Streep and Jones, maybe our two finest actors, give virtuoso performances in this excellent treatment of the decay and salvation of a long-term marriage. In their hands, "Arnold" and "Kay" become live people whose suffering and longings we recognize painfully. Blessedly, none of the usual stereotyping or cheap gags spoil the authenticity. The direction and editing are a bit jerky at times but this seems a minor flaw, considering the film as a whole.
Pros great actors, excellent writing, important subject

The cast, especially Meryl Streep was excellent. If you are looking for a comedy though this is not quite it. Though there a humorous moments this film is more of a drama looking at two people who never communicated in their marriage. People who have been married a long time will relate to this movie more than young couples.

If you've always wondered what older folks think about a lot, this film brings it out into the open. Steve Carell was especially good as the pleasant, serious therapist to the sexually bewildered older couple.played expertly and believably by Tommy Lee Jones and Meryl Streep. You'll laugh and, maybe, learn a little or a lot about how to rejuvenate your own "couple" relationship.
Pros well paced, great story, great actors, made my husband laugh out loud

Any other actors in the lead role would have likely killed this film. Not nearly as charming or whimsical or comedic as the trailers would have you believe, Hope Springs is an all-too-safe examination of what marriage can look like after many, many, many years of being together. The direction is the culprit here, as scenes and dialogue that needed to linger…didn’t, and scenes that were unnecessarily cliche fluff went far too long. The story and characters therefore feel unbelievable at times, and situations arise without seemingly any conflict, or far too much. It’s all stop-starty, an annoying roller coaster ride toying with my emotions even though I know how it’s going to end, mostly. Opportunities to dig deeper were sorely missed, especially with such talents as Tommy Lee Jones and Meryl Streep on board. Like I said before, they both do a fantastic job, especially Jones. I just wish they could have been given a chance to do more.

My husband and I both enjoyed this movie. I was the one who wanted to see this movie and when we got to the theatre he sat down and said "Good night!" He never closed his eyes and really enjoyed the movie too!

You couldn't get much better. The subtle body language between the two actors, the great dialogue, Wonderful interaction with the therapist...it just doesn't get better. I only gave it a low score on special effects because there weren't any...you can't grade what's not there.
To me, there were only two places where the movie fell down. During the therapy sessions, Arnold references a time when Kay said no to sex. He says she was the first one to turn it off and it was for "years." But there's never an explanation. Then, when they are in the nice hotel for the night, there is the moment where he "stops" and she begins to cry. At first, I thought this was a good moment, because she mentioned in the therapy session that he always kept his eyes tightly closed during sex, never looking at her. And here he was, looking at her! So it took me a bit to realize that something went wrong there. Less subtlety would be better, in that case.
But it's a lovely movie.

This could have been a great movie if only they had lightened up a little. Two good actors keep you in it but the film lapses into morbid contemplations of sex, aging and love. Steve Carell tried to play it straight is quite boring. Streep andJones are great and have moments of wonder but the second act buries them under its weight.

I enjoyed the movie, but do not consider it a comedy. Much more serious than I expected. Great subject matter and presented so well. Refreshing to see a marriage actually succeed! There is that reality believe it or not! Hard to see Steve Carrell in a serious role, but he did great! Tommy Lee Jones is a great Middle Aged slacker. Gives wonderful insight into some men at that stage in life. I would think many men would be able to relate to his character having an "aha" moment when "Arnold" finally opens up. We went to see this movie thinking it would be light hearted and an evening of laughter. Not the case. There were funny/cute moments, but the majority of the movie, IMO, is more serious and maybe a little slow at times.

My husband and I loved this movie. We are in our 50s and it was so nice to go to a movie that we could really relate to and enjoy. There was no violence, or gruesome subject matter. The acting was brilliant and the passion they brought to their characters was amazing. This is a movie that will make you laugh, but could also make you feel real emotion. We both highly recommend it!

We saw this movie as a midnight movie. We enjoyed the story, the acting and the feeling we came away with after the movie ended. Relationships take effort from both people ALL the time, and when that effort becomes rutted and rote the relationship suffers, sometimes so slowly it is unnoticeable. This is a great story about a woman who was not going to let that go on...she wanted to get her marriage back. Watching the process, which is sometimes painful and awkward, is actually very fulfilling in the end. People in relationships should definitely go see this movie.

This was the best movie I have seen in years! It was extremely funny and so realistic of men. Truly a funny comedy without the need for street gutter language. The acting was superb!! I am not sure who else could have pulled off the facial expressions. I figure these must be extremely difficult but made the picture what it is.
I would go to see it again in a heartbeat!!!

I think this is a movie every man must see! So very true to life. I wish I had seen this 2 years earlier! It shows the determination and frustration of a woman trying to and succeding at keeping both the relationship and the love alive!

This movie delivered what I expected it to deliver, but not what I had hoped it might deliver.
The storyline is stale and predictable, as is the outcome.
Meryl Streep's brilliant talent is constricted by the wimpiness of the script
and that of her character.
Tommy Lee Jones plays his trademark curmudgeon-with-a-heart-of-gold character.
Nothing unexpected happens in this movie. Nothing much happens at all.
That is, except for a lot of product placement. Did Coldwater Creek clothing company underwrite it ?
This movie did not engage me on any level.
Afterward, I felt as if I had been administered a mild sedative.
Don't waste your money on this movie just because Meryl is in it.
It's as weak as day-old iced tea.
Cons slow, weak & wimpy, beyond trite, a waste of talent, b-o-r-i-n-g
