I'll keep this short and sweet. Firstly my Les Miserables background, I saw the Broadway show, I have the 10th & 25th anniversary DVD;s, plus the symphonic 3 disk CD's. I have the show pretty well memorized.
Tom Hooper took a chance having the actors do their own singing. Hugh Jackman, though he has a singing background, & Anne Hathaway sing their songs as actors, with raw emotion. Russell Crowe a great actor, but he sang well but did not sing his songs as Javert with the emotion that was needed.
The movie sags in the middle, a bit long, and did not need the added songs. It is a good, strong movie, and is a must see, for fans and first timers alike.
Pros great story, great actors
Yes, I recommend this movie.

I walked away from this film experience feeling moved and glad I saw it. I wouldn't see it again in the theaters; however, I will purchase the DVD. Was it the Best Movie of the Year? For me no. Certainly worth the nomination. Excellent story, excellent acting; however the singing was a bit of a distraction along with all the action that occurred. Too many counter actions to keep track of while listening to the songs. Some of the words of the songs got lost in the action-hard to hear. I hadn't previously seen the stage performance so was a novice to this experience. I'm not feeling certain the musical stage performance was appropriate for film. Having said that, it was a worthwhile experience. All of the lead and supporting actors' performances were outstanding.
Pros great story, great actors, worthy experiment
Cons too complex, words of songs lost in action
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Anyone who thinks this movie was about the music, misses the point. No doubt the brilliant score enhances this classic story, but the impact of closeup photography and ernest acting makes this personal journey an experience for the ages that only film can provide. Well done!

Les Mis stands out for its spectacular scale. No one could do full justice to Victor Hugo's 1900 page book. The 1958 french film version probably came the closest to its full story, but this is really an operatic version of the romanticized part of the story. There is no talking. Its a story told in grand theatrical songs. Anne Hathaway stands out as Fantine, and will undoubtedly walk away with an Oscar for her supporting role as a factory worker thrown out on the streets who is driven into prostitution to support her far off daughter. But Les Mis is the story of Jean Valjean (Hugh Jackman) a good man who is thrown into prison for the theft of a loaf of bread that he took to feed a his sister's starving children. His 19 years there ends with a parole that requires him to report to the authorities monthly for life. His jailer Javert (Russel Crowe) hounds him throughout the movie as he escapes and tries to rebuild a life as a good man. I found Crowe's voice off key and somewhat disturbing. Sasha Baron Cohen and Helena Bonham Carter play the pair who are watching over Fantine's daughter Cosette (Isabelle Allen), but are low lives and have made her into a slave.
The film jumps in time in three chapters. The adult Cosette (Amanda Seifeird) is now treated as Jean Valjean's "adopted" daughter. She finds her true love in the form of a young rich man, Marius (Eddie Redmayne) who is part of a plot to start a new revolution in Paris. When Valjean learns, he saves the life of Marius and brings him to Cosette and leaves to keep his secret past from her.
If you are not a fan of opera, you will find this long and hard to take. Its a one of a kind film. Those who love musicals will be drawn to the story and the songs.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

You of course have to let the New Testament vs Old Testament theme go, and you obviously can't compare Russell Crowe with the Javert of the London or Broadway casts . . . But other than that — magnificent!
Fantine's "I Dreamed a Dream" was crushingly moving and one of the most powerfully emotional moments I have ever experienced in a film. Eponine's death in Marius's arms nearly pushed me over the top. Marius's "Empty Chairs and Empty Tables" left me breathless and dizzy. And I was altogether choked up and nearly in tears (ok, actually in tears) in the final scene with Cosette and Valjean as he dies.
Hugh Jackman played an absolutely incredible Valjean. (London's Valjean, Colm Wilkinson, actually played the priest, which I thought was cool.) Marius was awesome. Both Cossettes were perfection. Eponine couldn't have been better. The Thenardiers (Helena Bonham Carter plays Madame Thenardier!) were fantastic (and hilarious). Gavroche was great.
People all through the the theater were crying throughout the film. You just don't run into that. I don't know when a movie last affected me so strongly. And I already knew what to expect! I've seen that musical more than half a dozen times. It's never been that powerful. Never.
This was absolutely extraordinary. I plan to see it at least once more while it’s in the theater, and I’ll owe it the day it comes out on DVD.
Pros well paced, great story, great actors, stunning musical
Yes, I recommend this movie.

