Streep as always is not afraid to reveal her character's strengths and weaknesses. Gracefully done! Jones was so true to his character. Superb! I have been privy to marriage counselors that were exactly like Steve Carvell's character. Something I found different and essential in this sort of film was how the camera was directed to not only get close ups but to zero in on the eyes, windows to the soul. This film got you in the heart and soul and head, too. The story line was so typical of married couples that become estranged while striving for the American dream and raising children. The love is still there just on the back burner for the sake of the marriage and family kept together.

the acting is so believable. All were perfect in their roles, especially Steve Carell. The movie has very funny moments, some teary, and overall it's very down to earth and full of life lessons. I highly recommend it.

Apsolutely famulos. My husband and loved it we laughed and teared up a little. It has been a long time since I've seen a whole theater laugher all at the same time. It is good to see that the movie industry shows real people no matter what age can still experience romance just like younger people. The actors were wonderful. I intend to buy it when comes out on DVD.

This is a disappointing movie...not a comedy, not a drama. We had a full house, due to the appearance of Meryl Streep, but she was wasted on a very pedestrian story. The ending was contrived, and the hotel scene left folks puzzling as to what happened. Not satisfactory story telling.

It's hard to go wrong with Meryl Streep, and you that's as true of this movie as any of her others. Tommy Lee Jones and Steve Carell also give fantastic performances. As a Psychologist, I truly enjoyed and was moved by this movie. the story was authentic, subtle and well defined. the acting of MS. Streep and Mr. Jones was restrained and expert, they must be nominated for oscars.
this felt like an Ingmar Bergman film at times, during the real "naked" moments in the therapy sessions. Psychologically, it was written expertly, both patients' defense mechanisms were strong in the first few sessions and gradually they began to let down their armour and what was behind the fear and pain was resignation and resentments accumulated for 30 years, resulting in distance and a robotic marriage.
I went with 3 friends and we ALL loved it. OUTSTANDING!!!

"Hope Springs" is about a couple who has been married for over 30 years who's marriage has fizzled out in the intimacy department. Kay (Meryl Streep) wants to spice things up.
Kay enrolls herself and Arnold (Tommy Lee Jones) into an intense week long marriage counseling session for couples. The couple travels to a place called "Hope Springs". After arriving at the clinic Dr. Field (Steve Carell) spends time with them everyday trying to get them to open up about what's wrong with their marriage. Arnold doesn't think there is anything wrong, although there has been no intimacy in the relationship for over ten years and the couple sleep in separate bedrooms in their home. This continues at the hotel they are staying at. Kay sleeps in the bed and Arnold sleeps on the sofa. Dr. Field send the couple back to their hotel with home work (exercises) every day. The story unfolds from there...
"Hope Springs" is light-hearted, funny and hilarious!! Meryl Streep is her usual great self and Tommy Lee Jones is crazy funny as Arnold. "Hope Springs" is only for adults and should not be viewed by anyone under 17. Although you never see anyone nude, there are a lot discussions centered around sex and the details of sex and intimacy.
"Hope Springs" is definitely worth seeing.

I’ve been waiting for a long time to see a good, character-driven film. ‘Hope Springs’ is just that. Anyone who says it’s not a good movie is probably an insensitive, unemotional male, Neanderthal lacking any kind of poignant quality. I was a little concerned that Steve Carell, being more of a comedic actor, couldn’t pull off a serious role, but he did well except for those ugly clod hopper shoes he was wearing. And, of course Meryl Streep is her usual fabulous self as well as Tommy Lee Jones. It made me laugh and pulled at my heart strings as well. Feel good movie. We need more movies like this. They had a Moen faucet like mine, love it.

I think if you saw the commercials that previewed for this movie - all of the comedic lines; the lines that draw you to want to go see the movie - you've seen this movie. There were no surprises; no additional comedic lines that you chuckle over that weren't used in the commercials. And I think that's becoming more and more common. Studios are taking all of the great lines from a movie and using them in the commercials so you don't need to see the movies anymore - just watch the commercials on tv - and you've seen it - all you need to do is fill in the blanks. The plot was fair and only the choice of actors made it worth the 2 hour time investment.

Meryl Streep fans will go to see this movie. Should they? Perhaps not. (But as a Streep Fan, you can't help yourself) If you plan on coming away with the enjoyment and the enlightenment of her previous Romcoms.(ex:it's complicated). Plan again. When Meryl disappoints, it's a disappointment in itself. I would never suggest that her acting was less than stellar. Let's just say this was not one of my favorite characters that she has played. "Fluffy" would never be a word I would use to describe any of her charachters. But fluffy it was.
Everything from wardrobe to art direction was disappointing.
The premise was worth exploring, but in the end it was predictable, The subject was worth exploring in more depth and I don't think that happened.
I have to say that Tommy Lee Jones was the strongest and most entertaining part of this film. Wonderful performance by him.
Steve Carell plays it straight and does that very well.
All in all, a rental.

Terrible script. Meryl tried to keep this movie together, but her character was not believable. Tommy Lee Jones was horribly miscast. This movie dragged most of the way. I would not recommend this movie. Watching Tommy Lee Jones have sex? No thanks.

Can't go wrong with Streep and Jones, and Steve Carell was amazing too. This movie was, at times, painful to watch because the pain Streep's character felt was palpable for the audience. The movie was sad, funny, heartfelt, and a great lesson in what not to let your marriage become. See the movie in the afternoon then take your spouse out for a fabulous date night!
Pros great story, great actors
