quality of cheap stage dressing than a star-studded feature film. The total absence of the courtship between Cosette and Marius is fairly typical of the treatment of the storyline, literally moving from a first glance to professing their love in back-to-back scenes.
Russell Crowe's voice got a lot of criticism in the reviews of this film, but his voice, in my opinion was solid, if not showy. It never "took me out of the film." His acting, however, was a real disappointment. He showed no internal struggle as Javert, rather playing him rather flat and austere. I held judgment until his final scene in which he did expand his performance, but far too briefly and too early in the scene to be effective. He clearly has the ability, but was either poorly edited and/or directed.
Victor Hugo's novel is a lesson in character study, providing detail, motivation, and background on each and every character in addition to justification for their actions and how each was coping with the circumstances of their lives. This film lacks this richness, ignoring character development, relationships, even plot development. Overall, if the story is not revealed in song, it is skipped as this film moves from song to song with little if any transition.
If you are in love with the music and have an understanding of the story, this is a very enjoyable music video. I can't say I didn't enjoy it, I cried at the end along with the rest and I have a new-found respect for Hugh Jackman, but I'm disappointed in this project as a story-telling film.
Pros great actors
Cons camera work, direction, visual interpretation
Yes, I recommend this movie.

This is not everyone's type of movie especially if you don't like musicals. There's a lot of tunes in it. Anne Hathaway will probably win Best Supporting Actress for this role she was incredible, Hugh Jackman was awesome, and I actually liked Russel Crowe in this movie. Very long, but there is a lot of songs that are really well done and performed that you will enjoy if you are at all a theater person. I really like the story of this movie, the acting was great with all of it's characters. As I've said it is absolutely not everyone's movie, but overall I thought it was a great movie musical. It is very long though.

I've seen the stage version five times, so I went to the movie a little nervously. First, I enjoyed it and the surest measure is that the time (all of it) passed pretty quickly. Second, the movie stayed true to the novel/stage versions, if anything it's Catholic origins shine more fully. Third, the performances were mostly quite good with the exceptions of Russell Crowe, who just hasn't enough voice, and Sacha Baron Cohen, who somehow gets lost in two major scenes rather than stealing them as is often done on stage. An offsetting pleasure is Marius. Fourth, it is kind of a guilty pleasure: you really shouldn't so enjoy a creaky, dated, and over produced movie. And that's I still prefer the stage. Much of the excess is left to your imagination and you can have as much or as little as you like.

They took one of the greatest novels of all time with noble and diabolical characters and amazing twist and turns and totally ruined it. 99% of the movie is spent singing instead of developing the plot and the characters. They changed the plot and left out so much story. It was utterly painful to watch and a total disappointment. I was so looking forward to this movie and I have never been so disappointed in a movie. Saw show on Broadway many times has been my favorite show since the first time I saw it. I read all reviews and I am not picking on any but a movie will never be Broadway. But this is as close as you can get. Look I can see some issues when hearing a song like I dream a dream those of you who have seen it on Broadway and know the explosiveness of the song and then hearing it done a different way is not the same. I am sure and share in your disappointment. But you didn't get the feeling or look of the actress as you can in a movie so it is a wash for me. You know some people like the song My Way by Frank Sinatra and think he is the only one who can sing it correctly and I am in that corner but there are many who think Elvis does a better job. All in all you give a little in Audio and you get a great screen performance. It is true I clapped after every great song on Broadway and even clapped at the end of the movie. But I did cry more in the movie so it still got to me after all these years. I will watch this many more times as soon as it is available to download.

Since there was applause at the end I am sure I was not the only one with a positive opinion. I'm surprised at the number of negative reviews on Russell Crowe's part. I think he did as well as any other in the cast. This story has been one of my favorites since reading the novel many years ago. To see it on screen with this wonderful musical score was a real treat. I do wish to see it again. I have been surprised at the number of people who are unfamiliar with the story. That may be why some did not enjoy it as much as others. Though not a real distraction, the cute little street urchin sounded like he had a mouth full of marbles but hearing that very British accent for a role set in Paris was a stretch anyway.