"Les Miserables" packs a thundering, emotional wallop

Tom Hooper’s emotional wallop of a film is easily the biggest spectacle in recent years. It’s a lavish musical that hasn’t been seen since “Chicago” took a stab at it back in 2003, complete with intricate and ornate sets, lush costumes, and of course, singing. Lots of singing. In fact, there’s only singing, and while it may take a bit of getting used to, the skill and expertise of the actors is put on display in a rare and marvelous way that no one dare not appreciate. The film, based on both Victor Hugo’s sprawling novel as well as the famed Broadway production, takes us into 19th-century France, where Jean Valjean (Hugh Jackman), who for decades has been hunted by the ruthless policeman Javert (Russell Crowe) after he breaks parole, agrees to care for factory worker Fantine’s (Anne Hathaway) daughter, Cosette (Amanda Seyfried), a fateful decision that changes all of their lives forever. Throw in a couple of hilarious scene-stealing performances by Sacha Baron Cohen and Helena Bonham Carter, and a solid turn by young Eddie Redmayne, and you’ve got a a minor casting miracle on your hands. What makes this film really stand out among musicals is the choice to use live singing on set. No voice-overs or dubbing of any kind here. Every word and note are presented as they were sung on set, raw and true. The result is both refreshing and gritty, lending a darker edge to a usually uplifting genre. While the title may suggest great sadness, the power and triumph and beauty of life in this grand film cannot be overcome, and I challenge anyone to emerge from this film feeling “miserable”.

I'm not a big Les Mis fan, so don't take me too seriously. I thought it was OK, although it oversimplified the novel (as it had to do). I though Hugh Jackman was good. Anne Hathaway's role is actually a fairly brief one, but she made it memorable. I didn't think the singing worked, but I at least got the impression that some of the actors would have had good voices if the songs had been done the standard way. Oh, and I thought the songs were totally unmemorable, except for "Look Down," which is reprised at least twice so you can't help remembering it.

I was anxious to see Les Mis, and for the most part I wasn't disappointed. A quick word to those who are not fans of musicals: you probably will find it unbearably long and breathe a sigh of relief when it ends. With that said, the performances of Hathaway and Jackson are incredible. The supporting cast was outstanding. Crowe carried his part, but he lacked the luster of the other performers. Part of this likely had to do with the stoic nature of his character, but I would have liked to see far more intensity out of him. It might have been interesting to have Gerad Butler in this role as his voice in Phantom of the Opera far surpassed Crowe's. I have to admit that I was ready for the movie to end after more than 2.5 hours. At times it seemed as if the story lagged a bit. Still, this adaptation is high on emotion and should please those who are fans of Les Mis. It's just not the movie for those who don't care for musicals.
Pros great story, great actors, great singing, great emotion
Cons slow, long long long
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Pros: Performances by this well known cast with few exceptions do not disappoint, displayed intimately through the pervasive use of close ups. Voices were not "Broadway quality" but for me this was a plus as it made the characters more real. Make-up and costumes are remarkable in their realism at times.
Cons: Use of hand held cameras (or the effect) is terribly distracting, to the point of causing nausea. This technique is generally used to heighten tension/drama or make the viewer feel like they are present. Neither is achieved and the racking in and out of focus only calls attention to the camera work which seems to scream "look at me" rather than the spectacular performances of the actors.
Additionally, the art direction takes wide turns from gritty realism to cartoon-like. These inconsistencies are jarring and insulting to the portrayal of Hugo's carefully crafted theme that whether we are successful or lucky or respected as individuals, we are all doing the best with what we are given. The clownish costuming and make-up of the prostitutes, for example seemed to mock them rather than reflect their tragic circumstances.
Likewise, the Thenardiers (with the exception of Eponine) were oafish at best in appearance and direction. While character exaggeration might be appropriate for a stage presentation in which the audience is better served by a larger-than-life presentation, the big screen allows for a more subtle and intimate depiction of the characters and their struggles. Casting of the Thenardier couple lacked depth and imagination, rather imitating a Tim Burton film.
I won't get into how I felt about the wisteria lined room with flitting butterflies as Cosette has her first conversation with Marius-- at least the first in this film. I’ll just say that had a quality of cheap stage dressing than a star-studded feature film. The total absence of the courtship between Cosette and Marius is fairly typical of the treatment of the storyline, literally moving from a first glance to professing their love in back-to-back scenes.
Russell Crowe's voice got a lot of criticism in the reviews of this film, but his voice, in my opinion was solid, if not showy. It never "took me out of the film." His acting, however, was a real disappointment. He showed no internal struggle as Javert, rather playing him rather flat and austere. I held judgment until his final scene in which he did expand his performance, but far too briefly and too early in the scene to be effective. He clearly has the ability, but was either poorly edited and/or directed.
Victor Hugo's novel is a lesson in character study, providing detail, motivation, and background on each and every character in addition to justification for their actions and how each was coping with the circumstances of their lives. This film lacks this richness, ignoring character development, relationships, even plot development. Overall, if the story is not revealed in song, it is skipped as this film moves from song to song with little if any transition.
If you are in love with the music and have an understanding of the story, this is a very enjoyable music video. I can't say I didn't enjoy it, I cried at the end along with the rest and I have a new-found respect for Hugh Jackman, but I'm disappointed in this project as a story-telling film.

Yes, I recommend this movie.

This is not everyone's type of movie especially if you don't like musicals. There's a lot of tunes in it. Anne Hathaway will probably win Best Supporting Actress for this role she was incredible, Hugh Jackman was awesome, and I actually liked Russel Crowe in this movie. Very long, but there is a lot of songs that are really well done and performed that you will enjoy if you are at all a theater person. I really like the story of this movie, the acting was great with all of it's characters. As I've said it is absolutely not everyone's movie, but overall I thought it was a great movie musical. It is very long though.

I've seen the stage version five times, so I went to the movie a little nervously. First, I enjoyed it and the surest measure is that the time (all of it) passed pretty quickly. Second, the movie stayed true to the novel/stage versions, if anything it's Catholic origins shine more fully. Third, the performances were mostly quite good with the exceptions of Russell Crowe, who just hasn't enough voice, and Sacha Baron Cohen, who somehow gets lost in two major scenes rather than stealing them as is often done on stage. An offsetting pleasure is Marius. Fourth, it is kind of a guilty pleasure: you really shouldn't so enjoy a creaky, dated, and over produced movie. And that's I still prefer the stage. Much of the excess is left to your imagination and you can have as much or as little as you like.

They took one of the greatest novels of all time with noble and diabolical characters and amazing twist and turns and totally ruined it. 99% of the movie is spent singing instead of developing the plot and the characters. They changed the plot and left out so much story. It was utterly painful to watch and a total disappointment. I was so looking forward to this movie and I have never been so disappointed in a movie. Saw show on Broadway many times has been my favorite show since the first time I saw it. I read all reviews and I am not picking on any but a movie will never be Broadway. But this is as close as you can get. Look I can see some issues when hearing a song like I dream a dream those of you who have seen it on Broadway and know the explosiveness of the song and then hearing it done a different way is not the same. I am sure and share in your disappointment. But you didn't get the feeling or look of the actress as you can in a movie so it is a wash for me. You know some people like the song My Way by Frank Sinatra and think he is the only one who can sing it correctly and I am in that corner but there are many who think Elvis does a better job. All in all you give a little in Audio and you get a great screen performance. It is true I clapped after every great song on Broadway and even clapped at the end of the movie. But I did cry more in the movie so it still got to me after all these years. I will watch this many more times as soon as it is available to download.
Pros great story
Yes, I recommend this movie.