I was prepared to be (at least a little) disappointed...not sure what types of liberties might be taken in converting the musical to a movie. There are two reasons I decided to go: excellent critical reviews, and a great story that so obviously should translate to any genre (musical, movie, book) unless some idiot screws it up. No screw-ups here!
Rest assured, dialogue is not added, songs are not cut out. Yes, the movie really is as good as the musical! (Or as close as possible without the true live energy of a theatre.)
If you worry the WORLD'S BEST MUSICAL might be degraded by the addition of a movie set and cinematography, don't be! The movie comes very close to the musical, true to the highly-charged emotional experience of the original. EXCELLENT, FANTASTIC, AND HEART-WRENCHING!
The acting was generally excellent, though yes, SLIGHTLY flat by the three male leads (more so the actor who played Maris, the love interest of Cosette). The casting was very good, the direction excellent!
Anne Hathaway was a superb choice to play Cosette. As others mentioned, she steals the show at her death, both by her acting and her musical performance. In spite of her death barely 1/3 into the movie, she remains the "real" star, same as the musical.
The audience was enthralled, and as soon as the credits started rolling, the theatre erupted with applause. Then I laughed when I saw one of the names...Sacha Baron Cohen? (Of the comedy/fake documentary "(something) of America for Make Benefit Beautiful Nation of Kazakstan".) Ah, he must have been the innkeeper! (Yes, he was.) Excellent choice, and a definite surprise.
I'm a little surprised at the sharp criticism of Russell Crowe...I saw the musical 25 years ago, and I noticed nothing amiss. True, memories fade with time, but one would have to literally be listening to the original soundtrack before going and comparing each song in detail to have a complaint! They may not be Broadway stars, but they come pretty darn close! EXCELLENT JOB WITH THE SINGING, AND THE "LIVE" PERFORMANCES!
The only MINOR quibble I have is the lack of an intermission. The second third of this movie (from Fantine's death to the start of the French Revolution) seems to drag a little for this reason. Fans of the original musical may want to make a quick run to the bathroom after Maris find's Cosette's house and they sing their duet, if you must go but don't want to miss details you've forgotten.
Ideally, hit the bathroom during the previews...I think they lasted 10-15 minutes! Added to the movie time, that's 2:50; you'll need it!
"Les Miserables" as a movie is something I never contemplated, but whether you saw the musical or not, YOU DON'T WANT TO MISS IT! If you're too young to have seen the musical, now you can see the next best thing.
If you see nothing else this year, this is THE ONE MOVIE YOU DEFINITELY MUST SEE!
Pros well paced, great story, great actors, appropriate cinematography, great set and cgi not overdone, terrific direction
Cons no intermission
Yes, I recommend this movie.

I thought the movie was great...but I was very disappointed in the movie theater's sound system. The volume was too low, particularly because the two lead actors did not have strong, musical voices. When one sees the live production, one is exhilarated by the music and feels the play deeply. Because there is no way to accurately reflect that volume flaw, I choose to reflect it in the dialogue category.

First: Why Russell Crowe? Why, why why?? With whom did he sleep to get this role? Nearly ruined the movie for me. Terrible singer; wooden, passionless performance. He, himself didn't look happy to be there. Ugh.
Next: Hugh Jackman. Meh. His acting was pretty decent, but he just doesn't have the voice to carry the main role in this extravaganza. At times, it was actually painful to listen to him try to hit those high, soaring notes that should make you shiver, but instead made me cringe.
Third: Anne Hathaway should definitely win the Oscar for her heart-rending performance. She left all of herself out there and you feel that she IS suffering, not acting. Outstanding.
Supporting Cast: Sascha Baron-Cohen and Helena Bonham-Carter were perfection, their performances brilliant and bright.
Young Cosette was adorable and more than justified herself as the face of the production. I wanted to adopt Gavroche, he was so winning. Marius and Older Cosette had voices lovely enough to hit all their marks. Eponine was fine. But what the heck did they do to her waist?? The poor thing must have been suffering for real.
The rest of the cast, including the ensemble, were terrific. The anthems were stirring, as they should be, and photographed beautifully.
Cinematography, production design, direction, and art work were all simply gorgeous and ingenius. Those alone made this film worth seeing.
Being an opera, this production really needed an intermission, whether that is currently unpopular for movies, or not. Although most folks can hold their bladders for 2 1/2 hours, I just needed a break from the constant barrage of song after song. It becomes overwhelming and almost hard to follow after an hour. I needed 15 minutes to process it all. While this didn't ruin the experience, it made it a bit tedious at times.
Bottom line: Well worth the price of admission.
Pros great story, gorgeous cinematography
Cons russell crowe
Yes, I recommend this movie.

This was the first theater movie I had seen in 2012, so my preface is that I don't get out much. However, after briefly familiarizing myself with the story and music of "Les Mis" through various media, I was thoroughly entertained by the production! The actors/actresses could hear the music through hidden earpieces and thus sing "live" instead of act to a pre-recorded track. The success of this was obvious as the singing/speaking was so realistic, unlike most musicals. I also appreciated the camera NOT dwelling on graphic scenes, as I had my children along. The only caution is to limit your fluids before taking in this masterpiece, since you won't want to miss a minute of it to visit the restroom!
Pros great story, great actors, beautiful singing!
Cons uncomfortably long
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Very good movie, well done, Anne Hathaway and the and the secondary supporting cast all had wonderful voices. The two main actors' voices left something to be desired. Though I am a big Russel Crowe fan, I think he was a bad choice for the movie, specifically because he does not have a very good singing voice. Hugh Jackman did a great job, but even his voice was weak for the part. Still overall I enjoyed the movie, and found it to be great entertainment.
If you go in to this movie and don;t hold the cast singing abilities up to the standard of Broadway stars, then you won;t be disappointed.
Pros well paced, great story, great actors
Cons singing voices weak on russel crowe, singing voic eweak on hugh jackman
Yes, I recommend this movie.
